eight: secrets

"Prince Taehyung Kim of Saphia..." Dramatic pause. "Has returned!" a guard announced, his voice amplifying and sounding through the entire palace front. Everyone from the village had gathered up to see alleged return of the lost prince. Everyone had been in a stir ever since the post came up.

Taehyung gulped, feeling frozen. He felt a little nudge at his elbow, making him turn his head to the side to see Jeongguk give him a reassuring smile. Taehyung returned the smile, breathed in and out one more time then opened the doors, exposing him to the world.

The crowd was silent other than the murmurs here and there. Taehyung cleared his throat and stepped up to the edge. Namjoon had given him some kind of voice booster potion to make him sound more professional and loud.

"Hello, people of Saphia. I would like to properly introduce myself to you. I am Taehyung Kim, son of Jaewon and Mira Kim. I hope you will all graciously accept my arrival," he said as he had been taught, and bowed. The crowed was still  silent, looking at him as if he was an alien. He continued on with the speech, the potion really helped him not stutter.

"...And I promise, for as long as I live, I will protect Saphia and it's future, like my father had once before!" Taehyung finally ended. It was quiet for another moment before cheers erupted.

This is what the people had been waiting for ever since the unfortunate death of the King Jaewon. A light of hope. A saviour. Especially when danger's still out there. The people needed this now more than ever with the shield weakening. No one even wanted to let the question of if it could be the actual descendant or not come into their mind.

Taehyung smiled and waved back at the little children jumping up and down. He didn't expect this to be so simple. The guard announced him again, meaning it was time for Taehyung to head back inside. Just as he did, the villagers all took a bow. At that very moment, Taehyung felt a sense of responsibility wash through him. This was his people, his kingdom, and it was his responsibility to make sure nothing happened to it. It was as if realization just hit him then as he took in the seriousness of it all.

He went back inside, and stood at the door after it closed. He looked at everyone in the room, his eyes searching for a raven-haired elf. He walked up to him and gripped onto his shoulders.

"I'm a fucking prince!" he whispered, although there was no use in that as it still was heard by literally everyone.

Jeongguk stifled back a laugh, the first in a while. "Language, your royal highness. And yes, did you just find out?"

Taehyung stepped back but kept his hands on the other. "Yes Gguk but I'm like... a prince! An actual prince!"

"Yes," Jeongguk said again, slowly this time as if he was speaking to a child. "A prince. Heir to the throne. Throne," he stretched each word.

"Oh fuck I can't do this."

Jeongguk looked back at the elf and saw that Taehyung wasn't kidding around, he saw the fear in his eyes. He looked behind Taehyung, giving a look to Hoseok.

"Okay everyone out," Hoseok commanded with a smile. The helper elves and guards looked at Namjoon and when they received the nod of approval, they headed out the doors, not forgetting to bow to the Princes even though one of them was currently in the middle of a existential crisis.

"Hey hey, listen to me okay?" Jeongguk spoke softly.

Taehyung began taking in shorter breaths, panting. He shook his head. "Jeongguk, I'm the wrong person. You've got the wrong person. I can't-can't do this. I'll only put us in jeopardy. I don't even have a gift o-or some kind of strength or power. I'm just useless."

"Yes you can, Prince Taehyung. I believe in you, we believe in you. You have the power to save all of us inside of you. Don't worry, okay?" Jeongguk tried. He was never too good when it came down to these kinds of situations.

"B-but, what if I don't have it?"

Jeongguk looked into Taehyung eyes. He wasn't about to lie to him, but the that possibility was just not acceptable.

"You do," Namjoon finally came in.

Taehyung looked at him, wanting to question in him more, but the two loud know and the door suddenly bursting open with a worried guard stopped him. The royal guards had no permission to barge into any room that deemed to be safe without higher commands, except when it was an absolute emergency.

"What's wrong?" Jin was the first to ask.

"The shield," the guard said then showed them a kind of globe that mimicked their land and the shield. "The shield is being attacked."

Everyone's eyes widened. Namjoon hurried the guard and toggled with the globe. He shook his head.

"No, no they're not attacking. They're... trying to get our attention," Namjoon said as he saw a view of the part of the shield that was trying to be broken through. It was just a bunch of creatures pounding at it aggressively as if it was their way of knocking on someone's door.

Everyone approached the globe except for Taehyung and Jeongguk. Taehyung became even more nervous after that news and froze in place, gripping on Jeongguk tightly as Jeongguk held his elbows to make sure Taehyung wouldn't lose his balance.

"What could they want?" Yoongi asked, watching the attackers.

