five: rekindled friendship
Namjoon led him down long hallways before finally stopping in front of a large door. The door was decorated in intricate patterns and beautiful engravings, little jewels embedded in them.
"This was once your parents' chamber," Namjoon explained. He placed his hand on the handle. It glowed bright before Namjoon was able to open it. They walked in together, Taehyung taking in bits of the rooms one by one. It was an empty room except for the large painting on the wall and candles all over.
Taehyung walked closer, slowly taking in all the details of his parents' features. His father looked confident in his pose, his smile warming his rough looking demeanour. His mother was absolutely stunning, sparkling brighter than any piece of jewelry on her neck. He grazed his hand over the caption. King Jaewon, Queen Mira, & Prince Taehyung. He then looked at the little one in the middle.
"That's me?" Taehyung questioned. He looked to be about three or four, but Taehyung definitely saw his defining features on him.
Namjoon nodded. "This was their most prized possession. Their favorite painting by an artist very near and dear to them."
Taehyung smiled, looking at the entire painting as one again. They looked like a very happy family. The perfect family. He wondered what it would've been like if he had never been sent to Earth. Would he had to see through his parent's death? Would he have grown up with a rage to avenge his parents? Taehyung felt bad for not being able to remember, since from how everyone has described these two wonderful elves to him, their son should be missing them dearly.
"Shall we greet them now, your majesty?" Namjoon asked, snapping the prince out of his thoughts.
"Yes," Taehyung answered simply. Namjoon walked over to one of the candles, turning a small hook right under. A opening in the wall opened, revealing a yellow portal. The two stepped in, Namjoon typed on the screen and in a flash, the portal closed and opened again.
Taehyung was greeted by the fresh scents of nature, mixed with different unfamiliar flower fragrances, all smelling wonderful. A beautiful garden with two large stones in the middle, Taehyung instantly knew it was their graves. Taehyung tightened his grip on the flowers he had picked earlier as he walked up to it. Namjoon stayed by the portal, letting Taehyung have a moment alone.
The prince laid the flowers down. He bowed and then took a seat on the ground.
"Well, hello," Taehyung started awkwardly. He laughed lightly at himself. "Ah, I really don't know what to say. I heard you were wonderful people. I really wish I remembered." He weaved his hand through the grass, just keeping quiet for a moment.
"I don't know if I can live up to your name, but I will surely try. I will make you proud, I know I'm not ready but I can be a good King. Mom and dad, back on Earth, they raised me very well. I hope you'd forgive me, but I think they've been punished enough. I'm planning on bringing them back here, they deserve that much..."
Taehyung read over their gravestones, smiling reading their honourable titles. "I don't know why– actually I do, but, I really wish I could see both of you. Just once."
He stayed their for some more time, and probably would've spent the entire day there if he could. Namjoon approached the elf, placing his hand on his shoulder. Taehyung looked up, which shocked the older a bit.
"Your majesty..." Namjoon called, but couldn't find the right words. He reached in his pocket, pulling out a new handkerchief and passing it to the prince. Taehyung looked at it confused, but finally felt his wet cheeks. He reached up to confirm that he was in fact spilling tears without realizing it. He took the handkerchief, patting the tears away.
"Sorry," Taehyung mumbled, as he began crying more, the piece of cloth not being enough. He got up and looked away from the graves. "I don't even know why I'm crying, sorry." He tried to laugh to lighten the mood, but that didn't quite work. Namjoon sighed, he pulled the younger close, Taehyung giving in and laying his head on the elf's shoulder. Namjoon patted his back, letting him cry all he wanted.
It took a while before Taehyung finally stopped, and when he pulled away, he saw the wet blotch he left behind on the other's clothing. "Sorry," he apologized again.
Namjoon shook his head. "It's alright. It's okay and normal to cry, it's better than holding it all in."
Taehyung nodded. "Even though I don't remember anything?"
"Well, your memories haven't been erased, just hidden. It's still in you. And the emotions that carry with are there too."
The elf didn't like this. He wanted his memories back. He wanted to stop feeling so emotional yet emotionless at the same time. "Is there a way to reverse the spell?"
"I've been looking into it. Don't worry, I will find one."
