Sasha was a bold and carefree orphan who eked a living by robbery.She grew up as a tomboy so she had no girly feelings and didn't know how to behave like one but she was compassionate to others.From her loot,she would keep only what was necessary for herself and donate the rest to needy children.

Once,to escape from the police,she hid herself inside a bus which was carrying pilgrims to Mantralaya,the holy abode of Guru Raghavendra swamy and home of the once hot-tempered Raghava who renounced worldly pleasures living as a saint serving the Swamy and devotees.

The bus arrived at the temple and Sasha alighted.

S: Yaawnn...some pilgrim spot.They will surely bring lots of money to deposit into the collection box.That should suffice for me.

She felt hungry and stood in the que that was serving prasadam.Getting her share,she settled at a cosy spot to have her meal.

S: Thoo...thoo...it's so plain no salt no egg no chicken no nothing how do they eat this?

She looked around and called a boy who went to her.

S: Isn't there any non-veg restaurant here?

The boy looked shocked and shook his head no.

"Akka,here even thinking of those things is a sin."

He went off.

S: Bahh such a boring place.I won't survive here for long.Better to loot and leave soon.

She waited until night.The temple was open and she sneaked in.Spotting the huge collection box,she grinned.With her tools she managed to tamper the lock and took out cash and jewels stuffing it into her bagpack.

S: Hihihihi never knew it was this easy to loot a temple.

With her catch,she tried to make an exit when suddenly all the lights went off and it was pitch dark.Sasha panicked.

She heard the flick of a matchstick and turned.An oil lamp was being lit and she looked up to see the person's face.

In the light of the lamp their eyes met.

R: Who are you ?

She quickly hid her bag behind her.

S: Huh...uh...I came to pray...

However Raghava already spotted the bag and noticing her nervousness he was convinced she was a thief.Sasha took to her heels but he got the better of her.Not wanting to touch a woman,he rolled his long saffron shawl and threw it around her neck to immobilize her.She struggled to free herself.

S: Leave me...let me go pls...

He caught both her hands and tied her to a pole using the same shawl.Sasha stomped her feet and bit the knot in an attempt to release herself.

S: Pls sir...pls sir...let me go no I am an innocent soul...🥺

She earned a glare from him.Snatching her bag,he opened it and found the cash and jewels looted from the temple.

S: Oops...hihihi...We can share this 50-50 pls remove this knot...

R: Don't you feel ashamed to steal god's property?

S: Huh...sob...sob...sniff...I am not doing this willfully.My ailing mother needs money for her treatment.I prayed to god but he didn't help so I only helped myself...to...his...property...

She pulled a fast one.Raghava went in and deposited the valuables back into the collection box.He untied her from the pole and tied her hands behind her back.

S: Are you going to hand me over to the police?Pls don't...

Though handing over a thief to police was the apt thing to do he felt it was unsafe to send a young girl to the station at that hour and decided to forgive her.

R: I'll drop you home.Where is your place?

S: Huh...mmm...it's quite far from here.I have to wait for the bus which will only come in the morning.

R: What will you do until then ?

S: Just...sleep here...under the tree...

R: Come with me...

He took her to his house near the temple.Sasha stepped in.It was kept very neat and clean.There was a single bed,a prayer alter,kitchen and a small hall.Sasha sulked seeing all single bachelor god photos hung on the walls.

S mv: His body is of an action hero and face tells he can make triplets in one attempt yet he's living like an ascetic.Waste fellow...😏

R: Look,I'm not buying your story.Only when I drop you home and see the condition of your mother will I believe you.You may stay here for the night.

S: Err...I need to use the washroom.Where is it?

He took her to the common toilet of his housing colony.He turned facing away while waiting for her outside.She popped her head out,

S: Mmmm...the flush isn't working...

R: It is like that only here.You have to use the bucket and mug.

S: 🙄😤

She came out and he led the way back to his home.Sending her in,he locked the door and slept on the raised platform adjoined to his house.Sasha who used to sleep in fear of getting caught by police or intruded by men slept peacefully for the first time.

The next morning,

R: Oye...wake up...

He called her.Rubbing her eyes to adjust her vision she saw the tall saintly figure standing before her in saffron garbs.

R: Get ready.We have to go to your home.

When Sasha came out of the common bathroom,she saw people of the colony looking at her weirdly.

S: What?Do I look like an alien that you are all gaping it me?Move!

They stepped aside giving her way.

"Who is this girl?Never seen her here before...?"

"She's going into Raghava's house.Must be his girl."

They gossiped but she ignored them and quietly went in.He was preparing tea.

R: Have this...

She reached out for the tumbler from his hand but he kept it on the table to avoid touching her.

S: Your crown will fall or what if you give in my hand??🤨

She mumbled to herself as she sipped the tea.

R: Come,let's go...

S: Wait what is the rush?Let me finish this.You got some biscuits?

She asked as if she knew him for long.He passed her some.Sitting on the chair like a man she dipped those biscuits in tea and had them calmly as if she had come visiting to her relatives house.

They were at the bus stop waiting for the bus.

S mv: How to tell him I neither have a home nor a mother!This walking pillar will hand me over to the police...

R: Bus is here.Come...

S: Err...not this one the next one...

Whichever bus came she said the same.He then flagged a taxi.

