twenty-two: threat
"Seems like they made up."
"Should we wake them up?"
"They look adorable though."
"We have to."
"Let me take a quick picture."
"For what?"
"Their wedding, duh."
"They could just be cuddling as friends."
"Oh trust me, that's not how friends cuddle."
"Jeongguk's eyes glow when he looks at him."
"What! Seriously?"
"Guys, that's not important right now. Let's just wake them up."
"Fine, I'll do it. Jeongguk? Your highness? Taehyung?"
Jeongguk groaned, hearing some kind of distant buzz in his ears that made him stir. He tightened his grip around Taehyung and snuggled closer. Taehyung also began to shift. He moved to lay on his side so that the two got even closer than before.
"These two... My Elvador– Guys!"
Taehyung and Jeongguk both groaned but they still couldn't completely hear the voice. Their eyes opened slowly and they both got a glimpse at each other's face.
"'Morning, cutie," Taehyung said in his raspy morning-voice.
"Your majesty," Jeongguk closed his eyes and replied, neither noticing the bodies hovering around them.
"You're so pretty, you know that?" Taehyung whispered, moving some pieces of hair away from Jeongguk's forehead.
"And you're the biggest flirt, you know that?" Jeongguk replied with a smile. The two would've kept going if it weren't for the other elves in the room clearing their throat.
Taehyung and Jeongguk's eyes opened wide as they looked up to see Jimin, Hoseok and Yoongi standing there with their arms crossed. The two immediately pulled away from each other and sat up. Jeongguk managed to stumble his way out of the bed and stand up straight without falling.
"Uh, hello," Jeongguk said, combing his fingers through his hair to tame his probably messy-do.
"Yeah, hi," Jimin replied with a grin.
"What you– um, what are you guys here for?" Taehyung asked, pretending as if they didn't see what was happening.
Yoongi sucked in a breath through his teeth. "We're being kicked out."
"What? We still have one more day," Jeongguk said, hands dropping from his head.
"We're not being kicked out," Hoseok said and gave a light shove to his boyfriend. "They think it's best for us to leave as your safety may be in danger. The attack may have been an ambush, it is still under investigation."
Taehyung nodded as he understood what was going on. It wasn't his safety they were worried about, it was all of theirs after seeing Taehyung's capability.
"I'll get ready," Taehyung said and the three nodded and left the room. Jeongguk noticed the shift in Taehyung's mood and stayed back.
"What's wrong?" Jeongguk asked taking a seat on the bed.
Taehyung brought his knees up and hugged them close to his chest. "I'm just scared what everyone's reaction will be."
"You saved lives, Tae. You're a hero. Don't worry, okay?" Jeongguk said. "Now get ready, I'll come back and pick you up, then we can go down together, okay?" he said and Taehyung nodded. Jeongguk got up and leaned down to place a kiss on the top of Taehyung's head before leaving the room.
Everyone regrouped in the main hall but only the king was present for their departure. There were a lot more guards than before but Taehyung pretended to not notice. Everyone was silent as they boarded the vehicle to go back home. Eventually, Namjoon called in Taehyung to a private room to discuss some things.
"I think it's only fair if I tell you everything that is going on. To start, as soon as we get home, we will be having a council meeting regarding your current position as king," Namjoon broke the news without sugarcoating anything. Taehyung wasn't surprised, the council still had its backwards way of thinking from when Taewon was around.
"They want to dethrone me because I saved people?" Taehyung argued, not even sounding upset at this point.
"You said you knew the consequences. You harbour dark magic, your highness. Elves didn't see a saviour as you flew up, they saw Zorock."
"I thought I was their last resort. That I'd strengthen the shield."
Namjoon sighed. "You are, but they're afraid you'll end up destroying the shield in the end. That'll you become a bigger threat than Zorock."
"So, what do you think is going to happen?"
"This could go either way. They might recognize that you can control your curse and believe in you, or they could lock you up in a dungeon and prepare for another war when the shield comes down."
