Remember
The teenage adopted- son of Tony Stark peered around the corner before making his way to the lab. Where, he assumed, his adopted-father was. The brown-headed boy entered the lab to see his dad zooming in on a screen then tapping the air but moving photos across screens.
"Hey, Pete." Tony called out, not turning around.
"Hey Dad, I have a couple of questions," Peter was twiddling his thumbs and looking skeptical at Tony. The billionaire stopped what he was doing and looked to Peter.
"What category do these questions fall under? Maturity? Growth? Women? Recreation of life?" Tony was stepping closer to Peter as each question was asked.
"Mostly getting to know your life before me," Peter laid out flat. His mother, Pepper Stark, was talking to him before he went out on patrol last night. She talked about how Tony was an awful drunk at what deemed to be his 'last birthday party'. Turned out that Tony created a new element and didn't die though. This got Peter in all types of confusion. Sure, Peter knew about the whole Stark Industries thing before he had even met Ned. He was like six. He remembered when he met Tony the day after though. The man had stood right by his side and destroyed a robot. Peter couldn't help but smile when he had said, "Good job, Kid."
"M-My life before you? Ah, kid, it was awful. I don't think you would want to-," Tony was cut off by a look that screamed Peter had picked it up from Pepper. "Gosh, Pepper would look at you and be proud if she saw the face you were making right now," Tony snorted.
"Dad, remember when you first met me? I watched you sign little girls' pictures of you then you ruffled my head before you kept going. I wore the Iron Man mask the whole time? Then, you saved me when I thought I could hold my own against that robot? That's when I knew I could always trust and look up to you. I want to know what happened before," Peter demanded. Tony sighed and rubbed his dirt covered hands across his equally dirty face.
"Alright, you win," Tony sighed as he took a seat and put his goggles on his head. Peter also took a seat. "Where do you want me to start?" Tony asked.
"When did you and Rhodey really become best friends?"
Tony couldn't help but smile a bit, "Well, that's a long one. He was known as Colonel Rhodes, technically still is but whatever. Anyway, it was during the roughest part of my life. During my birthday party that I thought was to be my last due to my arc reactor. This is also when I met Nat. She was undercover to help with Pepper being CEO. Turned out she was a spy and agent for Nick Fury. He was trying to get my to join. I declined, but look where I am now." Tony sighed as he relaxed a bit more as he remembered how amazing those years were.
"That's new info," Peter was sitting there with the most innocent and excited expression. Tony just wanted to keep the kid in his arms forever. He would never admit that though.
"Anyway, when I got a little too tipsy Rhodey took matters into his own hands and took one of my suits. We fought it out. In the end, he got away with my suit and became war machine," Tony clasped his hands together and watched Peter. The boy was listening very intently. "We had to fight the bad guy and we did it together. We were forever best friends after that," Tony ended.
Peter smiled, "Thanks." Tony then noticed that Peter was writing.
"That's a paper for school isn't it?"
"Yup! I had to write something on my parents past. I didn't want to do my birth parents so you're the best one to go to." Peter smiled. Tony couldn't help but smile back.
"Peter, I want to thank you for talking though. It did help. I also remember you when I stood by you and all. I will always remember because that was you and I love you and you will always change me for the good. Come here," Tony stood and outstretched his arms. The boy shot into them. He was shorter but tall enough that Tony could rest his chin in the curls of Peters hair.
"I'm sorry you went through that. I know it was hard. Your dad loved you just as much as you love me. He's proud of you. Grandpa is proud," Peter said as he hugged harder.
"I know. I'm proud of you also. For everything," Tony whispered back.
"Then I realized that he's gone soft and couldn't help but think that he's truly over with his rough spot," Rhodey said from the doorway as he entered the lab.
Tony and Peter looked at the man. Tony let go and smiled nervously. "Fuck you too," Tony smiled as he crossed his arms.
"Just saying the facts Tones. Besides, this is nice. I think you needed someone like Pete. Did good kid. Also, I was wondering if you wanted to train with me. That's what I came in here for," Rhodey chuckled.
"Yeah! I'd love that!" Peter shot out of the lab to put on his suit. Rhodey turned to Tony with a smirk.
"We've came a long way. Not once did I believe you would become a father Tony. Yet, here we are. I'm an uncle now," Rhodey sighed.
"I know. God, I know. And not once did I think I'd be so lucky. I don't deserve-."
"No, you didn't deserve this. You do now. Now, come watch your kid be Spiderman." Rhodey motioned for him to follow. Tony stood, grabbed a rag and cleaned his hands as he walked out.