R: Get in.This will definitely take us to your home.

She knew she couldn't lie any further.

S: This also won't take me there.I have no home or mother.I lied to you.

R: Hmm...lying,robbing and what nots?God has given you hands and legs instead of working hard you want want to live an easy life by these low acts?

S: Not for an easy life.I am doing this for my survival.

R: Yeah right every thief who is caught will have his/her justification doesn't mean theft is right.You have to be handed over to the police!

S: Fine.If that is what you wish I'm ready.They will keep me in lock up for a day or two and let me off.I will still continue robbing.

R: You have no remorse don't you?You are boldly saying you will continue your bad ways...

S: Then what else you expect me to do?When I was twelve years my parents died in a freak accident.I was raised by my paternal uncle and aunt who waited until I turned eighteen then tried to marry me off to a wealthy but lusty old landlord.I escaped from there.Doing odd jobs,barely having anything to eat,I somehow completed my studies.When I went for interviews,they would demand lakhs or ask me to sleep with them.I felt disgusted and began doing housework to feed myself.Men would look at me with lust.I had to quit that also to save my honour.I have to survive in this mean world and the only safe way I could think of was this.

She looked at him who was listening patiently.

S: Theft is wrong if it is for a materialistic life not for one's survival.You probably wouldn't know all this since you have shut yourself from the outside world.All I ask of you is to let me go and I won't come your way ever again.If you heart still doesn't melt after hearing this then...

He interrupted her.

R: If I get you a decent job,will you give up this way of life?

S: Definitely.

R: Then come with me.

He took her to a school situated near the temple.They were looking for a teacher to take classes for the lower standard and since Raghava knew the principal,through his recommendation Sasha got the job.She was on cloud nine.

He walked ahead while she stood at the same spot.Looking behind he called her,

R: Who are you waiting for?

S: Err...won't they give me a house?

R: Why not?They will provide a bungalow,car,servants and more.Madam,you've got a teacher job,not minister post!

S: Huh...uh...where do I stay then?

R: I'll make arrangements for that also.

S: Yaaayyyy!!!😃

Like a happy kid,she skipped to him and coiled her arms around his.He felt uncomfortable.

S: I'm so sorry...

She bit her tongue.

Raghava allowed her to stay at his place as during the day he would be at the temple and only return home late in the evening.

It was her first day of work so Sasha got up early.Raghava offered to drop her at school and they left on his bike.When they reached,

R: Forget about your past and take this as a new life.All the best to you.

He smiled.She thanked him in return.

R: I'm sorry but I haven't got your name?

S: Sasha...

R: Sirisha...

S: Not Siri...it's Sa...Sasha...ok bye...see you later...

He watched her until she went in.Raghava became solemn as he got reminded of his deceased lover Sirisha.When Sasha smilingly waved at him he saw Sirisha in her.

Sasha took English and Maths lessons for the students.They gelled well with their new teacher and she too was contented around them.When she was returning home,the principal called her.

"Sasha,since it's your first day it's ok but from tomorrow pls wear a saree as that is dress code for teachers."said the principal.

Sasha kept a face as if a bomb dropped on her head.From the time she could remember it was only shirt and jeans for her.Neither did she know to tie a saree nor how to carry herself in one.Back home she sat solemnly thinking what to do.Raghava returned from the temple.

R: You still haven't slept ?

S: No...

R: Any problem?

S: Yeah...quite a big problem...

R: And what is it ?

S: You won't be able to help in this issue...leave it...

R: I can try...

S: Principal wants me to come in saree.

R: That's all?We can go and buy them now.If you're worried about cash I'll pay for you first you can return me once you get your salary.

S: No...not that...I...I've never worn a saree in my life.Not even draped a shawl.

He was baffled.

S: Don't look at me like that.I feel comfortable in this jeans and shirt.Can you pls talk to the principal and let me be in this ?

R: I'm afraid that I can't because it is school rules.

S: Haiyooo gone!Just as I thought everything was falling in place for me this problem has risen.If I don't go in saree I will lose my job then I have to resort to robbery.

She perched herself on the varenda keeping one leg stretched and her other knee bent like a man.

R: You don't have a choice.Come let's go and get you sarees.

S: I'm not coming!I don't like to wear all that!I don't care I am only going to be like this!

She refused to go with him and went to sleep.Next morning she got dressed in her jeans and shirt as usual.Her eyes caught a packet on her bed and she removed the cover.It was a saree in a pretty red shade.

Taking that she went upstairs to the terrace and saw Raghava watering the plants.

S: What is this?😡

R: It's called a saree.

S: That I know!I told you no I won't wear all this then why did you go and buy?Did I ask?

R: If you don't wear this they will not allow you to work and then you will resort to your old ways.I can't allow that to happen.

She rolled her eyes.

S: I don't even know what to do with this much cloth how am I going to wear it?Will you tie this for me??

C: Babu...babu...

An old lady came up calling him.Raghava welcomed her and introduced Sasha to her.

R: Sirisha...this is...

S: Sasha!!😡

R: Sorry...Sasha...this is our neighbour Chandramma.I only called her.She will help you with this.

S: Do I really have to wear this?

He nodded.Sulking she followed Chandramma downstairs.

C: What is this you're standing clotheless infront of me?

S: You have to tie this thing for me right?

