For the first time, Miles made sure he looked presentable for the day. And it was just a Saturday.
But he made sure his t-shirt was at least fairly clean and smelled more like dryer sheets than his floor, and he brushed his teeth twice, and he let his mom do whatever she wanted to his hair, and he put on Chapstick and then put on the green jacket that you loved on him-
And then when you knocked on the door, he made sure that he was the one that answered it so his parents wouldn't embarrass him.
It wasn't like this was your first time over to hang out with him or even your first weekend as boyfriend and girlfriend. You'd been dating Miles since last summer. But now it was weird because he was seriously starting to like you, and he felt like he just had to impress you.
So any chance he had, he was doing things for you. Spray painting your face underground at the subway. Bringing you flowers he picked up from a corner store. Getting you bags of your favorite chips at the vending machine after school. Telling everyone that you were his girl and bragging about you every single chance he had.
But on Saturday, you both just laid on the couch together, the lights off, the curtains shut, and watched a few movies.
He would keep his arms around your shoulders, and you would lean into him a little.
"This movie is stupid," he complained.
You pretended to gasp in shock. "What? The acting is so great though."
"Whatever," he laughed. "It's so horrible."
"Obviously," you said. You looked up at him and smiled. "You just don't get sarcasm, do you?"
"Shut up," he said, and you kissed him softly on the lips. He closed his eyes, and when your lips moved back, brushing against his chin before disappearing completely, he opened them.
And he just looked at you lovingly.
"So if this movie is so stupid, then what do you want to do?"
He inhaled and just looked at you. If he really had his way, he would choose to just stare at your face until you had to go home. But Uncle Aaron would tell him that that was creepy and was no way to keep a girlfriend.
"Want to listen to music?" he asked.
"Uh, sure," you said. sat up and he got his arm free. He grabbed his earbuds and his phone and then handed you one of the earbuds. You put it in and he turned on his favorite song.
Then he put his arm back around you, because he didn't like not having it around your shoulders.
You reached over and turned the volume up all the way for him.
He moved his head along to the song and you smiled, leaning your head against his shoulder. He hummed along and you felt it against your cheek.
As it played, you shut your eyes. The song was long and it had a beat that was relaxing, and you were warm when Miles held you close, and you were so happy.
When the song ended, it came on again, starting from the beginning. You looked up at him.
"Why is this playing again?" you asked.
"Uh... because it reminds me of you. Now stop complaining so this stays romantic."
You laughed and grabbed his hand, the one that was hanging off of your shoulder. You kissed the side of his wrist and said, "This is romantic. I love you, Miles."
He looked down at you. "Yeah?"
"Mhm." You were trying to hide the wide grin you wanted to show, because you knew that he loved you, too. You weren't scared to say it for the first time and you didn't have to worry about what he would say back.
He leaned back, moving his arm off of him. He put his hand on your shoulder.
"Hey," he said, voice deep.
You pushed him off. "What in the world are you doing?" you laughed.
"I'm flirting!"
"You're already dating me, you dummy!"
He was laughing hard and you were shaking your head. "I can still flirt with you. Keep the romance alive!"
"If you wanna keep the romance alive," you said, "then try saying I love you back."
"Okay, okay, okay. Well, I kinda love you, too," he said. "Kinda."
"Kinda?" you asked.
"Just a little," he said. He put his arm around you.
You kissed him again, just once.
Then Miles restarted the song. You put your head back in the dip of his shoulder.
This time, Miles sang along. Because the song really did remind him of you.
And he seriously, seriously loved you.
