Chapter Nine: Bread Crumbs
The trail led to the middle of the woods just outside the city. No sign of the Reaper anywhere. Nor Jesse. Just an empty forest. No sounds. No birds, no squirrels, no bugs, nothing. It's all devoid of life.
A twig snaps and I snap towards its direction. It's David, walking towards me.
"Oh, Keith," he said. "You found me. I was wondering how long it would take. I was beginning to worry you might never find me."
"Where's Jesse?" I ask.
"Oh, she's fine," he said. "Just so long as you beta me."
"Explain," I told him.
"Defeat me and your little girlfriend will be set free. If not, you'll both be locked up and tortured. Capisce?"
"Capisce."
I raised my fists and he raised his. I charged at him and went in for a left hook, which he dodged by ducking and punching me in the gut. He jumped up, doing a backflip all the while kicking me in the chin. I fell to the ground. I tried to get up, but he kicked me in the gut. I grunted and tried to get up once again, but he kicked me again, this time making me flop on my back. He walked over to a tree and snapped a limb off, then stabbed me in the leg with it.
"I win," he said. Then, he stomped on my face, knocking me into unconsciousness.