C: For that you will stand nude that too without any shyness?Wear your undergarments first then put on this blouse and petticoat.

S: Erm...Chandramma,can I like skip the top inner wear because already there is a blouse.I will feel suffocated wearing this tight blouse over that.

C: Chi chi what a girl are you who doesn't want to wear inners?Better wear them!

Raghava could hear their conversations and shook his head smiling to himself at her antics.Chandramma called him and he came down.He saw Sasha in saree.Chandramma had also dolled her up with bindi and accessories.

R: Good.Now you look like a lady.

She blew the bubble gum which popped on her lips.

C: Spit that thing out and stand coyly like a girl!

Chandramma smacked her bum to straighten her posture.

S: Ow!I'm getting late.Will you drop me or I have to go myself?

R: I have some work,you only go.

S: Ok bye.Bye Chandramma.

She took a step forward.Since she was not used to walk in sarees she tripped on the pleats but was caught by Raghava.

S: Hihihi...sorry...

C: Babu,if she is going to walk at this rate she will only reach after school ends.You only drop her.

Raghava nodded in approval.Catching her saree on both sides she raised it until her knees to help her walk with ease much to their aghast.

R: What are you doing?Put it down!

S: I can't walk with this material flowing down in between my legs!

Raghava averted his gaze.Chandramma pulled down the saree and adjusted it properly for her.

C: Don't you feel shy to show your legs to a man?

She whispered in her ears.

S: What is there to feel shy?He also has legs na?

C: Oh god give this girl some sense!!Look,you shouldn't raise this ok!Take slow steps for now.

Shaking her head she followed the instructions.He waited for her outside.Holding his shoulder for support,she sat on the pillion.

R: Are you comfortable?

S: If I say no will you let me change to my jeans?

Smiling,he kickstarted his bike.She waved a bye to Chandramma.

C: How good they look together!Raghavendra Swamy,pls get them married!

Chandramma prayed in her heart and at that time the temple bell rang as if granting the wish.

Some days later,

As usual Sasha was getting ready for work.Whenever she tried to take the pleats,the material kept slipping from her grip.She got frustrated and threw it away.Sitting on the bed,she tapped her feet and mumbled in irritation.Unknowingly Raghava entered.Seeing her in the blouse and petticoat,he looked away.

R: Sorry.I didn't know you were changing.I'll be outside.

S: It's ok.Hey wait!Can you pls help tie this for me?

R: Err...I'll call Chandramma.

S: You forgot she has gone to her native?That's why I'm struggling with this.

R: I don't know...

S: Don't lie!You told me it's you who ties saree for the goddess idols.Pls,it's getting late.Help me no...

Raghava hesitated.

R mv: She's an unmarried young girl I shouldn't be doing this.

S: Think you are draping this on a goddess of you are feeling uneasy.

He took the material from her.She stood in her blouse and petticoat.Without looking at her in his mind he visioned the goddess and with no ill thoughts he helped her.

R: Tuck this end on your waist.

She did as he told.He began taking the pleats.

S: Wow!You're doing it like a pro!

He passed her the set of pleats which she tucked below her navel.He then brought the rest of the material around her back to the front then took the pleats for the pallu and pinned it to her shoulder. Sasha looked herself in the mirror.

S: Excellent!I don't think even ladies will tie it so perfect.

R: Thank you.

S: From tomorrow onwards no need for Chandramma you only tie for me!😃

R: 😕

Months passed and Sasha was happy with her new home and the people around her.She grew very fond of Raghava in particular and stuck to him always even to the extent of sleeping on his lap.He understood that she was naive and took her behaviour lightly.

R: Sasha...you're still sleeping?You'll be late.Get up!

He called out to her as he placed the garlands on the photos of deities.Sasha was still in bed.Not getting any response from her,he went near and lowered the blanket.He noticed her teeth chattering and she was shivering.He touched her forehead.She was running a high fever.

He pulled back the blanket to cover her and called for the doctor.

"She has got chicken pox.I'll give her an injection for the fever to subside.She needs to rest."

The doctor diagnosed after examining her.Once she left,Raghava went out to get neem leaves.Carrying her,he made her lie down on a mattress of neem leaves.

(Trivia - Chicken pox is considered a divine play by the goddess.People believed whoever got it meant the goddess had come down to reside in their bodies hence during that time the house was kept very clean.Abstinence from alcohol,non-veg and copulation was adhered to strictly.Neem leaves,which is a favourite of the goddess,were used around the affected person to keep them cool.)

The following day,pox developed all over her face and arms.Raghava sat beside her and fanned her from head to toe with a bunch of those neem leaves.

Looking at him she spoke in a feeble tone,

S: Don't you feel disgusted?

R: For what?

S: Seeing me like this...with pox all over me...it's not a pretty sight...

He shook his head in denial.

S: This is contagious.Why don't you stay away from me for some days?

R: If a child is unwell will a mother abandon it and go?Whatever the state of the child,a mother will by his side.If it comes for me I will take it but I'm not leaving you like this.

She was touched and looked at him with adoration.

S: I was of the opinion all men are the same,only after a woman's body.How wrong of me to think like that.Men like you also exist.

R: Thanks for the compliment.You have not eaten anything.Drink this...

S: I don't want...I can't get up my body is aching...