Taehyung thanked him, Namjoon really was a great help throughout this entire process. He didn't know what he did to deserve such a kind elf by his side, and not only his, he's been there for generations along with Jimin. Taehyung wanted to ask about how they are exactly immortal, learn more about him, but he didn't know if it was appropriate yet, but his curiosity has always got the best of him.
"Your aunt has returned from her trip. Shall we go see her now?" Namjoon questioned.
Taehyung smiled. "Lead the way."
•—•—•
"Aunt Linda, that's enough," Taehyung pleaded, mouth stuffed with all sorts of treats.
"Oh, please, just one more!" the elven lady said, bringing another cookie-like treat to him.
Taehyung chewed as fast as he could before taking in the cookie, eating that quickly as well. "That was the last!"
His aunt smiled, setting the treat she had already picked up back down. As soon as she saw Taehyung, she ran to him an engulfed him in a big hug. Jin kept commenting on how he'd never been cared for that much as she fed the prince her best sweet filled recipes.
"I really wish I could've come sooner, no one in this palace could beat my cooking! But of course, I had to visit some allies in the North." She paused to sigh, but then her lips spread out into a big smile. "But those days are finally over for me. Our King has arrived!"
"Indeed he has. I was worried I'd have to become king one day," Jin said, finally being able to take a treat for himself as he wasn't allowed to by his mother before.
"I bet you'd make a wonderful king, cousin Seokjin," Taehyung said.
Jin furrowed his brow. "Why are you speaking like that?"
"Jeongguk said I talk too much like a lazy human."
"Jeongguk says a lot of things, and 107 percent of it is crap."
The two elves shared a laugh at that, Linda joining in.
"I see you and Jeongguk are still inseparable," she said. "Seokjin never hung out with you too, only with girls! Such a playboy he was!"
"Mom!" Jin yelled in embarrassment.
"Inseparable?" Taehyung repeated.
His aunt nodded. "I never saw one without the other. Don't you remember?"
While Jin explained to his mother how Taehyung didn't have any past memory of his life on Elvador, Taehyung thought about why in the world Jeongguk didn't bring that up. Is it possible that he didn't remember as well? Then it hit Taehyung, how he knew that he used to play around with his gift, or the lullaby he said his mother sang to both of them. The elf did in fact remember.
And so, as soon as Taehyung said his farewell to his aunt who was feeling tired after the long journey, he ran up to Leonava's room. He swung the door open, startling the only elf in there, and luckily for him, it was Jeongguk.
"Jeez, what if I dropped too much of this, huh?" Jeongguk scolded after the doors were closed.
"What're are you doing?" Taehyung questioned as he approached him.
"Working on a potion Prince Jin asked help with," Jeongguk replied. "Where is he?"
"He's walking his mother back to her chamber," Taehyung said.
"Ah, is Auntie Linda back? I should go visit her."
Taehyung hummed. "You seem to be very close with everyone in the palace."
"Of course," Jeongguk said, still very much concentrated on the potion. "I grew up in here, after all."
"So you knew me before I left."
Jeongguk went quiet, his body pausing for a split second. Taehyung repeated his question as Jeongguk continued making the potion. Then came in an answer, but not from Jeongguk.
"Did you just find out?"
Both elves turned their heads to the door to see Jimin walking in. With a smile, he approached the two.
"Sorry, just overheard. Isn't that why big bro sent you, cause you'd recognize him the best?"
Jeongguk looked at Jimin, then at Taehyung, who seemed to be trying to scan the younger's face, and then back at the potion. "I guess," he muttered.
Jimin laughed recalling all the things the two did together. "You two were the cutest. Two peas in a pod. Jeongguk used to follow you around everywhere! Like a little duckling, ahh so adorable. And you! Your highness would make a big fuss if Jeongguk wasn't with you during meals or activities. You'd both sneak out of each other chambers late at night and do random shit, then we'd always end up finding you in like the kitchen or something all cuddled up. Never knew how you passed the guar–"
Jeongguk cut of Jimin by clearing his throat. "I better go give this to Prince Jin, he said it was urgent. I will make my leave now, your majesty," Before either one of the other could say a word, Jeongguk bowed, took the bottle and walked out, leaving them a little lost at words.
