"What are you doing here?" you demanded.
Martin Li blinked and smiled uncomfortably. "Uh - um-"
"___, this is Mr. Li," Eddie said.
"I'm well aware of who it is," you said. You walked over to Eddie's bedside, opposite of the man that was in his room. Handing Eddie his water, you put your hand on your husband's once wide, muscular shoulder. "Did you come here for something?"
"___, Eddie murmured in warning.
"I understand that my reputation is a little rocky these days," he said nervously. "Especially after-"
"After you joined the Sinister Six and tried to destroy everything in the city?" you asked bitterly. Eddie exhaled deeply.
Martin Li didn't even let it phase him. He kept his composure. "Yes. But I am okay now. I got some help, changed my life, and now I want to offer Eddie Brock here a chance at life, too." He grinned and looked from you to your husband.
Eddie reached his hand up and brushed his fingers against your knuckles. "What kind of chance?" he asked.
Martin folded his hands together. "What are your chances of survival right now?"
Your stomach hurt as Eddie said, "About fifty-fifty." You found you couldn't look at either of them anymore.
"What if I told you that I could make your chance one hundred percent, Mr. Brock? That I had a treatment available - one that I want to give to you - for no cost at all?"
"I would say... do it," he said. "Give it to me right now." He laughed lightly, and it made your heart hurt. When was the last time he laughed like that because of something you said or did? When was the last time you made him that happy?
You squeezed his hand tight. "Eddie! Shouldn't we at least discuss this?" you hissed.
"What is there to discuss?" he asked. "If I can double my chance of survival, then I'm going to do it."
You lowered yourself to the side of the bed. "Baby, I know you're scared of what might happen. I am, too. But I have faith, okay? And faith can keep you ali-"
"I want a one hundred percent guarantee because if I don't have that, then I can't promise you that I won't leave again." He gave you a serious look. "And I know that it would kill you if you lost me. You can pretend you'd be okay all you want but I can see it. You're strong, but it'd destroy you."
You knew in your heart that he was right. Tears filled your eyes and you shook your head. He kept nodding rubbing your hands in his.
"I know," he said. "I know-"
"I don't trust him," you mouthed.
"Honey, he's our only chance."
Eddie was right. And it made you sick to your stomach, but he was right. You'd been holding onto faith that your husband would make it out of this, but the truth was, he'd lost a lot of weight, the pink in his skin was fading away, and his hair was gone. The chemo and radiation combined were enough to make him sick, and those were supposed to be helping him.
"Come here," he breathed. Putting his hand on the back of your head, he brought your forehead forward until it touched his. You both sat there for a long moment while you cried and he kept his eyes closed.
"I want to do the right thing. For you, baby. I want to do the right thing," he rasped.
When you pulled away and nodded, and Eddie looked at Martin Li, you realized that he had been standing there smiling the whole time.
"What do you say, Mr. Brock? Would you like to receive this treatment to maybe get a little more time with your wife?"
Your stomach turned.
"Yes," Eddie answered, and it was like he was signing up to give himself away.
//
After that, things were really different.
Eddie was receiving treatment at a different hospital. At first you were wary of it all, but it only took a month of it before Eddie started to be able to do things on his own. Suddenly, he had the strength in his legs to shower on his own and was able to go get the mail and go upstairs all by himself.
The only downside was that you weren't allowed to be in the room when Eddie received his new treatment.
It worried you, having to push his wheelchair to a certain point and then have two people in weird suits take him the rest of the way. But three and a half hours after you'd drop him off, he'd be pushed right back to you, tired but happy. Happier than you'd seen him in a long time.
Towards the end of his treatment, he was offered a position at F.E.A.S.T. You were thrilled for him, because he had quit his job as a reporter shortly before going missing when he still had Venom.
F.E.A.S.T was close enough to your house that you would bring him lunch every day. Even though he had to mostly work from his wheelchair, he worked hard, even getting close to Peter Parker's Aunt May.
On the last day of his first week working there, you picked him up early to take him to get his final treatment.
May walked him outside. "So after this, you'll be in remission?" she asked.
"I sure hope so," he said, grinning. "I've had more than enough chemicals pumped through my body. If it hasn't killed it all yet, I don't know what will."
"Oh," she laughed, waving her hand.
"Hey, babe," you said, leaning on the front of your car.
"Beautiful," he greeted, and you bent down to kiss him on the lips. He grabbed your hands and you helped him up. May folded the wheelchair for you. "Thank you, May. You really, uh, don't need to do that."
"Nonsense," she said. You opened the trunk for her to put it in. "It's the least I can do." She shut the door herself and then wrapped Eddie up into a hug. "Congratulations, Eddie. I am so happy for you."
"Thanks," he said.
She let him go and smiled at you. You waved bye and, after helping Eddie ease his body into the passenger side, you got in the driver's seat.
Eddie sighed. "I miss my bike."
You smiled. "Well, after today, you can get your strength back up, and then we'll start taking the bike again."
"Can't wait." He shut his eyes and smiled, turning his face towards the window.
//
You pushed Eddie's wheelchair up to the eighth floor. He was telling you a story about something that he heard at work. When the elevator came to a stop and the doors opened, two large guards stood tall.
"Uh-" Eddie started.
"Mr. Li has requested that you remain in the basement today," one of them said, and they both squeezed into the elevator.