He touched her and supporting her to sit upright,he made her sip coconut juice.Without sleeping at night,he sat by her side to watch on her incase she needed anything.He took care of her in all ways he could.Slowly she recovered and after a fortnight she was back to health.

Both were on the terrace.He was combing her hair while she held a mirror in her hand and through that she was watching him.

S: Raghava...

R: Mmm...

S: Why aren't you married?

R: I'm not interested in marriage.

S: Why?You don't like girls?

R: Not like that.I'm happy doing service to swamy and his devotees.

S: Hmm...in your opinion how should a wife be?

R: Why are you asking my opinion for that?

S: Just to know...tell...

He thought for a moment.

R: In nature,should be very calm,soft spoken and loving.Lookswise,she should have long black hair adorned with jasmine flowers.Wearing glass bangles,a round bindi and clad in sarees she should be the epitome of grace.When I return home after work,she should welcome me with a smile,her head bent and shyly address me 'evandi...'...

He described further and Sasha found it boring but nonetheless she gave him her attention.

R: Finished plaiting see if it is ok...

He placed her braid over her shoulder.

S: Finished so soon?Super!Thank you.Poor me if you get married there won't be anyone to do like this for me.

R: You get married to a guy who will do this for you.

S: Bah...I'm not going to get married or go anywhere I want to be like this,here and with you.

She curled herself in a fetal position and rested her head on his lap.He patted her head.

Unknown to them Raghava's parents who had come to visit him overheard their conversations.They were shocked to see a young girl so close with their son.His father cleared his throat to get Raghava's attention.

R: Amma...nanna...

Sasha got up.He ran to welcome his parents.Seeing the looks on their faces he knew they were going to ask about Sasha.

R: Erm...she's Sasha...

Sasha went to them and folded her palms in respect.Raghava introduced her to them and later when she was away,he explained to his parents how they met and the events that transpired thereafter.His parents stayed there with him for the night.When Sasha was asleep they had an open talk with their son.

R's dad: You're sheltering her it's fine but what will the society think about your relationship have you thought?

R's mom: You are a guy but what about her?She will be subjected to ill talks.Either marry her or send her away.

R: There is no chance of marriage for me.Sending her away is also not possible at this moment.She is an orphan and doesn't have anyone of her own.She's attached to me too.She will be lost if I ask her to leave.I can't do that.Pls give me sometime I will think a way out of this but until then pls don't say anything hurtful to her.

His mother began weeping.He rushed to her side and kneeled before her.

R: Amma,why are you crying now?

She caressed his head.

R's mom: It was because of us you wore this garbs it pains me as a mother to see you like this.Sirisha is not going to come back.You shunned your cousin who was waiting for you and in that anger she married another.Now she is happy with her husband and child but my son who wished well for all doesn't have a family of his own.

R: Amma,don't cry...if this is swamy's wish what can I do?Pls be calm...

R's dad: No swamy ever told not to marry or have a family life!!If it was so,why he created a world with men and women?If we die you are there to light our pyre but if you die who is there to do it?

He took a calm breath.

R: I've listened to your words so far but pls leave me alone in this matter.I beg you.No one can fill my Sirisha's spot.If you still insist then I will go somewhere far never to return.

He got up and went leaving his parents at a loss.Next morning they were getting ready to leave.

S: Bye bye uncle!Bye bye aunty!

His mother called her aside and asking her to turn she fixed jasmine flowers on Sasha's braid,an indication of accepting her as their daughter-in-law.Holding her chin,his mother asked her,

R's mom: You like my son don't you?

S: Oh yes!I like him so much aunty.He stopped me from robbing.He got me a job at a school.He looks after me well...

R's mom: Leave all that aside,will you marry...

Before she could ask Sasha if she would marry her son he interrupted.

R: Amma!

He whisked his mother away from her.

R: I was doubtful when you pulled her aside so I came.Haven't I made myself clear last night?It is now that she's started to trust men,why do you want to spoil that?

His mother began crying.

R: Uff...again...pls get in Amma...

He made her sit inside the taxi.

R: Nanna,pls take care of Amma and you too pls don't worry about me.

He instructed the driver to go.Sasha waved at them.

S: Uncle!Aunty!Come next week...It is school vacations I will have leave we can spend more time...

Raghava went inside with her in tow.

S: Why you chased your parents away?I could see from their faces they wanted to stay with you for sometime.

R: They keep coming every now and then so it's fine...

S: Hmm you have parents so you don't value them.Ask an orphan like me I know how it feels to be without them.

R: If you like them so much you can go and be with them.I can arrange for that.

S: I don't mind but at the same time I will miss you.If you come with me then I am ready to go...

R: You're asking for the impossible.

S: Ok I'll ask for the possible then...

She jumped on his back and encircled her arms around his shoulders.

S: Piggyback me!

She rode on his back yapping away nonstop while he did his chores.

One day while returning after work,she saw Raghava talking at lengths with a young and pretty foreigner.Seeing that she got jealous.Menacing towards them,she pulled him away.

R: Hey wait Sasha...I'm explaining to her about the deities...

S: There are so many people there she can only see you or what?

R: She speaks English and only I can converse so they brought her to me.

S: Oh!Mr.Englishman,if she has to know about this place only through you let her not know.You come...let's go home.

She looked her hands around his arm.

R: Leave my hand.Why are you behaving like this?