"He never told you?" Jimin asked, still looking at the door the younger walked through.
Taehyung, also looking at the door, shook his head. "Nope."
"Must have his reasons."
And Taehyung was determined to find out what they were.
Then doors opened once again, Namjoon becoming a little surprised by the two elves looking at him as if they were waiting for him to walk in.
"Your majesty. Jimin," he greeted, getting closer. "Are you two alright?"
Jimin hummed, throwing an arm around Taehyung. "Great!"
"Jimin," Namjoon said sternly. He'd warned the younger many times to stop acting so casually with the Prince, at least not in the eyes of others.
"Whaaat! We're like best friends, it's too hard to suddenly start treating him like this."
"Platonic soulmates," Taehyung corrected.
Jimin looked at the younger, nodded, then back at Namjoon. "Platonic soulmates."
Namjoon could only sigh. "I should've been sent, why in the world did the late King send you to raise his child?"
"Hey!" Jimin yelled. "What's wrong with me?"
"You flirt around, you're lazy, you have no manners, you're just too immature!"
"Haha, I get that a lot too," Taehyung said, missing the point. He placed an arm around Jimin's waist. "Don't worry, Jiminie, you're perfect."
Namjoon sighed again. Jimin smiled back at Taehyung and waved his brows at his brother. Namjoon thought that it was enough of that conversation and moved on. The took seats around the table and Namjoon began to explain his failed findings for Taehyung's memory recovery spell.
"If your memories hadn't been hidden, you could've at least practiced your powers with Jimin," Namjoon said, a little frustrated at the situation.
Jimin shook his head. "King Jaewon specifically told me to raise him as any other mundane child. You know him, he doesn't always have an explanation for thins, but everything he does is with good intention."
"He could've at least consulted with me."
Jimin rested his hand on his brother, giving him a short smile because that's all he could do.
"Maybe my father didn't want me to return," Taehyung spoke quietly after some time.
"Possibly, but it would've been to protect you from him. He told me he'd bring you back when time was right."
Taehyung rested his head in his hand, confused yet again.
"Unless–" Jimin started, but was stopped hearing the doors open. They turned their gaze to see Jeongguk back. The elf bowed and walked in.
"That's not the proper sitting posture, your majesty," he said first.
Taehyung looked at him for a few seconds before getting up, grabbing his wrist and taking him out of the room. Jeongguk didn't even get time to react as he was rushed to a deserted hallway.
"Prince Taehyung!" Jeongguk yelled, releasing himself from the other's grip. He rubbed his wrist looked around to check for any guards or elves. "What the hell?"
"Why didn't you tell me we were once so close?" Taehyung asked frowning.
Jeongguk looked back. He took in a deep breath and let it out. "Because it doesn't matter. You don't remember."
"But you remember."
"So?"
"So! You could've helped me remember."
Jeongguk rolled his eyes. "What's the point?"
Taehyung crossed his arms. Then his face instantly changed. Jeongguk become confused seeing the older look he just realized something.
"You know, you didn't really have to go through all that flirting to figure out it was me. I'm pretty easy to recognize from my younger self."
Jeongguk glared at him. "We are not to speak of that again! And what if it wasn't you? I didn't have a take back potion with me."
"Anyways, don't tell me..." he started with a smile. "That we were in love!"
"What!?" Jeongguk screamed, his eyes nearly popping out.
"Yeah! Like, puppy love or something! And you just couldn't help yourself when you saw me again! Or oooh! Maybe a promise? Did I promise to marry you?!"
Jeongguk felt like hitting his head against a wall. He huffed a puff of air and said, "no, nothing like that. And even if it were, what makes you think I'd hold on to some meaningless promise like that?"
"Oh really?" Taehyung asked rhetorically. He smirked, and boy did Jeongguk have a bad feeling about whatever had gotten in the prince's mind now. Taehyung began approaching the younger, slow little steps. Everytime Taehyung got closer, Jeongguk took a step back. That went on until Jeongguk reached his limit and stumbled against the window seat, falling into a seat. Taehyung leaned down, as close as he could.
