A lot can happen in one year. Barbara's retirement couldn't last. Six months later, Kate Kane, the original Batwoman, sacrificed herself to save Gotham. And with that, the mantle of the Batwoman was passed on to Barbara, which she accepted. Her successor to Batgirl was a young woman named Cassandra Cain. So Barbara was back as the Head Female Bat, and better than ever. She was out on patrol one night in her Batwoman costume, perched on top of a gargoyle. Everything was peaceful. That is...

"You know, I can tell where you two are hiding. Come on out," said Batwoman. Out of the shadows was Spider-Man, and Bruce Wayne, in his usual business suit. "Hey Babs," said a jovial Spider-Man. "Hey Peter," said an equally jovial Batwoman as she hugged her old friend, "Bruce, good to see you. What brings you and Spidey here?" In his natural gruff Batman voice, Bruce said, "I recently talked with SHIELD. They've expressed an interest to form an Avengers Base here in Gotham." Batwoman gave a look of surprise and said, "Wow, that's great!"

"What's even greater is that a team's being formed here," explained Spider-Man, "it's called The Gotham Avengers. I'm being recruited as a team member and moving here." Barbara took off her mask and said, "Cool name. And congratulations Peter!" She was happy for him. "There's more to it than you realize," continued Bruce, "The Gotham Avengers need someone to lead the team. Peter and I were wondering Barbara... How would you like to be the team's leader?"