"He's... not receiving treatment on the cancer patient floor today?" you asked, confused.
"No." The hit BASEMENT.
"Uh - okay." Eddie looked up at both of them; they flanked him on either one of his sides. "He - he never mentioned that we'd be moving." No answer. "Oh... 'kay?"
You reached over and grabbed Eddie's shoulder, showing him that you were scared. He clumsily grabbed your hand, too. His grip was strong and confident as always; he was trying to remind you that you were safe with him.
It took a long time to get to the basement, and when you did, it didn't look any different from any of the other floors.
One of the guards nudged you out of the way. He took Eddie's wheelchair and Eddie turned around, slightly angry. "Hey man, that's my wife-"
"We need to get moving, Mr. Brock," he interrupted.
"Yeah, I get that," Eddie said. "But you can't just-"
"I-It's okay," you said. You stepped to the side and leaned in to kiss him. Pressing your lips to the corner of Eddie's mouth, you said, "I love you. I'll be waiting here, okay?"
"Okay," he said.
The two guards started to push him down the hall. Eddie turned around in his chair to look at you.
"I love you," he shouted over his shoulder.
You just waved, feeling the knots get tighter and tighter in your stomach as he disappeared.
//
You were standing next to an aquarium. Inside of it were a few saltwater fish. It was quiet in the room, besides the blare of the heating vent.
Then you heard footsteps.
You looked down the hallway.
"Oh, Mr. Li," you said. You checked your watch. "Is Eddie finished? I-"
"Mr. Brock is nearly done," he said. "We decided to give him a little something extra to make him stronger."
"Oh?" Your eyebrows pulled together. "D-Did he need another dose? A stronger one?"
"Something like that," he said.
Just then, a scream ripped through the air - and it was unmistakably Eddie's.
Your blood went cold and then you were running right towards the sound of it, right down the hallway.
Mr. Li blocked you with his arm. He didn't budge as your body weight slammed against him. He pushed you back and glared at you with glowing white eyes that made your heart fall all the way through the floor.
"I suggest you let us do what needs to be done, Mrs. Brock," he said.
"What are you doing to him?" you asked, voice hard.
"We didn't ask for payment for his treatment. All we asked was for him to do a minor experiment for us." Eddie screamed again, and your eyes darted to the hallway. It was killing you that you weren't there. "We will wait together and see if he survives it."
Your mouth gaped and you shook your head. Tears filled your eyes and you drew your hand back, punching Martin right in the mouth. His head flew backwards upon impact, and you ran down the long, long, long hallway.
Suddenly, swirls of black surrounded you. You felt the grip of a hand on the back of your neck and you yelped, choking out Eddie's name as you were slammed against the hard, white concrete of the wall. You felt your lip bust and your eye blacken; and Mr. Li just tossed you away from it. You rolled back down the way you came, then landed on your side.
"This would be easier for everyone if you just didn't struggle," he said.
But you weren't just going to give up. Your body slowly tried to lift itself back up on your feet.
Li was there already, gripping your throat. His clothes were white now, his skin dark blue.
"Just be still and wait until we're finished-" He hissed through clenched teeth-
A roar erupted through the hospital and the entire basement shook as the wall crumbled with the weight of someone crashing through it.
Li turned around. He laughed, almost triumphantly, and then the creature saw him. Saw what he was doing.
You knew what it was. Who it was.
It was Venom, but he was different. Where there was once black, there was white. The spider on his chest was opposite of what it used to be, too. It was the opposite of the symbiote you used to know.
"Venom?" you rasped.
And he came charging towards Li, mouth open, teeth showing, fist drawing back-
Li was knocked away from you and you were left to fall forward on the ground. You caught yourself on your palm and held your throat with your other hand. As your lungs struggled to catch up, you witnessed Venom and Mister Negative fight against one another.
"This was not the plan! Obey me, Eddie Brock. We gave you life-"
Venom picked up Mister Negative and threw him threw another wall. Then he turned to you.
"Venom?" you asked.
"WE NEED TO GO." He grabbed your arm.
"Venom-"
"NO. I AM NOT VENOM."
You swallowed. "Where's Eddie?"
The figure looked at you, then transformed. When it was Eddie again, you sighed out of relief.
"Eddie, wha-"
There was a shift in the rubble where Mister Negative had been.
"We have to go," he said. Eddie took off, dragging you behind him. You struggled to keep up. "I'm going to find a new way out of here." He turned three corners. There were footsteps behind you. He pushed you inside of a dark hospital room and ducked in. You both stayed still in the darkness behind the door as the footsteps passed. Eddie was breathing heavily. "How bad did he hurt you?"
"I'm okay," you whispered. "Remember, I can fight ugly."
He grinned, only for a second. "Yeah, I know." He looked at his hands.
"What?" you hissed.
"It's just... weird. Feeling this inside of me."
"He said it wasn't Venom," you said. "If it's not Venom, then who else can you match with? I thought-"
"I'll explain later," Eddie said. "But for now... I am so sorry. I am so sorry. For all of this."
"Eddie, I don't understand-"
"I'm sorry," he breathed. He took your hand and you both ran out of the room. "I'm-"
Turning a corner, you slammed to a stop. Mister Negative was right in front of you, three armed guards behind him.