S: I don't like you talking to girls.You should only talk to me!Understood?

She was furious.The first time she ever showed her anger to him.Not minding her Raghava walked away.Later at his home,he was meditating.

Feeling bad about her behaviour she stood leaning against the pillar waiting for him to finish.When he opened his eyes he saw her.

S: I'm so sorry for behaving like a stupid.😔

He didn't talk a word.He went to the kitchen and filled her plate with food.He kept it on the table for her to eat.

S: I won't eat until you speak to me!

He took the plate back into the kitchen.

S: (mv:Oh no my food is going...)Huh...uh...I'm hungry...

He came out and placed the plate back on the table.

S: I said I won't eat until you...

He went to take the plate.

S: Are you playing games with me?Taking the plate in and out?I said sorry no...why don't you speak to me?I feel bad when you don't...

He still didn't budge and walking past her he went to put grains for the birds on the terrace.

S: Stone-hearted guy!I don't want food!

She plopped on the cot weeping and cursing him.When he came down he saw the plate of food untouched.

Unconsciously tears rolled down her cheeks and she rubbed them away.She hated to cry and hated people who cried.The last time she remembered shedding tears was when the bodies of her parents were brought infront of her before they were taken away for cremation.After that it was now.She felt a hand on her back.Wiping her face she got up and sat upright drawing her knees to her chest.

R: Eat...

He forwarded her plate.She shook her head in denial.

R: You are a young girl you shouldn't stay on an empty stomach.Come on be a good girl.

S: I will only eat if you talk to me...

R: Was I singing now?

Her lips curved into a smile.

S: You're not angry with me?

R: No I'm not.

He made the food into a ball and fed her.She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

R: Is the food too spicy?

S: No.It's very nice but I don't like this leafy greens.

R: Now you have this tomorrow I will make what you like.

She shook her head.Later,he made her bed.

R: Goodnight.

S: There is so much space.You can also sleep here.Why are you sleeping outside every night?

R: No.That's not right.People are watching us if we stay under one roof at night they might think otherwise let's not give them a chance to talk.

S: Fine.Goodnight.

School vacations had begun and Sasha was at home.Chandramma was her companion when Raghava was not around.One evening,Sasha followed her to watch a Ramayanam stage play.It was Sasha's first time getting exposed to the epic hence she was engrossed in it.

Seetha upon seeing Rama felt shy.Sasha tapped Chandramma.

S: Why is she looking down instead of approaching him?

C: She is a girl so she is blushing when she met her husband for the first time.

S: Oh...I...see...

"Raghukula Raghava Ramachandra prabho..."🎵

S: Raghava...

The name stuck on her mind.She replaced the characters of Rama and Seetha with Raghava and herself respectively.

"Ramachandraya janaka rajaja manoharaaya
mamakabheeshtadaya mahita mangalam..."🎶

The show ended and both ladies were on their way home.Sasha was lost in thoughts.

C: Nice play.You liked it?

She nodded.

C: What are you thinking Sasha?

S: Seetha loves Rama a lot no and he too.Even though he sent her away he was always thinking about her.They can't do without each other no?

C: That's right.That's how every loving couple will be.See my husband,he scolds me almost on a daily basis but one day I go to my mother's house,he becomes restless.He would call me asking when I would return.Even I would be waiting to come back to him.

They chuckled.

S: After seeing their bond even I too wish to get married.

C: That's good.My advice to you - marry someone who will look after you like a child.

S: Hmm...

They reached their place.Raghava was waiting for Sasha outside.

R: Where you went?

She could see the worry on his face.

C: We went to watch Ramayanam play.

R: That's fine but you could have told me a word no?

He sounded miffed.Chandramma spoke on her behalf.

C: It's not her fault babu she wanted to wait for you but I only told we would be late for the show.Ok I'll take leave now.

She left.Raghava and Sasha went inside.

S: You seem to be upset...

R: No...nothing of that sort...have you taken your dinner?

He asked without looking at her face.

S: No but I'm not feeling hungry.

R: I have told you umpteen times not to go to bed on an empty stomach.Have some milk atleast.

He heated the milk for her.

R: Can I tell you something if you don't mind?

S: Go ahead...

R: I always see you at home when I return but today as I stepped into the house you weren't there and I became worried.When I shut my eyes to meditate also I couldn't concentrate.I was concerned about you.Next time if you are going anywhere pls tell me beforehand.

She connected that with the scene of Rama feeling hopeless in Seetha's absence.

S: Ok chill.Have you taken your dinner?

R: Not yet.Actually I was waiting for you.

S: I'm sorry.You have your food then.

R: It's ok I'll also have milk tonight.

While he slept peacefully she couldn't get herself to sleep.Her mind reeled back to the day she met Raghava the first time and the subsequent events until the most recent that happened earlier,him missing her absence.Then it dawned upon her that she was madly in love with him.

S: He looks after me like a child like Chandramma said.He is the one for me.

She grinned to herself.Pulling the blanket over her head she fell back on her bed.

At this point you can imagine a dream song of them wearing wacky costumes and chasing each other around trees with 50 male and female backdrop dancers.You may also choose to skip the song and fill your buckets with popcorn and mugs with coke!😁

Early in the morning Sasha woke up and had her bath.She wore a langa voni and adorned her hair with jasmine flowers.She also filled the center of her forehead with sindoor and wore glass bangles just the way he liked.

