Prologue (or: Babs in Crisis)

There was a rehabilitation center for superheroes that were going through personal problems that were hard. Whether it be superheroes suffering from PTSD, physical injuries/disabilities, personal addictions, and so on and so forth. It was a safe haven for heroes who didn't have to wear the suits and could just talk. One of the many who would go there was the wheelchair bound Barbara Gordon, former Batgirl and current Oracle. A year ago she was offered the chance to go to this rehabilitation center for broken superheroes. She was invited by her Birds of Prey cohort and confidant Black Canary, who was the one she talked to the most at the rehabilitation center. She felt better talking to Dinah there. One day, Barbara rolled her wheelchair to the rehabilitation center, and went to the room that she and Dinah would talk at. Dinah was there, making tea for the two of them. "Hello Babs," said Dinah, "I've been expecting you."

"Hey Dinah," she said, smiling. Dinah gave her a cup and Barbara said, "thank you." She sipped her tea. "So how have things been for you?" Dinah asked. "Things are alright," said Barbara, "I've been thinking lately... Did I tell you about my pen pal?" Dinah sipped her tea and said, "no, I don't believe you have." Barbara sipped her tea and said, "my Dad had a roommate in college. His name was Ben Parker. Ben was my father's best friend. When I was 15, Ben Parker was killed by some burglar. I remember attending his funeral. Met his wife May, and their nephew Peter. Peter was around my age, and he was smart like me. We instantly liked each other. So much, that we became pen pals. I've been writing to him for six years. You won't tell anyone else what I'm about to say, will you?"

"This conversation won't leave this room," assured Dinah. Barbara breathed in and said, "for six years, I've never told Peter I was Batgirl. At the time, I was sworn to secrecy. But there were days I wanted to tell him... I never told him what Joker did to me. Peter was still dealing with the death of his girlfriend Gwen Stacy. I didn't want him to worry about me..." Dinah listened and asked, "and he doesn't know of your paralysis?" Barbara shook her head and said, "he doesn't. But ever since I became Oracle... I've been wanting to tell him everything... He's the only man I trust... You know what I mean?" Dinah nodded and said, "I do. It isn't easy finding someone to tell of one's alter egos. You really care for Peter Parker, don't you?" Barbara blushed and said, "I like him a lot more than Dick, actually. Do you think I should tell him?" Dinah held Barbara's hand and said, "only if your heart believes it's the right thing to do." Barbara nodded. Little did she know that her pen pal had secrets of his own.
