Empty bowls of popcorn and bottles of beer, soda, and half-empty cups of eggnog littered your entire living room. Or rather, your boyfriend Eddie's living room. A black plastic garbage bag dragged against the carpet as you carried it along with you from counter to table, to stove top to bathroom sink. You threw away an entire bag full of trash before you heard the door open with a slam of it against the wall and the shudder of the entire door frame.

Eddie, covered in sweat, pale as a sheet, stood with his hands on either side of the entrance.

You raised your eyebrows. "Well, don't you look nice?"

He glared at you before turning towards the fridge and throwing the doors of it open. He grabbed two bottles of beer and slammed his shoulder against the doors to shut them.

"You know I hate you drinking that much at once," you said.

"Don't care," he said, breathing heavily. He dropped down on the sofa, bottles slipping out of his shaking hands and onto the carpet. He pressed the back of his hand against his face. "I-I didn't mean that. I do care. I just... I can't think right now."

"I know," you said. "I was only kidding with you."

He dropped his hand and picked up a beer. He opened it with the twist of his hand and threw his head back, clutching the neck of the bottle as he chugged it down. He came up gasping for air.

"Tough night, huh?" you asked, carefully sitting next to him on the opposite side of the couch. You sat the bag down.

"We chased, uh, a bunch of guys that keep buyin' people. Girls, you know." He grimaced in disgust. "It was horrible."

"I bet it was. But you're a hero, Eddie. What you and Venom do... I know the police don't see it as anything but illegal activity, you hunting down serial killers and criminals and taking care of them... but you're doing the city a favor." You scooted closer and reached out. "Do you want me to-?"

He nodded and turned towards you, putting the empty bottle down and rubbing his face tiredly. "Thank you, by the way," he said.

You massaged his shoulders, pressing your thumbs all the way into his shoulder blades. "You don't need to thank me for anything, babe."

"You do more for me than I deserve," he said sadly.

Your fingers paused. You leaned forward and he turned his head. "You know I don't like you talking like that." You kissed his cheek.

"I know," he said, smiling.

"Your Christmas party was a success, by the way," you said, going back to massaging his shoulders.

"Oh, right. I'm sorry about that."

"It's a good thing your girlfriend is the world's best hostess, huh? I got the cookies on the serving trays, ordered the pizza, bought some drinks that you apparently didn't think to buy yesterday at the store, and threw some quick decorations together to make a party that you either forgot about or..."

"I forgot, mostly," he said.

"Mostly," you repeated, laughing softly.

"But how was it? Who all came?" he asked.

You lifted your shoulders in a shrug. "It was alright, kinda boring without having you there. Greg stopped by and was really bummed he couldn't catch up with you. I told them all you were at work, by the way. Only Anne knew that you were really off biting bad peoples' heads off. Speaking of Anne, she was sporting the biggest engagement ring I've ever seen."

"Really?" he asked. "She's finally engaged, huh?"

"I'll say," you said.

He turned towards you. "Are you jealous of Anne?"

"No," you said. "Why would I be?"

"Because she's engaged," he said.

"I'm not jealous." He raised his eyebrows and you laughed, "I'm not!"

"It sounds like you are."

He cupped your face in his hands and kissed you on your forehead. Your eyes squinted shut and you grabbed his wrists, giggling as you pulled him off of you. You smiled.

"I'm not jealous, Eddie," you said.

Eddie grinned. "Good, you don't have to be. Once I find the perfect ring, I'm gonna propose to you. It'll be soon, too. I promise."

"How soon are we talking?" you asked.

"How soon are you thinking?" he pressed.

"If I really got to pick, I would say... Christmas morning, no later," you said jokingly.

He laughed. "So tomorrow. You want me to propose tomorrow?"

"Yes."

He raised his eyebrows. "Well, what you want, you get, I guess."

You beamed. "I love you," you said.

He moved to kiss you on the lips. You turned your head and sat up. "What?" he asked, feelings hurt.

"No way," you said. "Brush your teeth first."

He laughed and moved away. "Fine," he said. He got off of the couch and shuffled towards the bathroom, hand rubbing the back of his neck.

"And take a shower," you said. "You're filthy."

"Yes ma'am," he said.

You shook your head and laughed. "Thank you."

"You're welcome!" he shouted from the bathroom.

Before he shrugged out of his grey hoodie, he felt around for the velvet box in the pocket. He was relieved to feel it in his hands and know it survived the night. Holding it in his palm, he leaned against the bathroom sink and popped the lid open.

For the last four months, he'd been planning to propose Christmas morning. He was going to wrap up the velvet box and stick a bow on top and pretend it was just a normal piece of jewelry until he got down on one knee and asked you to marry him.

But now, he knew he couldn't wait any longer.

"I think I should ask her tonight," he whispered.

REALLY? TONIGHT? Venom spoke in his head.

"Yeah," he said, nodding. "Right now."

YOU HAVE VOMIT ON YOUR SHIRT.

He smiled. "I don't care. She'll say yes."

SHE'S DISGUSTING AND SO ARE YOU.

"Shut up, you eat people. It's your fault I vomited anyway."

YES, BUT YOU ARE THE ONE CHOOSING TO PROPOSE BEFORE YOU EVEN BATHE.

Eddie didn't care. He looked at his reflection in the mirror for a long minute before grabbing his toothbrush and the tube of toothpaste. After brushing his teeth, he washed his face and opened the bathroom door.

"Hey, babe?" he called out, his fingers grabbing the velvet box and putting it in his pocket.

"Yeah?"

"I gotta ask you somethin'."
