The Key

I had always loved spending the summers on my friend's family's farm. Robbie had been my best friend since grade school.  That morning I was looking out the window from the guest room.

"You know the farm's a lot better outside." Robbie said as he brought me back to reality.

I laughed slightly and looked over. "I didn't know you were up yet." I got down from the windowsill and walked over to my friend. "I didn't want to wake you up."

"That's sweet but come on" he said getting out of bed. "It's going to rain so we should head down to the lake now." I gave a nod and happily gathered my bag before heading out.

Robbie's aunt and uncle owned a huge chunk of property, everything from the barn to the west to a large part of the woods to the east. The southern border was to a main road and the  northern one was the fencing around the mine and had a deep shadow from the mountain.  We ran across the the farm and to the woods. I followed him down the warn dirt path and down to our favorite part of the property.

The cleaning was about half a kilomiter with most of the space taken up by a large love.  The water was a crystal blue and clear enough to see the stones that lined the bottom. We moved to the opposite sides of the tree cover and each changed into swim trunks.

When I was done I walked back to the lake. Robbie was already waiting, as he sat on the bank with his feet in the water.  "Come on, the water's great."

I laughed and walked over sitting down next to him. "So what is it?" I knew we only went to the lake when we needed to talk.

Robbie smiled and fixed the thick, black framed glasses on his face. "I don't know, we just hardly get to talk during the year."

"Yeah, because you're in all smart science classes" I pushed him lightly so he fell away from me before he sat back up.

"And what about your seven art classes?" Robbie asked before pushing me back. We laugh and as I was sitting up I caught a glint from under the water.

"First, I only had five classes. Second, I think there's something shinny in the water." I pointed to where I saw the glittering and Robbie nodded, he jumped into the water and swam over. He took a big breath before diving under. I jumped in but didn't dive, waiting for the other to come up. After a few seconds he did, but was shaking his head.

"I saw it, but it's stuck."

"I'll try" I took a breath and dived in. My eyes were open and it burned a bit but I needed to see what I was doing. I found the small object and reached for it. It took several good tugs before I was able to pull it lose. I swam back up taking a long deep breath of clean air when I reserfaced.

"What is it?" Robbie asked excitedly as he swam closer.

I made my way to a spot I could stand in before I opened my hand to show off a silver key on a rusty chain. "Have you seen this before?"

Robbie shook his head. "No idea, but maybe we could look around the house to see if it fits anywhere."

I nodded happily and swam back to the edge of the lake and got out. "You going to keep swimming or are we going to go exploring?"

"Just five more minutes" Robbie said but just as he spoke thunder could be heard coming from a few kilometers away. My friend sighed and swam to shore. "Lunch should be done soon anways. My uncle's making grilled cheese."
