The Office
For the next week the two of us went down to the little room every afternoon. We had started looking threw the boxes and organizing them. While it wouldn't seem fun to most people, we were having a blast. We hung up some old Christmas lights to give the illusion of brightness, but were still using the flashlights for anything specific. We had finished about half the room by the start of the second week, and with our constant visiting, it was a lot less dusty.
On this particular day Robbie was playing around with a plastic skeleton, while I was tossing out old newspapers.
"Come play with me Marvin" Robbie said in his best skeleton voice, kinda a high pitched whine while he rolled his r's.
The two of us started laughing as I grabbed the skeleton's hand, starting to dance. I kept the movement simple as I hoped not to bumped into anything. I was not taken into consideration the big crack of thunder. The sound echoed and I made a slight misstep that caused me to fall backwards into the wall. "Are you alright?" Robbie ran over.
"Yeah I'm fine" I stood up, using the wall for support. That's when I heard another suprsing sound, a brick moving. I looked up at Robbie and now both of us were smiling. He walked over and we started cleaning away the dust and cobwebs and found the secret door and the engraving above it.
"Sapientia animo veritatis est" Robbie read allowed. "Do you know what that means?"
"Hold on" I copied down the words on one of the old newspapers with a marker I had from labeling boxed and started to translate. "Wisdom is the spirit of truth".
"How did you do that?" he asked looking for an English translation that he had missed.
I laughed "I thought you said taking Latin was a wast of time." Robbie rolled his eyes then pulled me threw the small door.
Once passed the brick wall we were in a dark tunnel with a high ceiling. We walked down the hallway and stopped at a large wooden door. "There's something weird going on" I said as I opened it.
Waiting behind it was a small office. The top half of the walls were white and cream stripes while the lower half were a dark wood. The curtains were gold and red and completely drawn leaving the only light to come from the lamps. To the left was a bust of someone famous and a shelf that was left empty. To the right is what I can only describe as a full length office organizer. Large black legal volumes rested above a collection of binders and fancy pens. A set of wooden drawers with polished silver handles sat below a bulletin bored with handwritten notes and typed memos.
The crowning piece of the room was a large wooden desk that was the same cheery black as the other wooden fixtures with elegant carvings along the side. I walked closer to the brilliantly organized desk and sat down in one of the two chairs. "What is this place anyway?" I turn back to the door waiting for Robbie but he was gone and the heavy wooden door was now an easy to open glass pane door that led into a house, not an underground tunnel.
