Peter was one hundred percent sure that he wasn't qualified to be a dad.
And jeez, was he right.
The first three months after you had your first kid, a little boy named Ben, Peter thought that the lack of sleep was going to kill you both. But in reality, only he was the one sure that he was going to die from it. You were like some super-human-mom-goddess that handled everything perfectly.
And then not even three years later, when you and Peter had a toddler on your hands, you were pregnant again. With twins.
Not only was there the fear of not being able to send all three kids to college and pay for bills and have money to retire later on, but there was the fear of other things, too.
How was Peter supposed to protect his entire family from the villains that never seemed to get quite as tired as Peter did? He could barely handle them anymore.
He knew what he needed to do.
"I'm going to quit being Spider-Man," he said.
You were feeding the twins, spooning bright orange baby food in to their mouths. You looked at him in shock. "Really?"
He sighed. "I'm considering it."
"Well," you sighed right back, "do what you think is right."
"No," he whined, dropping his head on the kitchen table. "You're supposed to tell me what to do!"
Yoy laughed. "Why me?"
"Because my beautiful, headstrong, independent, and powerful wife is the only one who can lead me." He put his hand on top of yours. He gagged when he got baby food on his finger.
As he wiped it off quickly on a napkin, you laughed.
"Well," you said. You exhaled. "This is your decision, Peter, but I'll help you. On one hand, the late nights are getting ridiculous, and I'm worried about you out there on your own. You're not a teenager anymore."
"I know," he muttered.
"But on the other hand... you protect the city. And with great power comes great responsibility."
He groaned, throwing his head back. "I hate when you use that line."
You smiled. "I know you do. But it's true."
"Daddy, Daddy!" Peter turned in his chair and saw his son - a spitting image of him - running across the kitchen floor, two crayons and a piece of paper in hand.
"What's up, champ?" He picked him up and plopped him on his lap. "What do you have here?"
"Spider-Man!" he said. He pointed at a red and blue blob that looked close enough to a man. "And that's Mommy, and that's me, and that's the babies..."
"Why are you guys flying in the air?"
"We aren't flying, Daddy," he said.
"Oh?"
"No, we're falling. And you are saving us, 'cause you're Spider-Man. And our daddy." He looked up at his dad with wide brown eyes. "See?"
Peter's heart was so full, he was afraid he'd cry. "I-I do see. Yeah. That's really awesome, kid." He kissed him on his cheek.
"I'm gonna make one for Uncle Miles, too!" he exclaimed. He flopped his body, signaling he wanted down.
Peter obliged, watching his son take off for his bedroom, crayons in hand.
"You're his hero, Peter," you said. "Whatever you choose to do, he will always be proud to call you his daddy."
You stood up and walked over to your husband. Standing behind him, you wrapped your arms around his chest. You both stared at the drawing.
"And I will support you no matter what you choose to do." You kissed his hair.
That night, before bed, Peter hung the drawing up on the fridge. He smiled at it.
"Babe?" you called softly. "Coming to bed?"
"Yeah," he said. "Just a second, love."
He stared at it for a moment longer, then flipped the light switch and walked out.
He didn't know what his decision would be yet, but he did know that he'd figure it out. He always did. Life worked out a funny way for Spider-Man, but it was always did it in a right way in the end.
So he wasn't too worried.