"Any old feelings resurfacing, Ggukie?" Taehyung whispered. Jeongguk stood still, his face expressionless. Taehyung wanted to say more, but he couldn't. As in, he physically couldn't. Jeongguk had frozen his entire body. Jeongguk moved over, and did his best not to laugh too much at Taehyung in that weird pose and blinking furiously.
"No, your majesty," he said and unfroze him. The smile stayed on his lips.
Taehyung sighed and also took a seat. "Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because..." Jeongguk trailed, looking down.
"Because...?"
Jeongguk looked at Taehyung. His lips pressed into a thin line. "You haven't changed a bit," Jeongguk said.
"Thanks?"
He continued. "But I have. I assure you, the Taehyung I knew would've never wanted to be friends with the elf I am right now."
"Oh come on," Taehyung said, hitting his shoulder with the other's. "I'm sure you haven't changed that much."
Jeongguk shook his head. "After you left, everything changed. You were the last thing keeping my sanity."
Taehyung rose a brow, and Jeongguk knew he'd have to spill everything and there was no escaping it.
"My mother was a royal portraitist and had already passed away when I was young. The Queen was close to her and raised me as her own since I could remember. Zorock killed her. My father shortly passed after as well in battle, because of Zorock. Then your father gave up his life to save the kingdom from Zorock. I didn't even know when you left! Even Jimin. But both because of Zorock. Everyone I cared for left! I had no one, except Namjoon. I felt so alone, I was only six, some dark shit for a six year old."
Taehyung became speechless. He wanted to say comforting his words, but he couldn't put them into sentences. "I'm sorry," was all he could say.
"It's okay. I realized I had to be more independent that day. I forced myself too. I focused on growing my gift, becoming stronger." His fist clenched recalling all the memories. "I promised to get revenge for my family, I will put an end to Zorock. He took away everything from me and he doesn't even know it."
The older scooted a little closer. "I can't assure you anything, but I will do whatever I can to fight against him with you. You aren't the only one in this battle, alright? I'm here now."
Jeongguk unclenched his fist, the warm smile from Taehyung lips spreading to his own.
"And hey! I don't know about the old Taehyung, but Taehyung now would definitely be friends with you."
Jeongguk chuckled. "Oh yeah?"
The older nodded. "Mhm! So what do you say, we may not become as close as we were, but it's a start. So, friends?"
Jeongguk took a few seconds to just process everything. "Friends," he repeated more firmly.
Taehyung smiled wider. He threw an arm around Jeongguk, startling him a little but the elf let him.
"So bestie," Taehyung began. "You got a crush on Namjoon, don't-cha?"
Jeongguk's eyes widened. "W-what? How'd you know?"
The Prince let out a small giggle. "I didn't," he stretched. "But now I do. I mean, I did have my hunch 'cause you weren't falling in love with me and like, hello??? I'm Taehyung Ben– Kim. And I noticed all the heart eyes. "
"What! Heart eyes?? And I wouldn't call it a crush! More like... admiration..."
"Sure. But don't worry, my friend. It is now my duty to get you two together! I'm the best wingman in town, trust me."
Jeongguk shook his head. "Yeahhh, I'd rather you not do anything, thanks."
Taehyung pouted, beginning to whine. Jeongguk kept refusing, but by the end, both the elves were laughing their heads off at all of Taehyung's plans to win Namjoon's heart. One thing was for sure though. Even thought all of his ideas were shit and just pure crack, Jeongguk was glad to have Taehyung around again. Maybe they could really have what they had once. A friendship so pure and strong, that many envied them. Neither of those young elves noticed though, they were always lost in their own little world. As they were now, sitting by the window, not even noticing the Sun set and the darkness of night rise.

"Unless what, Jimin?" Namjoon asked.
Jimin bit his lip. "Unless he knows something he shouldn't."
Namjoon furrowed his brows. "You don't mean... the King wouldn't hide that from us! When Prince Taehyung was born he said–"
"We don't know the truth, but there's no way. I've known Taehyung his entire life, it's impossible."
Namjoon nodded. "Still, if so, it's too risky. I must find a strong enough potion or spell before his coronation is set."
