Ch. 27: Dine In

A few days later in the abandoned warehouse, Luz was training with Eda. Today was in hand to hand combat, mainly so Luz could develop her own fighting style other than just amateur brawling or wildly attacking. She also has an audience watching as Willow and Gus sat on some crates at the side. Eda was a skilled fighter in most techniques, so there were many she could do in order to help Luz find her own style.

"Come Luz, square your hips!" Eda shouted, dodging a punch and kneeing Luz in the chest!

Luz fell to the ground.

"Okay... I don't think mix martial arts are my kind of thing." Luz said, holding her chest.

"Okay, let's try something else." Eda said, "Hmm, you're pretty fast and agile, why don't you try using that?"

"And what do I do with it?" Luz asked as she slowly got up.

"Hit and run tactics I guess, that's your best bet." Eda said.

"How about you try and dodge my attacks?" Eda suggested, "Use that weird... tingle... thing."

"I call it my Spider Sense." Luz said, "We've been over this."

"That's a dumb name." Eda said blankly.

"I kind of like it." Gus said.

"Why call it a spider sense though?" Willow asked.

"Well, I got bit by a spider to get these powers, so it just kind of makes sense." Luz said, "I mean... what else do I call it? It doesn't match up with the rest of my powers, so I figured I might as well try and make it match."

"Moving on, let's see what you can do with that sixth sense." Eda said.

Eda charged and Luz used her spider sense to dodge the attack.

A kick, Luz sways.

A punch, Luz ducks.

A tackle, Luz leaps over.

'It's almost like my body is on autopilot.' Luz thought.

Eda turned and threw a punch at Luz, but she dodged it and jumped in the air, delivering a kick to Eda's head.

"OOOOOH!" Gus and Willow let out.

"Nice hit but that had to hurt." Willow comments.

Eda smirked.

"Not bad kid."

"Thanks. It was like my body had a mind of its own." Luz said.

"Okay, then what about this!"

Eda threw a grenade at Luz, who shot a web and launched it back at Eda. Eda avoided the explosion and charged at Luz.

'Let's see if your spider sense can handle multiple threats at once!' Eda thought, attacking Luz once more while preparing another grenade.

This time, a flash grenade. This blinded Luz, which Eda thought gave her an advantage... it did not. Her body still dodged Eda's attack, doing a perfect splits as Eda, Gus, and Willow gasped in shock.

'What the ever loving fuck?!' They all thought.

Still blinded, Luz dodged Eda's latest attack, and threw a kick that sent Eda into the wall with a loud thud.

"UGH!" Eda grutned as she slides to the ground. "Fuck, I haven't been hit that hard since I was hit with a truck."

Eda picks herself up, feeling at least one rib broken.

"Okay, I think we've done enough training." Eda said.

"Good because I cannot see." Luz said, blinking her dilated eyes.

"We'll hope you." Willow said, walking to Luz with Gus.

"How long does this last?" Gus asked Eda.

"About 20 minutes." Eda said.

"Great, what am I suppose to do in that time?" Luz asked sarcastically.

"Take a nap, maybe learn brail." Gus joked with a grin.

Even without her sight, she was able to shoot a web that covered Gus' mouth.

"Mmm?!" Gus let out.

"You kind of deserved that." Willow said with a chuckle.

"Yeah. Save that for an open mic night....which I may and may not do in the future." Eda said as a joke but she did give herself an idea for more business on certain night.

It would make money. She did like money.

"Can we participate?" Willow asked.

"It would come out of your pay if it's bad but yes." Eda answered.

"Anyway, I need a drink... and feeling in my back... so let's head to a small restaurant I like that I know the owner of before heading back to the city."

"So free lunch?" Luz asked.

"Yes, free lunch. Plus some high grade painkillers." Eda said, rubbing her back.

Eda grabbed her keys.

"Come on, my back isn't too fucked up to drive." Eda said to them.

"You're gonna milk that for a while, aren't you?" Luz asked.

"Oh, totally." Eda said.

