Chapter 55: The Sokovia Accords Debate
(Two weeks later)
(Upstate New York)
Y/N's P.O.V
It's been two weeks since what happened in Lagos and that incident has caused the Avengers reputation to decline.
Wanda has been taking this harder than anyone.
I head to her room to check in on her.
I stand at the entrance and see Wanda sitting on her bed watching news reports.
News reporter: What legal authority does an enhanced individual like Wanda Maximoff have to operate in Nigeria?
I switch off the TV.
Wanda: It's my fault.
Y/N: It's really not.
Wanda: Turn the TV back on, they're being very specific.
I to sit next to her on the bed.
Y/N: Wanda, you did your best. That's all any of us can do.
I sigh.
Y/N: Steve told me that when it comes to this job we try to save as many people as we can, but that doesn't mean we can save everyone. And if we don't find a way to live with that, then maybe next time nobody gets saved.
Wanda: Yeah. You're right.
She looks at me.
Wanda: Wise words.
I chuckle.
Y/N: I know.
She and I hug.
Just then Vision phases through the wall.
Wanda: Vis, we talk about this.
Vision: Well, the door was open so I assumed... anyway Captain Rogers wanted Mr. L/N to know that Mr. Stark was here.
Y/N: Okay. Thanks, Vision. We'll be right down.
Vision: I'll use the door this time.
Vision walks to the door and turns around.
Vision: Oh and apparently he's brought a guest.
Y/N: Who is it?
Vision: The secretary of the state. Thaddeus Ross.
He then walks out.
I look to Wanda.
Y/N: Come on, let's go.
We both leave the room and go to the meeting, and sit down with secretary Ross.
All of us Avengers are now in the meeting room sitting infront of Secretary Ross.
I'm sat on one side with Steve, Natasha, Kate, and Rhodes. Sam, Ben, Vision and Wanda are sat on the other side.
Ross explains to us how many people now see the Avengers as a threat given how many innocent people have died during the battles in New York, Washington, Sokovia and Lagos.
He also tells us about the Sokovia accords and how where the Avengers are allowed to go will be decided by a UN panel and that the UN will be meeting in Vienna to agree to the accords.
Ross decides leaves so that we can talk it over in private.
Natasha: And if we come to a decision that you don't like?
Ross: Then you retire.
After that he leaves the compound.
Cap sighs.
Steve: Alright, let's go and talk about this.
We leave and go to the lounge to talk about the Accords.
As we talk Cap sits in a chair reading through the Accords document.
Rhodey: Secretary Ross a metal of honor, which is one more than you have.
Sam: So let's say we agree to this. How long we got before they start LoJack us like a bunch of common criminals?
Rhodey: A hundred and Seventeen countries what to sign this. A hundred and Seventeen Sam, and you just like "No, that's cool. We got it."
I decide to speak up.
Y/N: How long are you gonna keep playing both sides for, Rhodes?
He was about to reply when Vision speaks up.
Vision: I have an equation.
Sam: Oh, well this'll clear it up.
Vision starts explaining to us how our strength and enhanced abilities we have invites challege from other people and that brings conflict which bring catastrophe.
Rhodey: Boom.
Sam and I shake our heads.
Natasha: Tony, you're being uncharacteristically non-hyperverbal.
Steve: It's because he's already made up his mind.
Tony: Oh, you know me so well. I'm actually nursing a headache. That's all it is Cap, pain and discomfort.
Tony goes up to get a cup of coffee then he pulls put his phone and shows us an image of a young guy about my age.
Tony: Oh, that's Charles Spencer by the way. He's a great kid. Computer engineering degree, 3.6 GPA and had a floor level gig at Intel planned for the fall. But he wanted to put a few miles on his soul, before he parked it behind a desk. See the world. Maybe be of service. Charlie didn't go to Vegas or Amsterdam like I would have. No he decided to spend his summer building housing for people in Sokovia.
We all realise Charles Spencer was in Sokovia during the Avengers fight with Ultron.
Ben: Oh, shit.
Tony: I guess he wanted to make a difference, but I guess we'll never know as we dropped a building on him whilst we were kicking ass.
He comes over to us.
Tony: We need to be put in check and whatever form that takes I'm game. If we can accept limitations, if we're boundary-less than we're no better than the bad guys.
Steve: Tony, if someone dies on your watch you don't give up.
Tony: Who says we're giving up?
Steve: We are if we're not taking responsibility for our actions. This document just shifts the blame.
Rhodey: I'm sorry Steve, but that's dangerously arrogant. This the UN we're talking about it's not S.H.I.E.L.D, it's not HYDRA.
I look to Rhodey.
Y/N: Yeah, but Rhodey, this thing. This document it's run by people with agendas and agendas can always change.
Tony walks closer.
Tony: That's good, kid. When I found out what my weapons were capable of in the wrong hands, I shut it down and stopped manufacturing.
I look up at Tony.
Y/N: But Tony, you chose to do that. We sign this we surrender our right to choose.
I look at everyone as I continue.
Y/N: If we sign this, we're giving up everything that makes us human. If we sign we become government weapons, we lose what makes us people. All they see us as is a bunch of freaks.
Steve: Y/N's right. What if this panel sends us somewhere we don't wanna go? What if there's somewhere we need to go and they don't let us? We may not be perfect but the safest hands are still our own.
Y/N: Thank you.
Tony: If we don't do this now, it's gonna happen to us later.
Wanda: You mean they'd come for me.
Vision: We would protect you.
Natasha: Maybe Tony's right. We've gotta read the terrain.
Sam: Aren't you the woman who told the government to kiss her ass a couple years back?
Natasha: I am, but we have to do this.
Kate: I agree with Natasha.
I sigh.
Y/N: You gotta be kidding me.
Kate: Look maybe signing this is how we earn the people's trust back.
Tony: Hold on focus up, I coulda sworn you just agreed with me.
Natasha: Oh believe me I wanna take it back.
Tony: No, no you can't retract it. Okay, cased close. I win.
Y/N: I'm sorry, Tony, but I ain't siging that.
I see Cap look at his phone then stand up.
Steve: I'll be back in a minute.
Cap gets up and leaves the room.
I can't believe that this is happening to us.