Taehyung sighed and nodded. He thanked Namjoon for being honest and they both left the room without ay further discussion. He found Jeongguk waiting at door, bitting his nail anxiously. Namjoon left them alone in the hallway and continued walking.
"Hey," Taehyung said getting close to the the elf leaning against the wall.
"What happened? What did Namjoon say?" Jeongguk asked letting his fingernails go but kept his hand in a fist at his chest.
"That I might be dethroned," Taehyung said as if it was no big deal.
"What?" Jeongguk exclaimed, wondering why Taehyung was being so calm.
Taehyung grabbed his hand and played with his fingers loosely. "But I won't let that happen. Don't worry," he said and laid a little kiss on Jeongguk's pointer finger. Jeongguk bit his lip and nodded slowly, but still couldn't help but worry. He knew how the council members were, there was no way they were going to let this slide.
"Don't lose hope, right?" Taehyung asked and cupped the side of the younger's cheek with his spare hand.
"Right," Jeongguk repeated. Taehyung's smile spread to his own lips and his worries washed away in an instant. Taehyung smiled wider and leaned in just a little closer. Jeongguk's eyes closed shut and waited, but all he heard was a chuckle.
"What are you doing?" Taehyung asked with a few more laughs slipping. Jeongguk's eyes opened again and he just felt dumb. He opened his mouth to say something but no wordswere found. He just huffed, pulled his hand away harshly and shoved him back.
"Jeongguk!" Taehyung yelled walking after him. He grabbed his shoulder and turned him around so that he faced him. Jeongguk's cheeks were bright red, his lips slightly pouted and with the unmistakable look of annoyance.
"What?" Jeongguk asked, throwing a glare. Taehyung smiled and gave him a quick peck, not giving Jeongguk time to even realize. Jeongguk's features softened and when he was about to open his mouth again, Taehyung sneaked in another peck.
"You-" Jeongguk started but Taehyung pressed his lips against the younger's again, but this timed didn't pull away. Jeongguk forgot what he was about to say and melted into the kiss. He shut his eyes and pulled the older in closer by his neck.
"Get a room!" the heard a voice yell, sounding very much like Jin but the two would never know for sure as they didn't bother to check, too busy with each other. They did decide to listen to the elf's advice as they walked together into the meeting room that Namjoon and Taehyung had their talk in. Taehyung pulled away for a second to close the door and make sure to lock it but dove right back into Jeongguk's very much addictive lips.
Taehyung backed Jeongguk to the large table in the middle of the room so that he had something to lean agaisnt. Jeongguk pulled away first to catch his breath but Taehyung wasn't done. He began to trail little butterfly kisses down his jaw and to his neck.
"Tae, we should stop," Jeongguk said but his actions said otherwise as he tilted his head and laced fingers through Taehyung's hair to keep him in place.
Taehyung stopped a spot where Jeongguk's neck would certainly be exposed and began to nip at it. He bit and licked, repeating his actions when he heard Jeongguk attempting to hold in any possible sounds. He only stopped when he finally heard the quiet moan Jeongguk released, feeling satisfied with his work. Taehyung pulled back from his neck and planted a kiss on Jeongguk's nose that scrunched immediately.
"You're right. We should stop. This is a time to be serious," Taehyung said in the most serious not-serious tone.
Jeongguk shook his head lightly with a smile. "Mhm, very serious," he said. They both giggled at each other before connecting their lips again.
"Agh, why did it have to happen now? I can't even enjoy some time with my boyfriend," Taehyung groaned.
"Boyfriend?" Jeongguk echoed with a raised brow. "Don't think we ever came to those terms."
Taehyung rolled his eyes. "Seriously?"
"Seriously," Jeongguk replied with a grin.
"Alright," Taehyung said and stepped back. He cleared his throat and stretched out his hand. "Jeongguk Jeon, will you be my boyfriend?"
Jeongguk laughed and grabbed his hand, pulling the elf back closer to him. "Of course."
Taehyung smiled but it dropped when he noticed the shift in Jeongguk's. "Did I miss something?" Taehyung asked, wondering if he should've been a little more romantic about it or brought a rose like his uncle suggested.
