The Door
We changed and ran back to the farm house. I had shoved the key in my bag. I was hopping that Robbie and I could find the lock it opened without needing to ask. At the table we tried to keep the conversation off of our business. I was able to do so naturally, but Robbie was trying too hard and I was sure that his uncle was starting to take notice.
While his smile was kind I could tell he knew something was off. Somehow I almost felt worse from that silent look, then if he had said something, anything. Robbie was getting fidgety and I was starting to feel that sane. I finished my sandwich as quickly as possible after that.
When Robbie and I had finished our lunch, we got up and made our way back to the guest room. The room was well sized with two twin beds, two desks, a large bookcases and circle window. There was still an open space on the floor where an old circle rug sat.
"I've been to this house every summer I can remember, and I can't remember any locks." Robbie said as he sighed. "I mean maybe it's to a box somewhere..." he trailed off as he lied on the bed.
"No, I'm almost positive it's a door key" I was sitting on my bed. "And I'm sure the door is in this house."
"Well there's no door in this house I haven't seen."
Sighed and got up. The guest room was on the first floor, and like all other floors in the houe, they were made of wood. I started to pace the floor. I walked over the rug a few times, then stopped in the middle of it. "I know this place doesn't have an attic, but dose it have a basement?"
Robbie seemed to put the pieces together and sat up. He helped me roll up the rug and there we found the trap door with a key hole built in. I walked over and put the key in. It worked perfectly. He and I opened the doors and started down the ladder into a dark and dusty room. The room was wide and long, but just tall enough to stand in without crouching.
We started looking around at what was in the place. The room was full of mazes of boxes. The farther we traveled from the latter the darker it got. We needed flashlights, so we devised to go back up."
"I'll get the flashlights," Robbie offered, dusting the cobwebs from his cloths. "You get the snacks?" I nodded and started for the door, but he grabbed my wrist to stop me. "You should probably brush of the evidence." He laughed before doing just that. Then he ruffled my hair getting the dust out. He was smiling in a way only he could. "Meet back in ten?" I smiled back and went to get snacks.
