thirty-one: earth

"If I remember correctly," Jimin said as they stopped in front of a building that looked quite expensive. "I followed him here."

"You followed him all the way Downtown? We lived in Ajax!" Taehyung asked and Jimin nodded.

"It's my duty to protect you, wouldn't you have questioned everything if you saw someone that looked exactly like you?"

Taehyung sighed, remembering how he reacted when Jeongguk broke it to him. He could've died in his attempt to fly.

"Do you know his name?" Yoongi asked, shoving his hands into his sweater pockets that he's been loving since their dress change which was very much needed to avoid the attention. They also wore face covering which was a little suspicious but Hoseok's mask wouldn't last forever. They cant afford getting caught in the rain either. The two worlds must be collide.

"Taehyung Kim, which is why I was even more stressed. He lives with his foster family," Jimin said.

"Guys."

"What if he moved?" Taehyung asked.

"Guys."

"Well, let's hope there's someone who knows him here," Jimin replied.

"Guys."

"What if there isn't?"

"Guys!" Yoongi yelled louder and finally grabbed both their attention. "I don't know about you, but the man walking towards us looks a lot like our King."

Jimin and Taehyung turn their heads to where Yoongi was looking and surely the man was there, walking with a few paper bags and a pair of sunglasses perched on his nose. His hair was an electric blue walking with a confident stride. It may not be noticeable at first glance but with a better look, this man was surely a carbon copy of Taehyung.

"Oh my god," Taehyung muttered. "What do we do?"

"Let's knock him out," Jimin suggested first and they both threw a look at him.

"Should we just go talk?" Taehyung asked, getting more nervous as the distance between them decreased.

"He can't see your face," Yoongi said.

"I'll keep my covering on the entire time," Taehyung said.

Jimin hummed. "I'll take mine off, we look too suspicious," he said removing his disguise.

"Okay, let's do this," Taehyung said and took in a deep breath. It's not everyday you meet someone who looks exactly and owns the same name. Or maybe it's a typical tuesday, Taehyung hasn't been on Earth for so long.

The three began walking together and stopped directly in front of the man, startling him. Earth Taehyung came to an abrupt halt. The three elves were stuck in place as they didn't exactly think it all through. Earth Taehyung showed them a polite small and tried to walk around them but the three, all together, quickly blocked him again.

"Uh, can I help you?" Earth Taehyung asked as kindly as possible.

"Yes," Jimin said. The man waited for further explanation but the elves stood there silent.

Earth Taehyung sighed and lifted his glasses up to sit on-top his head. "Sorry, I'm a little busy–"

"Leef too!" Yoongi casted and waved his hands in front Earth Taehyung's face . The man's eyes shut and he fell right in Yoongi's hands.

"Yoongi!" Jimin hissed, helping him catch him.

"What! It was your idea," Yoongi yelled and Jimin rolled his eyes.

Taehyung paced around their hotel room with a hand on chin. "We kidnapped him!" he yelled pointing at the man tied to a chair with the complementary towels and shower curtain. They had placed the sunglasses back on and used their magic to make him walk with them to the hotel. There was a very obvious wobble but they could pass it off as a drunk no one would dare to question.

"Wake him up, we're wasting time," Jimin said and Yoongi nodded, removing his spell. The man slowly batted his eyes open, adjusting himself to light. Then he looked around the room and the elves looked back. He took in a deep breath and immediately began to yell at the top of his lungs for help.

Jimin quickly lunged for him and slapped a hand over his mouth. "Sh, sh, we won't hurt you!" Jimin said and Earth Taehyung quieted down his voice.

"Good, good," Jimin trailed and moved his hand away slowly. Earth Taehyung remained quiet for a second before he started screaming again. Jimin whined and covered his mouth again.

"Ow!" Jimin yelled jumping back and bringing his hand to his chest. "He bit me!" Jimin pointed a finger at the man that continued to yell.

Taehyung groaned, not knowing how much more of this he could take when there a man's life at stake. He threw away his mask and hat and stepped in front of Earth Taehyung, who's screams instantly faded away.