"No, not that, It's just- I've never been in a relationship before. Even with Namjoon and honestly just in general, I'm terrible at expressing my feelings. I get upset easily, I cuss out, I'm brash, I always resort to using my magic or my fists to get things done and I'm literally the opposite of prince charming. I just don't want to mess this up. Just- Just give me another chance if I do something wrong, I swear I'll do my best to be a good boyfriend," Jeongguk explained.
"Jeongguk," Taehyung breathed out. He grabbed a hold of the younger's face and squished his cheeks together. "Whoever said I wanted a Prince Charming? I'd much rather have my knight in shinning armour. God, who let you be this cute?"
Jeongguk rolled his eyes and placed his hand on top of Taehyung's, pulling them away just until he could be able to speak normally. "You're the only elf in this entire universe who thinks I'm cute," Jeongguk said.
"Then I'm the only one who gets to see your cuteness," Taehyung said and let go of one side of his face to tuck back a piece of hair that fell in front of his face then slid his hand right back into place. "Lucky me."
"You know, I never thought this would happen," Jeongguk said.
"Us? Well, I was infatuated with you when we first met at the bar. How did I get you to fall for me is the mystery here."
Jeongguk chuckled. "Hm, I don't know, the little things I guess."
"Like?"
"Mm, like, as much as I hate to admit it, your flirtatious behaviour, then how easily you connect with others, how good you are with kids, your ambition to be a good king for your people, your selflessness. Everything. I could just keep going."
"Well we've got the next three hours before we get home," Taehyung said and dropped his hands to wrap them around Jeongguk's waist. "And I'd very much like something to boost my ego before I have to face the council."
"You're doing this on purpose, aren't you?"
"Maybe. Maybe I love seeing you blushing. Or maybe I just really like hearing you talk about me."
"I hate you."
"Start listing, babe."
"My Elvador. Alright, then. Let's see, I love your..."

They finally landed back home and no one greeted them with excitement as expected. The sky was dull and clouded, a storm building up. It was a good thing they arrived before it.
Taehyung and Namjoon were immediately led to the council room and Taehyung had to meet the elves he so dreaded to see. They took their seats around the table and waited for someone to speak.
"Did you know, Sir Namjoon, that when that monster said he lifted the curse he was actually lying?" one of them spoke up.
Namjoon took in a deep breath, doing his best to keep his face calm. "No, Lord Hwan."
"Perhaps you did, your highness?" Lord Hwan asked, turning his attention Taehyung.
"I became aware not too long ago," Taehyung replied truthfully. He made sure not to even bat an eye, he wasn't about to show weakness to these people. He was not about to let them have what they wanted.
"Then you must be also aware it is the same curse that turned your uncle into... that thing."
Taehyung remained silent but stared hard at the speaker.
"What guarantee do we have that our King won't fall into the same fate?"
"You don't," Taehyung answered without missing a beat. "But what other choice do you have, hmm? What? You want to lock me up? Let the shield fall apart and face the wrath of Zorock?"
Now everyone went silent. They'd all been believing they'd giving the crown to some foolish immature king who believed in and followed anything they say blindly. The elf they were all looking back at was different. His lips were in a scowl and eyes hooded with a piercing gaze.
"All I request is for you all to let me continue with my duty. I'll strengthen the shield as promised," Taehyung said.
"We can no longer trust you with the shield. You'll kill the golden rose," another of them said.
"We don't want to exile you, your highness, but we can't take any chances. We're respectfully asking for you to stay in the palace and in you chamber while we look for an alternative. We do not want you to grow your power anymore, so we will put a halt to your training as well. We voted on this unanimously."
Taehyung scoffed. "Then why have this meeting? To inform me? Does the King of this nation have no say in this? You know what? Fine. Find your alternative. Don't worry, when you come back to me I won't be petty and not help," he said and got up from his seat.
