Spill The Tea - Top 13 Anime I Love
So here is it...the top 13 anime I love. Why 13? I like the number. That's all. Anyways, I just wanted to list the anime I enjoy watching the most and my reasons why. Please note that this is my opinionated list and this means nothing in terms of best anime. If you disagree with a ranking or choice, we can have a friendly discussion about it in the comments.
13. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
This anime is a perfect example of a deconstruction anime, with the genre of magical girls. Being a magical girl all in all is great, since you can fight with your friends, but what are the costs of doing so? What happens when a magical girl trails down the wrong path? What if they die? This anime answers all these questions in brutal and jaw-dropping matters along with the most tragic magical girl backstory ever for one of the characters. (Still waiting for a sequel movie for Rebellion!)
12. Yugioh (all series)
(Unfortunately the only gif I could find only featured three of the six protagonists :( )
This anime was the core of my childhood. Yeah, Pokémon and Dragon Ball Z were important as well but this was my first official anime I've watched. Yes, it may seem like a kids show to many with cheesy tropes but it has some of the greatest character development I've ever seen, even on a kids show ranking.
11. Attack on Titan
A post-apocalyptic anime taking place in the future where Titans have pushed humanity to the brink of extinction. Hope only exists in the Survey Corps, a group of soldiers who venture out the walls in the losing war against the Titans. Eren Yeager wants nothing more than revenge from the Titans that took his mother's life, but here's the catch; he's actually one of them himself! The anime is suspenseful and will keep you asking questions for what happens next. This would be higher on the list if it weren't for season 2, however. Season 2 just ruined the anime for me, seeing that they've developed characters I honestly couldn't care about for literally most of the season and making me scream for not developing characters I actually care about. (Eren??? Reiner??? Bertholdt??? Possibly Eren's father??? Why Ymir and Christa???)
10. Food Wars!
This anime was just a guilty pleasure of mine since I do enjoy watching shows with food. However, I began to enjoy the characters along the way as well. Soma's prideful and arrogant behavior is not usually traits you see in a protagonist and I want to see how far will he let his pride take him when he competes against the best chefs in the world.
9. Hibike! Euphonium
A relatable musical anime, I fell in love with it almost immediately at first sight. So many dynamic characters all with different backgrounds and goals all coming together as one orchestra. Adding on that it is animated by Kyoto Animation, it's one of the most beautiful anime I've ever seen. Also, Asuka Tanaka for best side character EVER.
8. Yuri!! On ice!
Sports anime don't really attract me because I'm not into sports. However, this anime captured my heart with its beautiful and catchy opening. A love story between a devastated ice skater and a renowned world champion skater makes for one of the best stories I've ever seen. Although the animation didn't live up to what I was expecting (in defense they were experimenting with a new style of animation), it pulled me in.
7. Danganronpa 3
A anime-exclusive continuation of a popular "who dunnit" visual novel, Danganronpa 3 explores the life of the Remnants of Despair before they turned to despair as well as what becomes of them after Makoto Naegi discovers who they really were. A fast-paced anime full of its moments with the nagging thought of knowing this will end badly, this continuation is one of the greats (and makes up for the terrible anime adaptation of the visual novel).
6. Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid
A slice of life with a fantasy undertone, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid explores the life of Kobayashi after she comes into contact with Tohru one drunk encounter, who happens to be a dragon. With the large magnitude of characters, from the loyal Tohru to the heart-stealer Kanna and the hermit Fafnir, each character is quirky is their own way and I loved the brightness of this anime.
5. Death Note
A classic "who dunnit" anime, Death Note is a police murder-mystery anime investigating mysterious deaths of citizens by a god who claims to be "Kira-the new god of the new world", who is Light Yagami. The main makeup of the anime is watching Light Yagami and L, the main detective of the case, play the game of cat and mouse in a race to see who achieves their goals first-will L figure out who Kira is and will Light kill his greatest enemy? Although the anime does go downhill after Light achieves his goals, it's still an influential classic and I will love it despite that flaw.
4. Code Geass
Another renowned classic. Following Lelouch, prince of Britannia, who's goals are to take the kingdom from his father and reunite it, he gets his chance when he obtains the power of Geass, the ability to command anyone whomst he looks at. It's not all good though, as he realizes that one slip-up can lead to mass massacre within a blink of an eye. Despite that, he plays as both the prince with an iron fist who is a jerk to the people but a man with good deeds to us as well as rebel leader Zero, the ending was complete satisfaction. (Though I can't say that anymore because season 3 ruined everything)
3. Doukyusei Classmates
A coming of age story following two students, one being the Mr. perfect-A's and the other being a musician, this love story with both beautiful and tragic at times. In the end, I found myself cheering and bawling for our main couple.
2. Kill La Kill
Revenge quest following Ryuko Matoi, who aspires to learn who murdered her father. A fast-paused anime that will keep you hooked with each and every episode as well as great soundtrack (DON'T LOSE YOUR WAY!!!), what keeps this anime at number one is the excessive amount of fan service within the anime. Although (unbelievably if I say it-watch the anime) it is essential to the plot as clothing is the main source of conflict for the anime. Regardless of that, it sits here at the number two spot.
1. Durarara!!/K Peoject
What can I say? These two anime were my gateway anime. I arrived on Netflix and got hooked on these two underrated anime. Me, hooked on these anime that is considered "boring" to all. Me, who came back from watching Yugioh, Dragon Ball Z, and Pokémon. Me, appreciating these two anime for getting me into anime, these two will always have a special place in my heart.
Durarara!! follows the story of Mikado Ryugamine, a new comer to Ikebukuro, as he learns to "fit in" with the high energy city. Although considered "bland" in the beginning, his boredom and realization that he will never be hooked and amazed with anything, forever, he takes a turn for the worse and becomes a cunning, manipulative man for his own entertainment and to ensure that his legacy will live on forever. AND it has my favorite anime soundtrack of all time-specifically season one.
K Project follows a teen named Yashiro who was wrongly accused of murder for beloved Red Clan member. After claiming that he has nothing to do with it, it is discovered that his original body is possessed by someone known as Colorless King and he was trapped in a student's body who had no idea what was going on.
Yes, both anime aren't perfect, I know. Durarara!! asked way too many questions and never really completely answered all of them and had a rushed ending, since everyone had a happy ending in some way. I do believe that it was linked to lack of viewership of the anime, since the manga was going strong at the time but is unfortunately on hiatus right now (or the wiki people are terrible at updating the page...). K Project doesn't explain everything behind the characters and some antagonists were introduced in really late in the anime and not given enough time to become a full-fleshed antagonists.
But, despite these flaws, I still love them and rank them number one. Yes, it may be biased because they were my gateway anime, but it's because of that reason that I hold these anime dear to my heart and rank them as my top favorite anime of all time.
(Anyways, since 13 is not a high enough number to cover all of my favorite anime, I will give a general overview to why I like these anime that didn't make the list as well).
Honorable Mentions:
One Punch Man
This anime has so many unique characters that are quirky and attractive in their own ways and one of the most well-done OP characters ever
Ouran High School Host Club
A reverse harem anime that I absolutely adore. An anime about a girl cross-dressing as a boy learning to depend on friends, even when she doesn't need to and letting go some of her independence is one of the best stories I've watched so far
Lucky Star
High school comedy anime with its own relatable moments and dynamic characters. Every episode always cracked me up in some way.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
A story of two brothers atoning for their mistakes in the past leads to a journey of heartbreak, questioning what it means to be human, friendship (both unlikely and likely), enemies, and knowing that family is always there no matter what. It is a classic 2000's anime and yes, I have to agree; it's also a good gateway anime as well.
