Waking Up
Barbara was sleeping on a bed at the medical room of SHIELD. By her sides were Peter and Dinah, in their civilian clothes. Peter had learned everything about The Joker. From what he learned, Joker was a monster. "So your uncle was her dad's roommate?" Dinah asked, jumping to a conclusion. "Yep," said Peter, "You and Jim will keep my secret safe, right?"
"Don't worry, your secret is safe with us," promised Dinah, smiling. Peter looked sadly at Barbara and said, "Can't believe he did all those despicable things to her... Especially since he killed so many SHIELD Agents... I think out of all the monsters I've encountered, he might be the most monstrous of all."
Barbara then started groaning. She was waking up. "Morning sleepyhead," said Dinah. Barbara slowly opened her eyes, and looked around, recognizing her two friends. "Peter? Dinah? Where am I?" she asked, confused. "You're in the medical center of SHIELD," explained Peter. Barbara, wanting to go home, tried to get up, but Dinah stopped her and said, "Easy coach... You need to rest."
"What about Gotham?" Barbara asked. "Gotham can wait Babs," assured Dinah. "I'm not going to prison because I killed Joker, am I?" asked Barbara. "Don't worry, your dad's gonna cover this," said Peter, causing Barbara to sigh in relief. True, in her heart, she was not sorry for killing him. "How about we talk, as your friends?" Peter offered, holding Barbara's hand. She blushed when he held her hand. "Babs, I'm sorry for not being there for you when you were at your darkest point," apologized Dinah. "We both are," said Peter, "and I'm sorry for not telling you I'm Spider-Man."
"I can forgive you for that..." said Barbara, "Peter, when I was Darkwing, I said things about you that were cruel and resentful, and I'm sorry I said those things..." There was silence for a few minutes.
"Do you remember when we first met, and you hugged me during my Uncle Ben's funeral, and let me know it was going to be okay?" Peter asked, looking at Barbara. "How can I forget?" Barbara rhetorically asked, having an eidetic memory. "That act of kindness helped me on that day," said Peter. "What's that got to do with me?" Barbara asked. "You were my hero on that day," said Peter, "now it's my turn to be your hero..." He then hugged her. Barbara hugged back, burying her head in his shoulder. Dinah gently put her hand on Barbara's back and softly said, "It's okay Barbara, you're among friends... You can let it out..." Barbara usually preferred to cry alone since the day she got shot, but she'd held back two years worth of pain. She could trust Peter and Dinah. She then cried on Peter's shoulder. Peter just gently held her back and forth. After a few minutes of hugging and crying, Babs let go of the hug, feeling better.
Peter had been debating with himself whether he had feelings for Barbara. He was tempted to tell her after Gwen's death, but he never did. He decided to wait a little longer. "Barbara, what if I told you that we have technology that could cure your paralysis?" Peter asked. "Do you mean it?" Barbara asked, surprised, earning a nod from Peter. Suddenly, Tony Stark then walked into the room and said, "He sure does. Oh, where are my manners? Tony Stark is the name, I'm Peter's boss, pleasure to meet you Miss Gordon." Barbara shook Mr. Stark's hand and said, "Nice to meet you as well Mr. Stark. Now what's this I hear about technology that could cure paralysis?"
"Well I discovered nanotechnology that can actually cure paralysis," explained Tony, "from what Peter and I read from your hospital records, The Joker's bullet cut your spine in half, thus causing the paralysis. My nanotech could potentially undo the damage that clown did. Interested?" Barbara didn't even hesitate as she smiled and said, "Yes! When can we do the procedure?" Tony smirked and said, "How about this Monday?"