"What the fuck. What the actual fuck. Oh my fucking god. Are you... are you my brother?" Earth Taehyung asked, staring at Taehyung.

"I'll explain later, I promise, but do you know this man?" Taehyung asked, showing him a picture of Jeongguk he had brought.

"No, wait– b-but y-you look just like me– a twin?"

"Please," Taehyung pleaded. "This is very urgent, just look."

Earth Taehyung gulped and looked at the picture, blinking his eyes rapidly trying to get a better sight. He shook his head.

"Think, please."

"Sorry, no," Earth Taehyung said and Taehyung sighed. He turned the picture back to him and walked away, trying to think of the next step.

"Wait!"

"I'll explain later, give me a m–"

"No, I've seen him somewhere."

Taehyung immediately turned around and showed him the picture again. "Yeah?" he asked eagerly.

"I think he served me my drink once. Uh, a Tim Hortons," Earth Taehyung said and Taehyung nodded along. The two's paths had crossed after all. That had to be some kind of sign.

"Do you know which one?"

"Yeah. I don't go to that one too often which is why I didn't recognize him, but I can get it on Google Maps."

Taehyung nodded and grabbed the man's phone they took away just in case. He opened the app and had Earth Taehyung spell it out in case he played smart and alerted someone.

"But, who are you?" Earth Taehyung asked and Taehyung put down the phone.

"I'm sorry, Taehyung," the elf said and casted the spell again, making the man fall asleep again.

"Let's go, Jimin. Yoongi, could you stay with him? Earth you might be out there too," Taehyung requested and Yoongi nodded.

They got to the coffee shop as quick as they could. Taehyung didn't realize how he's gotten so used to Mage and portals. Once they were inside, as Taehyung expected, Earth Jeongguk wasn't anywhere in sight. He knew it wouldn't be that easy, he could only pray it wasn't because of what it they were trying to avoid.

"Good morning, what can I get you today?" the cashier asked with a short smile.

"Sorry, is Jeongguk here?" Jimin asked, not wanting to use the picture instead in case that was too odd.

"Oh, it's not his shift yet. He should be here in about two hours," the man said and Taehyung let out a sigh of relief.

"Thank you," Jimin offered a smile.

"When did you last see him?" Taehyung asked, just wanting to put his mind at ease a little more.

"Yesterday," he said but his tone had gotten more low, as if he was suspecting them of something. Taehyung still had his face mask on after all. "Will that be all?"

Taehyung decided to order something for them both to avoid being warned to Jeongguk as some creepy men and since they'll be there for the next two hours.

About an hour and a half in, both their wrist calls began buzzing with an alert from Yoongi saying how he keeps waking up and he's afraid if he uses a spell one more time, his human brain might become boggled from the magic. Then followed by a message saying Earth Taehyung bit him when he tried to put a gag on him to stop the screams. Finally, with a video of him kicking around trying to break free.

"I can go," Jimin offered and even though it might've been better for him to stay instead of Taehyung, the elf knew his mind wouldn't stop racing wondering if Earth Jeongguk came.

"Mhm, I'll keep you updated," Taehyung said waving a buy to Jimin.

Taehyung sighed, wondering how much longer he had to wait. He wished he could call across universes and check how his Jeongguk was doing. If he had woken up or asked for him. If he was upset Taehyung had left him or approved of his decision to save his Earth counterpart. If he had question about what went on and what happened to him. Or if he didn't care about it at all and just wanted a hug.

His thoughts were put at a pause when he saw the man he was thinking of coming from the back and taking position at one of the empty registers. Unlike Earth Taehyung, Earth Jeongguk looked exactly like the one on Elvador. Except the eyes. His eyes were brown but Taehyung knew it wasn't due to the colour they were so dull.

Taehyung didn't know what exactly to do. He couldn't just go up to him. Even if he did, what could he possibly say? Hey, you might die soon, I'm here to prevent that! He'd look like a nutcase. Not to mention if it was a terminal medical condition.