Gus couldn't quip at this, so he just rolled his eyes as they followed Eda to her car and got in so she could drive them to lunch. They arrived and Luz saw the sign "Morton's Dine in".

"Morton's Dine In? I think I've been here before." Willow said.

"Mmm hmm." Gus muffled before the webbing was ripped from his mouth. "OW!"

"Yeah, your mom used to take you here when you were younger." Eda said.

"We did?" Luz asked.

"You don't remember but don't worry. Some of his cooking will help you remember those good times." Eda said as she looked at Luz.

"Hey, Morton, your favorite customer is here!" Eda said.

"I thought Lilith went on a diet." Morton said.

"... Okay that's actually just mean." Eda said

"Aren't you used to that, E?" Morton asked.

"Yes but that one just crossed a line. I'm genuinely hurt from that." Eda said with a hand in her chest.

"Well, I'm sorry if I did but you can't exactly blame me since Lilith always paid up front." Morton said

"Hey, I always pay... eventually." Eda said.

"Like now?" Morton asked her.

"...You take a check?" Eda asked.

"Ahahahaha!" Luz, Willow, and Gus laughed.

Morton then saw Luz and thought he was seeing things. He hasn't seen her in a long time.

"As I live and breathe, it's Little Mess Mouth!" Morton said with a smile.

"Who?" Luz asked, confused.

"You! I almost didn't recognize you." Morton said to Luz.

"Little Mess Mouth?" Gus asked, looking at Luz.

"Don't look at me, I haven't been her in close to 9 years." Luz said.

"Oh yeah! I almost forgot that!" Eda said, feeling happy again as she turned to Gus and Willow. "Luz was the messiest eater growing up! No matter what she had, she and anyone around her would end up looking like abstract art!"

Luz blushed at that.

'I didn't think anyone but mom, dad, and Eda knew about that!' Luz thought.

"I even have the picture of the first time she ate here!" Morton said, reaching below the counter and pulling out a picture frame of a 5 year old Luz, "I always made sure she had a piece of cake after dinner."

"And she rubbed it all over her face every time." Eda said with a chuckle.

"Hahahahahaha." Willow and Gus chuckled as well.

"Can we just eat and stop embarrassing me?" Luz asked with a blush.

"Yeah, yeah." Eda said, "What, don't like a trip down memory lane?"

"No I just don't want to be embarrassed before I eat." Luz said.

The gang sat down.

"I'll be back with some menus." Morton said to them.

"This is... nice actually." Luz said, "It's a calm day with nothing going on."

"Don't jinx it, kid." Eda said, twirling her hair a bit. "Just relax and enjoy the peace."

"That's something I haven't gotten to do in a while."

'And maybe with two friends helping out, I can enjoy this more.' Luz thought with a small grin

Luz looked around, remembering a bit of this place, and noticed the TV on the wall. Her face dropped.

"Eda, look."

Eda looked at the TV and saw the headline.

Mass Destruction at the Hospital, two dead, seven injured

This was followed with images of a giant hole in the hospital wall. Eda's face dropped as well at seeing this. Shortly after that, there was a video of... lizard... human... hybrid... thing, running across lower Manhattan before diving into the harbor.

"That's not normal, even by New York standards." Eda said.

"No. It's not." Luz said, listening closely to the news broadcast.

That's when Luz realized something.

"Amity's there." Luz said.

"Shit." Eda said, "Come on, Kids, we'll come back here later. Morton, we're leaving, there's an emergency!"

Eda took out her wallet and slammed a few hundred dollars on the counter.

"That should cover for my past transactions." Eda said, "Let's go kids!"

"Wait, why do you have that much money in your wallet?" Luz asked, "I thought you were broke."

"Kid, we can talk about the millions I have in the bank later." Eda said, "Move!"

"Millions?! Then why are you such a penny pincher?!" Luz asked as they left.

"Later!" Eda shouted as Morton came back for the money.

'And just like that, E is my favorite customer again.' Morton thought.