Satisfied with her looks,she decided to complete the chores before he woke up.She swept the front of the house and washed the area.She then drew a very messy kolam.She put fresh garlands for the deities and lighted the lamp.She also watered the plants and fed grains to the birds.

S: Phew!This is much more tiring than I thought!

Knowing he would wake up soon,she heated the water for his bath and kept it ready.

S: Huh...am I missing anything?His towel!!

She took his towel from the wardrobe and kept it at his reach.

Raghava woke up.He was astounded to see his house kept so neat.The prayer alter was prepped for his morning prayers.After shower he came in wiping his hair.Sasha stood before him with coffee tumbler in her hand.

S: Hihihi...

She grinned like a crazy person.

R: Aaah!!

He freaked out seeing the huge round sindoor on her forehead resembling the angry mother goddess.

R: What's wrong with you today?You were alright until last night...

S: I will tell.You first have this coffee.I only made.

He took a sip and felt like puking.

S: How is it?

R: Mmm...it's fine just that coffee is less in this tumbler of salt.

S: What?

She tasted and gave the same expression as him.

S: Oh I'm so sorry I didn't know which was sugar and salt both are same colour so.Wait I'll make a proper coffee and get...

He held her hand.

R: No it's ok.I'll feed the birds and...

S: I've done all that.I've watered the plants too.You pray and come I'll make your breakfast by then.

R:(mv:For coffee she added salt for upma she might add chilli powder no I can't take the risk)Huh...uh...today is ammavasya I only have to cook so you be here...

She followed him into the kitchen.

S: I will help you.

She took the knife to chop veggies but cut her finger and it bled.Without forethought he took her finger into his mouth and sucked it gently.Her eyes involuntarily closed as she felt a sensation in her body that she never felt before.

R: This is why I told you to stay away...rinse your hand...

He placed it under running water.She felt on top of the world seeing his concern for her.

R: You just sit one side and let me do this.Once cooking is over I will call you.

S: Raghava,I want to tell you something important...

R: Tell...

S: Hmm you finish you prayers and come then I will tell...pray for me also...whatever I wish should come true...

He smiled in approval.

Later he was getting ready to leave to the temple.She passed him his saffron shawl.

R: Thank you.You wanted to say something what is it?

S: That...I lo...

She was about to propose him when she remembered she had to feel shy first so she quickly dropped her head and stared at the floor.Raghava followed her line of vision and looked down.

R: What are you searching for?You lost your ear stud again?Wait...I'll help you look for it...

S: Huh...no no...I didn't lose anything...I was feeling shy...

R: Shy?

She looked deeply into his eyes.

S: I love you Raghava.I want to marry you.I want to cook for you,wash your clothes,eat your leftover and much more.I want to have a dozen babies with you.I want to be by your side for the rest of my life.

She said in one single breath and awaited his response.He stood dumbfounded for a moment.

R: Take your skipping rope and go and play outside.I'll come soon and prepare lunch.

S: Play ah?Hello!I'm serious!Raghava I'm in love with you!

R: Sasha,I think someone has corrupted your mind.I have no such ideas and treat you only as a good friend.Don't speak like this to me again.

He turned to leave but she blocked his path.

S: Why not?Why don't you like me?Is it because I was a thief once upon a time?You only told no Valmiki who was once a robber became a sage later.I'm good now isn't that enough?

R: It is not about that.I cannot love any woman or get into a relationship.

S: Why?Are you impotent?

R: Sasha,watch your words!This type of talks is not right for a woman.

He washed his feet.

C: I need to talk with you.

R: I know what it is about.Its not going to happen.Forget it.

They followed him inside.

C: No I'm asking do you think yourself as anjaneya swamy?Guys of your age are roaming with 3-4 children but look at you!That beard,moustache and saffron garbs...

R: I like this way of life please leave me alone.

C: Ok I will leave you what about this girl?Knowingly or unknowingly you have sheltered an unmarried young girl.Who will marry her after this?Doesn't this girl have a life?Or you plan to make her wear saffron like you?

Raghava glared at Sasha.

R: This is your work no?Calling people for your support?

He smiled at them and went upstairs.The ladies exchanged a high-five.

A week later,Chandramma and Sasha were drying clothes on the terrace.A car stopped infront of the house.Sasha peeked down and saw a family getting down from the car.

C: Who could it be?

S: Must be his relatives...he must have brought them to fix our marriage date!Yes!

Raghava welcomed them in and offered refreshments.He went upstairs to call Sasha.

R: Chandramma,pls help her with the saree and put on some jewels for her.The groom's family have come to see Sasha.

The ladies exchanged shocked looks.Sasha's eyes welled up.

C: What are you saying babu ?

R: All this while I saw her as a kid but after you spoke to me that day I realised she is also a woman with wishes and desires.If her parents were around they would have done this for her since she has no one we only have to conduct her marriage.

He walked up to her and she looked away.

R: Sasha,you are not at all at fault for having such fixations.You have lacked care and attention from a man so when I treated you that way you got infatuated with me that's all.The groom is well educated and of good character I have already enquired.You will be happy with him and over time you will forget me.Come...

She grabbed his collar in fury.