He proceeded with the only possible choice, he waited it out. He didn't take his eyes off of the man. It was a little funny. Even though he looked like Jeongguk, Taehyung didn't feel the flutter in his heart he would with his lover whenever he saw him.

Hours passed and Taehyung kept updating the two other elves. Apparently, according to Jimin, Earth Taehyung needs just as much attention as the King. Jimin decided to just tell him about everything and show them their magic since they'll be using a memory shifter spell on him before they return and the man started laughing hysterically before concluding it was a dream. Maybe they were the same after all.

When Taehyung noticed Jeongguk waving to his coworkers, he knew that'd be the end of his shift. Taehyung quickly got off his seat and went to the back door that he'd went out to find while they were waiting. His plan so far was to just follow the younger.

Jeongguk first stopped by a convenience store and came out with a bag of contents, Taehyung could only make out the roughy outline of two bottle and other unknown items. He stopped to talk to a homeless man, sitting down beside him not caring if his clothes had gotten dirty. They talked for so long, laughing to the point that Jeongguk lunged himself on the man. Before he left, he pulled out a y'all bottle of water and a two boxes of sandwiches for him, with a little bit of cash tucked between them. The homeless man tipped his hat as Jeongguk left with a smile.

Next, Jeongguk stopped by a toy store and looked at something through the window for a long while. He pulled out his wallet, most likely counting his bills, then put it back in his pocket before continuing down his path. Taehyung took a glance at what they were showcasing and in the spotlight was a fake snow machine.

The man walked around more and somewhere in the middle, pulled out a lollipop. Taehyung's stomach grumbled, remembering he'd only had a drink and donut since the day started. He finally stopped at a shabby looking apartment and entered.

Taehyung began to panic at that moment. He'd been following him this entire time, hoping maybe he could save him from danger, like a car accident or choking or a fight between him and local thugs or even money sharks. He can't just follow him inside his home. Taehyung just had to tell him the truth.

Instead of the elevators, Jeongguk took the stairs. Taehyung did his best to be quiet in his steps even though he'd be confronting him soon. He was a few flights behind him. He was expecting the metal thing to be creamy and rusty but his footsteps were as loud as feather. It felt like they went on forever but Taehyung wasn't about to give up. Eventually, Jeongguk went through a door and it also happened to be the very last one.

It had a warning saying it was off limits but the door was held open with a piece of broken wood, leaving a small creak. Taehyung opened the door wide enough for him to enter, slowly to not make a sound and made sure the little gap was still there. The place was a bit messy, barrels and boxes here and there.

Jeongguk's back faced him as the man looked at the view from the top. Taehyung quickly walked over to a barrel and sat down, hiding himself from his view. So much for telling him the truth.

He observed through a little hole. The man took out a bottle of beer and set down the bag on the ground. He leaned against the parapet taking a swig here and there. His head suddenly lifted to the sky and he began to yell at the top of his lungs, making Taehyung nearly jump. Jeongguk stopped and breathed heavily, letting his head fall back down with a groan. With his drink still in his hand, he pulled himself up and climbed to stand on top of the parapet. He quickly found balance as if he's done it a million times.

Taehyung watched it all and he realized what was happening. He was going to jump. The elf was instantly on his feet.

"No! Wait!" he yelled as he began to run in his direction. Jeongguk turned around confused and a bit scared. He lost his footing and began to fall before Taehyung could reach him.

"Shit," Taehyung cursed as he jumped right after him.

Earth Jeongguk's eyes were wide, his hands and legs were above him. Taehyung couldn't tell if it was still the confusion or the fear. No, definitely the confusion. This man right there was fearless.

Taehyung shot his arms at him and Jeongguk finally shut his eyes. He opened them again when he realized he wasn't falling and instead floating. Jeongguk didn't speak a word as Taehyung came to his height in the air and carefully put his arm underneath him to carry him back up.

Taehyung set him back down at the rooftop and Jeongguk hadn't blinked or taken his eyes off the elf once.

"Oh my god," Jeongguk muttered before he passed out. Taehyung quickly caught him and sat him down against the parapet. Well, so much for first-impressions.