"I will also not be under house– palace-arrest," Taehyung said heading for the door, knowing very well how disrespectful it was to leave the table just like that.
"King Taehyung, we cannot allow t–" Lord Hwan began to say but Taehyung raised his hand and instantly, a black flame formed shutting him up.
He turned his head back and raised a brow but no one dared to even breathe. He closed his hand and the flame disappeared. Pleased with his fright, Taehyung walked through the door and ordered the guards not to follow him.
They were probably all enraged and talking furiously about what to do with him as soon as he left or maybe even yelling at Namjoon for letting it all happen but Taehyung didn't care. All they could do is talk. He went straight for the stable and got out Mage, throwing on the potion to disable the sensors, not caring about the weather conditions.
He didn't even need to call out his name as he came to the edge since Zorock was already waiting for him at their usual meeting spot. Word really does travel fast. Zorock grinned wide as Taehyung came to an abrupt stop just millimetres away from the shield.
"Angry, nephew?" he asked, cocking his head arrogantly.
Taehyung chest heaved up and down. He was angry. Angry that Zorock was right. He thought he could handle them, but in the end he couldn't do it. Just a few months ago he would've been in front of TV, with his headphones on and screaming at the screen while his fingers aggressively worked the controller. He would've been going to college and gay bars and just fooling around like a lot of his early-20s friends. But there he is, a King with too much power and even bigger responsibilities that were just getting out his hand. He wanted to do the right thing, he wanted to be a good king, he really did.
"Hey, look at me. Taehyung, fucking look at me," Zorock said getting closer. Taehyung blinked rapidly and looked up.
"It's going to be okay, you hear me?" he said and placed his hand on the shield. Taehyung nodded along to his words.
Zorock sighed. "I told you this would happen, didn't I? They don't understand us, Taehyung. They never will. Take this shield down, join me. We'll show them all what they decided to shove to the side. We want the same thing, Taehyung."
"No," Taehyung said shaking his head. "No we do not. You and I have very opposite goals here."
"Yeah? Then why did you come here, Taehyung? Hmm? Deep down, you want this too!"
"No!" Taehyung yelled, his voice echoing through the forest frightening the creatures that laid around peacefully. He continued. "I came here because this is all your fault! It's your fault that they don't believe me. Because you set the perfect example for them. I even doubted myself, wondered if I'd become like you."
"Oh don't you dare pin this on me. The only one to blame here is those who treated me as a monster."
"And you became exactly that. You let them win, you coward!"
"Don't you fucking call me that!" Zorock yelled, his hand balling up in a fist and hitting against the shield harshly just as a loud lightning struck. They both breathed heavily, just glaring at each other until they heard it. They heard the crack and both their eyes flew to where Zorock hit.
"What is that?" Taehyung ask as he saw the very tiny crack that they wouldn't have even noticed at first glance.
Zorock chuckled but his smile kept growing until he began to laugh like maniac. "The shield's weakening. You only have a few weeks, maybe even days. No more hiding, Taehyung." He stopped laughing and wicked smile rose to his lip. He tapped at the crack then looked at Taehyung. "As I've said before, Taehyung. Same boat, and when you realize, I'll be open to welcome you unlike them," he said as his final words before vanishing once again with the snap of a finger.
The rain began to pour. Taehyung screamed. He screamed at the top of his lungs until he was satisfied. Then when he stopped hearing his echoes, he heard something other than the rain hitting the ground and his heavy pants. The flapping of wings, way too many wings, and even before turning around, he already knew who it could be.
"Your highness," the general said as his and his army came to a stop behind him. Almost as if they were unsure who the enemy here was. The general asked, "Are you alright? We recognized an alert at the base."
Taehyung's mind wasn't clear enough to think of excuses. It wasn't going to look bad no matter what he did. "Yes. I'll go back to the the palace," Taehyung said. The general looked like he wanted to question him further, but let it go as his eyes caught the crack in the shield. Taehyung didn't refuse when the general sent on off the elves to escort him back. All he could think about was the chaos that was about to erupt at the place he'd finally started to think of as home.