S: Do you think I am after you for your looks or physical pleasure?I don't know to feel shy or behave in a womanly way but that doesn't mean I am unfit to love!Ok now you tell me...What should I do for you to understand that I love your heart and nothing else?If you don't want to touch me for life,it's fine.I'm also ready to live like you but I won't leave you and go!

She hit her head on his chest and cried.

R: Don't be silly Sasha.You are a woman.You have to get married and have children.They might mistake if we keep them waiting.Get ready and come fast.

He left leaving them bewildered.She sat like a lifeless statue when Chandramma dolled her up.

In saree,she stood before the groom and placed the coffee tray on the table like a docile girl.The groom liked Sasha and instantly gave his nod.

R: Sasha,do you like him?

He asked as if he didn't know anything and that irked her.Going into the kitchen,she pulled out a sickle and came out menacingly like goddess Kaali.

The groom's family panicked seeing her rage.

R: Shasha,what are you doing?

S: You shut up!

She silenced him.Then pointing the sickle at the groom's family,

S: You want to marry me?A murder is going to take place here now!If you value your life,run without turning back else your heads also will roll!😡

The family took their fruits platter and fled from there.

R: Sasha,are you mad? Why are you behaving like...

S: Aei!I have been patient enough!!I asked you in a nice manner but you thought I am cheap no?If I let you off now,tomorrow you will bring another goof to marry me so I've decided to murder you and wear a white saree for the rest of my life!

She charged at him.He raised his hand to slap her but stopped midway thinking of the word he had given to his parents.He held her hand and snatched the sickle throwing it away.

R: You think only you can get angry??I was more furious and aggressive than you could ever imagine!!This calm and benign person that you see now was once a violent fighter!!

He narrated his flashback and how life changed for him after his lover's death.

R: I cannot accept you because I still love her.I didn't want to upset you by telling all this.Hereafter atleast stop behaving childishly and grow up.

He was at the terrace sitting aloof.Sasha clanked her bangles to get his attention and he came out of his train of thoughts.

R: Come Sasha...

She went and sat beside him.

S: I'm sorry Raghava.I didn't know you had so much sorrow buried within you...

R: That's alright.Leave it.

S: I have decided something...

She handed him a letter.

R: What is this?

S: Read...

He unfolded the white paper and saw names of boys and girls written on separate columns

R: Names...I don't get it.

S: I was thinking and came up with these names for our sons and daughters.Pick your favorite.

He fixed her with a confused look.

S: What is that look for?These days no one cares even if a love breaks up let alone your 1940's tragedy story.She died it seems so he will live in her memory it seems.Her ill fate she couldn't live with this body builder with heart of a baby but I am not stupid to let go of such a personality.You are marrying me and we are making babies.That is final!

She snatched the paper from his hand.

S: I forgot I have two more names to add...

She brushed her shoulders against his in a provocative manner.

Biting her lower lip,she winked.

He chased after her and she ran downstairs to escape from him.

S: Aahh!Someone save me my husband is attacking me!!!

He stood with hands at his hips.

R: Chey!It's all my fault!I should have maintained a distance with her from day one.

From then onwards he began behaving indifferently towards her hoping that she would give up her feelings for him however it only made her love him the more.

Before she expressed her feelings to him they would eat together or he would feed her but ever since that day he stopped doing that.

S: Raghava,come let's eat.

She served his dinner but he went to the kitchen and helped himself annoying her.

S: You don't like me fine but why are you showing that anger on food?If you eat with me will the sky fall on your head?

R: Giving you that space only has made you think and act like this.It is better we remain this way hereafter.

S: Why are you hurting me by your words and actions?What wrong have I done apart from loving you with all my heart?😢

R: You have the answer in your question.Loving me is the mistake you did.

S: Is it so?If you didn't feel that way about me why did you behave closely with me all this while?

R: Because you were innocent like a child you had no bad thoughts but that isn't the case anymore.You desire me.It is wrong.

S: Wrong?Then why are you still keeping me with you why don't you send me away?

R: It is not my nature to send away a person who I've sheltered in my home.You may be here for as long as you want but this is how I will be.If you wish to leave,I won't stop you.

She was heartbroken.Tears streamed from her cheeks and she wiped it.

R: I never felt like an orphan even when my parents died but today I really feel like one.Thanks for letting me know who I am.Hereafter I won't be a burden to you.I will leave tomorrow morning...

R: Fine.

He settled on the porch to sleep.She shut the door and fell on her cot crying thinking about him.After a while she drifted off to sleep.

The loud creak of thunder caused a jerk and Sasha got up.It had begun to pour heavily.

She opened the main door to check on him.He was shivering due to cold and the rainwater was also getting in.Sasha tapped him.

S: It's raining.Come and sleep inside.

R: It's ok I am fine.

S: You are not.If you sleep in this cold you will fall ill.Rain doesn't look like it is going to stop anytime soon.Pls don't be stubborn.Come.

He got up and came in.She locked the door.

S: You sleep on your cot I will sleep on the floor.

Climbing on a stool,she reached out for the rolled mattress which was kept atop the shelf when a lizard fell on her.She let out a loud shriek and threw away her voni to shoo the pest away.Losing her balance she was about to fall but he was quick and caught her.She gripped the rudraksh beads around his neck for support accidentally causing it to snap and the beads rolled they both landed heavily on the floor.

