Chapter Four: His Arrival
I woke up staring at an early-morning sky on wet ground. I was still in the park. I grunted and tried to roll over. Ever muscle in my body was sore. It hurt to move, but I managed to crawl towards my wheelchair. I climbed into it and looked around for David. I called out his name, but there was no response. Hardly anybody was walking through the park. It's too early for that. I roll down the sidewalk and try to wave down a cab. I eventually get one and he takes me home.
Once I reach my door, I roll into the house and over to my bed. When I try to push myself out of the wheelchair, I shoot towards the wall. I'm stuck inside the wall. I've no idea how that's possible. Wait... did it work? Am I walking again?
I push myself out of the wall and fall onto the floor. I try to stand up, and my legs start to move. I eventually stand up, wobbling and nearly falling over.
Did... did I do that?
I push myself up, and my knees hurt from the fall.
My knees.
Hurt.
From the fall.
I can feel my knees.
I can feel my knees.
I make an attempt to stand up, but stumble down. I try again, and again, and again, but I eventually stand up and gain balance. Now, the steps. I put one foot in front of the other. Oh, my God, I'm back to being a one-year-old.
Left foot, success. Right foot, success. Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot. I walk around my house for nearly an hour. I go into a jog, and then running. I grab my phone, call a cab, and tell him to take me to the track field. I run laps around the track until late evening.
I take out my phone and try to call David.
After four-and-a-half rings, he answers.
"Hey! I can walk again! It worked!" I exclaimed. All I heard was ragged breathing on his end.
"You... ruined me."
"What?"
"I... am broken. And it's all because of you," he told me.
"What are you talking about?" I ask worriedly.
"Everyone I touch, they die. They fry from the inside out. And it's your fault. And I'm coming for you."
The dial tone rings throughout my ear, and my hands shake nervously. The lampposts around start to flicker and go out. I look around, and a streak of white lightning goes around removing all civilians from the area. Eventually, it stops nearly fifty yards away from me. It's dark out, and all I can see a silhouette staring at me from afar.
"David?" I call out.
"Keith." he responds.
"Oh, God, what have I done?" I muttered to myself. "Let me see your face!"
He stomps towards me, slowly revealing his appearance. His skin looks like tar, and his mouth is open, wider than any normal mouth can stretch. His eyes are white, glowing and generating the only light around. He's horrifying.
"This is who I am now, Keith," he said. "Because of you."
"No, no, no, we need to get you help. Don't take this out on me. I had no idea what it would do to you. I am so sor--"
"I DON'T NEED YOUR APOLOGIES!" he screamed. "I DON'T NEED YOUR PITY! What I do need I some blood on my hands. Your blood."
I take off in a fast sprint, but time seems to freeze when I do. No cars driving by, no honking horns, no sound. I turn around and David is sprinting at me again. I run off, not looking back. I get out onto the sidewalk and keep on going, seemingly not losing stamina. No care we're moving so I took off into the streets, winding in between cars left and right. When I looked around, windows were shattering on buildings and David was in close-quarters range. He charges at me, but I sidestep and he falls on top of a car and tumbles off of it. I jump onto his back and leap off, running again in the same direction. I run all the way home, and lock the door behind me. Panting, I look out the window and David is staring at me from across the street. He zips in front of the window.
"I'll let you recover, get a hold on your powers for a little while. I want this to be a fair fight. I'll see you later, Keith Williams."
He tales off down the street and disappears.
