You were six months pregnant, and while you weren't really panicking about the future at all, your husband, Peter, was.

While you made a cake for Miles, who was visiting, your husband was sitting at the kitchen table, a stack of pregnancy books next to him and one open in front of him.

He had his pair of reading glasses on and his eyebrows were pulled together in deep concentration.

"Peter, can you help me get this cake out of the oven?" you asked, taking off your oven mitt and holding to out to him. "Peter?"

"Huh?" He looked up at you. "Oh, yeah." Taking the glasses off his nose, he grabbed the mitt and put it on. "You don't need to be lifting anything right now. Did you know that pregnant women can't-"

"Peter," you laughed, "You need to lay off the books."

"Why? I'm just trying to get this dad thing down, babe!" He got the cake out of the oven and then shut it. "Is this cake not chocolate?"

"No," you said.

"Why not?"

"Because it's for Miles, and Miles likes vanilla cake with chocolate frosting, Peter," you said.

"What?" he muttered.

"He told us once before..."

"Really?" he asked.

You gave him a look. He seemed genuinely bothered by the fact that he didn't know his friend's favorite flavor of cake - and you just didn't get it.

"Peter?"

He looked at you. "It's just like... I have this whole pregnancy thing down. But... what about the actual dad thing? Like, my kid's food allergies and what they like and what they don't like - I mean, I've known Miles for years and I haven't even remembered his favorite cake!"

"Peter, honey, you're overreacting," you said. You touched his face and smiled. "You're okay. You're going to be a great dad. But if you really are worried about it, maybe... maybe pretend Miles is your son. Just for tonight."

He nodded slowly. "Yeah. Yeah, I can do that. Easy."

"Okay." You smiled and kissed his cheek. "I love you, Peter. Our baby is lucky that you're their dad."

He smiled back and wrapped his arms around you. His lips pressed against your hair and he shut his eyes. Breathing deeply, he sighed, "I love you."

When there was a knock on the door, Peter literally ran to get it. You grabbed the tub of frosting and a butterknife while you listened to your husband greet Miles.

"Miles! Hey buddy, how ya been?"

"I'm good, Peter. How are you?"

"Fantastic. Man, you're getting tall. It's like you're a grown man now."

You cringed and shook your head. "Jeez..."

"Eating plenty of vegetables, huh-?"

"Peter!" you cut him off, walking into the living room. "Hey, Miles!"

"Hey, Mrs. Parker," he said.

"It's good to see you again," you said.

"Yeah, you too. How's Baby Parker?"

"Getting big," you said, touching your stomach. You patted it and Peter walked over to you, putting a hand on your side.

"I'm really happy for you guys."

You smiled and hugged Peter for a moment. "Babe, you want to get Miles a soda?"

"Sure, sure. Miles, come on, I'll let you pick. There's ginger ale and cola and orange and - hey, if you don't like any of these, we can go out and get some."

"No, I'm okay with these, Pete," Miles said, following him into the kitchen. "Hey, you okay, man? You're acting weird."

"How am I acting weird?" Peter laughed. "Just trying to make sure my little buddy is taken care of is all."

"Don't... call me your little buddy, you weirdo. We're friends." Miles was laughing, though, and you were just listening with your face behind your fingers, your cheeks heating up with secondhand embarrassment.

"So, Miles," you heard, "what's been going on?"

You heard Miles crack open a soda. "Uh, not much, man. Finished my midterms... now I get a weekend free before my fifteenth birthday."

"Fifteen? Wow, you're getting old."

"Not really. But yeah, I'm excited. Ganke is coming over and my mom is making all my favorite foods, and then she and my dad are leaving and it's just gonna be me and Ganke and Gwen so far."

"Cool, very cool. What do you guys have planned?"

"Uh, movies. Nachos. Maybe some video games."

"Sounds awesome. You know what would be more awesome, though? Okay, so my fifteenth birthday I had a few friends over, and yeah, I was a geek kind of, but I had a few friends. And we snuck some beer, and-"

You quickly walked into the kitchen. "Peter Benjamin Parker!" you exclaimed. "Are you kidding me?"

"Crap," he muttered.

You looked at him with wide eyes, waiting for an answer.

"Tell me you aren't seriously suggesting underage drinking at a fifteen year old's party?"

"I mean - if it's responsible-"

"Peter!"

Miles laughed. "Yeah man, my dad is a cop. There isn't even a bottle of beer in my house."

You shook your head at Peter still, and then you went into the living room.

"___," he called after you, and you heard him jogging towards you. "I just wanted - look, I won't encourage our kid to drink, obviously. But Miles is different-"

"Ugh-"

"___, are you seriously mad?"

"No, I'm not mad," you said, and you realized that was true. You turned to look at him and you sighed. You put your hands on Peter's face and pulled him down to your level. "I love you, Peter. But if you allow our child to drink as a teenager..."

"I know, I know. You'll kick my butt." He smiled.

"Yeah, I will," you said. You kissed his forehead. "I love you, Peter. I know it'll be tough, and you don't always know what to do. Guess what? Me neither. You think I don't get nervous when I think about labor, or staying up all night feeding and changing our baby? Or about how we're gonna afford college for them? I'm scared, Pete. I just don't let myself think about it because of this right here." You grabbed one of his hands and put it on your stomach. Your baby was kicking. "Feel this?"

His eyes widened, and you grinned, because this was the first time he had felt it. He looked like he was going to cry as he shouted, "Miles! Get in here - my baby is kicking!"

"What?" Miles ran inside and Peter made room for him to put his hand on your belly, too. "Wow! You can feel it!"

"I know!"

"Pete, man, you're gonna be a dad. That's so cool."

"I'm gonna be a dad," he repeated, looking at you.

Miles grinned and looked between the both of you, and you started to cry tears of joy as you wrapped your arms around them both.

Around the little family you already had.