A sudden bout of thunder frightened Sasha who hugged him.

His arms banded around her waist and she was pressed against him.Her bosoms pinned against his hard chest and that contact made her go weak.Tangled in the web of lust,he too did not want to disengage from her.Flipping her over and getting on top,his lips began grazing her neck.She closed her eyes and tilted her head to the side to give him access.

The oil lamp that was lit at the prayer alter doused on its own.

The early morning temple bell rang.Raghava stirred from his sleep.He found himself bare-bodied with the very girl whose romantic advances he rejected.

Raghava felt ashamed of himself.Not only did he succumb to passion but he also ruined a girl.Carefully disengaging himself from her as to not wake her up,he got up to shower.Feeling embarrassed to face her he quietly left to the temple while she was still asleep.

He couldn't get himself to perform any worship as the sin he committed the previous night reeled before his eyes making him writhe in guilt.Feeling miserable,he went to swamy's shrine.He dropped on his knees and cried his lungs out.He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up.It was his guru.

"Why are you crying Raghava?"

He folded his hands in respect and spoke unable to meet his guru in the eye.

R: I..I..I've erred...I lost control of my mind and body...I with a girl...I am a sinner!!

The guru listened patiently to his outpour of grief.

"Calm down Raghava.You have not done anything out of the norm.This only means one thing that you haven't accepted spiritualism wholeheartedly because if you did,you would have had the willpower to overcome those momentary feelings."

R: Swamy,I've realised my mistake I promise I will never allow anything like this to happen again I will stay here in this temple forever and do service to the lord to atone for my sin.

"And what about the girl who gave herself to you?She will be even more affected than you since she is a woman."

Raghava did not have an answer.His guru removed the saffron shawl which he had draped across his torso.

"I know you well and how you regard women.You are not so weak to lose yourself.Deep down you do love the girl but you are not ready to accept that as you feel you are obligated to live as an ascetic."

Raghava listened calmly.

"No god or guru has refrained man from family life.If he felt that way you or I wouldn't be here.He knows what is best for everyone.God has sent this girl to you for a reason.Probably this is also his game to make you aware of the purpose of your life.Go Raghava,marry her and give her the status of your wife.Discharge your duties as a son and a man in this society.You have my blessings."

All his uncertainties put to rest,Raghava touched his guru's feet.He ran back home only to find her missing.Chandramma passed him a letter which Sasha had kept for him.

It was then that he realised how much she meant to him.Like a madman he searched for her everywhere but she was not to be seen.

Hugging her letter to his chest he cried like a child.

Raghava led a disinterested life.Neither did he go to temple nor leave his house.Wherever he turned he could only see her smiling face.Her laughter echoed in his ears.He would hug her saree and sleep.He only ate when Chandramma fed him.Fearing that he would lose his mental stability,she coaxed him to go to his parents as a change of place and people might give him peace.

Heeding her words he returned home and were welcomed by his parents.He looked shabby.They were saddened seeing their only son in such a state.

R: Sasha....sasha...

His parents consoled him.

"Ahem...ahem..."

He saw a familiar hand holding a glass of water.His gaze travelled upwards and he saw Sasha standing right before him.

S: What are you looking?Drink this...

He was hesitant as he thought was hallucinating until she pinched him on his arm.

R: Aahhh!

S: See I'm real!You must be thirsty after travel save the reaction for later and drink this first.

R: Sasha!😃

He couldn't contain his happiness and hugged her tightly not minding his parents.

S: Errr...your parents are watching us...behave decently...

She slowly distangled herself from his hold.

R: I can't believe you are here!I thought I lost you!

R's mom: You almost did lose her...

R's dad: That day we came to Mantralaya and met Sasha at the train station.She was waiting to catch a train to another city.

R's mom: We spoke to her and she told us everything.We suggested her to come along and live with us.

Raghava looked at her.

S: Remember our convo once when you said I could stay with your parents if I wished?I recalled that.After leaving your place,I didn't know where to go and also was hopingyou would have a change of heart someday and come looking for me so I agreed to go with them.

His mother went and stood beside Sasha holding her close.

R's mom: She has become a daughter to us.Looks after us so well.After she came we didn't miss you one bit.

R's dad: Hereafter no more wasting time.We are getting you both married on the next auspicious day!

He hugged his parents.

R: Amma,nanna I'm truly blessed to have you in my life.Despite knowing about the sin I committed before marriage...

S: Huh...uh...amma,I can smell something is burning in the kitchen...

She intervened trying to divert the topic.His parents swapped confused looks.

R's mom: What sin before marriage?

R: That only amma..what Sasha told you...

She stomped his foot to silence him.

Keeping the steel tumbler aside she caught the sides of her saree and raising it till her knees she walked towards her shy husband.Seeing that he giggled.

R: You still haven't learnt to walk in a saree?

S: No but I will learn....if you tie for me.

She winked at him.

S: I am feeling suffocated in this can I take it off pls?

He helped her remove the pins and she undraped the cloth around her body.Chucking it aside she brought the tumbler of milk and gave him.He drank some and fed her the remaining.

S: What next?

R: Shall I switch off the light?😉

Unable to meet his teasing glances,her cheeks coloured crimson thus feeling shy for the first time.He embraced her and she melted into his caress.♥️