"What else? The prince. I was expecting this due to the announcement of his return, but I didn't know it'd be so soon," Namjoon put out.

"Doesn't that mean he has the reckless things on basically standby all around the shield?" Jimin asked.

Namjoon nodded. "They must be waiting for the shield to lose all its strength."

"What should we do?" the guard asked, waiting for his command.

"Summon the general. Prepare a small army, they aren't looking for a fight, but we can never be sure," Namjoon said. He looked back at Taehyung who was slightly shaking. "You will be coming too."

"What?" Jeongguk snapped at that last part. "No he's not."

Namjoon looked at Jeongguk. It was the first time he'd spoken to Namjoon since that day, but the situation right now didn't put their problems in a higher place.

"He's a soon to be king. He must," Namjoon said, his tone revealing he didn't want this himself either.

Jeongguk's icy blue eyes glowed as he looked at Taehyung and spoke his next words. "He is not seeing that monster. You can't give that thing what he wants. He wants you to bring the prince to him! His intentions are obviously bad!"

Namjoon sighed. He gets that Jeongguk's had that fear that Taehyung would leave him again, even if the elf would never admit to it, but no one really had a choice in this nor the time to argue over it.

"I'll go," Taehyung cut in. He looked at Jeongguk. "You said you believed I could be a king. I should start playing the part and eventually I'll believe too."

Jeongguk's eyes dimmed down. He bit the insides of his cheeks to keep himself going at it. There was nothing he could do now as the prince himself is on board.

"Fine, but I'm coming."

"You don't have any experience on the battlefield," Hoseok said, worried.

"Neither does he!"

"He can come. Let's not waste anymore time. Both of you, got get armed. Jeongguk, escort him with the guards down to the stable," Namjoon quickly said then opened the teleporter, leaving with the guard.

"You don't have to do this, not yet," Jeongguk tried to convince him one last time.

Taehyung stepped back and straightened. "Yes I do. Let's go."

The two headed out along with everyone in the room. Taehyung got geared up into some stable armour that looked similar to the one Jeongguk endorsed, just a slight but more embellished.

Down at the stable, Taehyung was expecting to ride some horses like the olden times back on Earth. What he wasn't expecting was full out pegasi. They were all individually stunning, but Taehyung couldn't even stop and appreciate that as all that ran through his mind was what was to come.

They got themselves on, Taehyung with some help as he hadn't even been on a horse before, let alone a pegasus. He was instructed to touch his pegasus, Mage, on her head which would connect them. Whatever direction Taehyung thought to go, she would listen.

Taehyung was stationed right next to the general, Namjoon and Jeongguk right behind him, a small army of what seemed to be seventy or so elves behind them. The general shouted out some commands then everyone took off. They followed the lead of the general as they made way to the edge of the safe zone.

The trip didn't take too long as the pegasi were speeding their way through, coming from years of training and practice for these specific tasks. As soon as they showed themselves to the attackers, the goblin like creatures stopped, wicked grins forming to their faces.

One of them shouted out something as they landed to the ground. The pegasi walked slowly, stopping about a metre away to not get too close to the edge.

Taehyung stared into the darkness of those creatures. He didn't feel fear, he felt as if he was used to it. He just kept looking at them, almost entranced.

The creature then made way in the shape of a half-circle. Then a black smoke tornado formed in front of all of them, and as the smoke dispersed, a man, with a skin so pale that Taehyung would've been convinced he's dead, revealed. His black robe matched his piercing black and hooded eyes, endorsed with deep dark circles, a jawline so sharp, cheekbones so high – he looked surreal.

If he wasn't aware of the situation, Taehyung would've thought he came right out an art piece, one that someone would fall in love with at a glance. Taehyung could only describe his aura and entrance as something out of a movie, maybe Maleficent, but he needed no fictional character to put a name tag. The elf prince knew this could only be the infamous Zorock.

A smirk formed to Zorock's lips as he scanned everyone that had come to greet him. His eyes landed on Namjoon lastly, his smirk dropping into a frown.

"Is this really necessary?" he asked, his voice deep and eerie, looking over all the soldier all ready to attack if even one wrong move was made.

Namjoon showed no emotion as he spoke, "I ask the very same question to you."

Zorock let out a short and bitter laugh. His eyes travelled to Taehyung. When their eyes met, Taehyung felt shivers run down his spine. He felt like he was slowly getting intoxicated the more the elf stared in, as if he was getting hypnotized.

"There you are. Come out, little troublemaker, let me see you properly," he said, his voice a little more soft now.

Little troublemaker... The words rung in Taehyung's head. He shut his eyes, feeling his head suddenly throbbing, those words still echoing.

He shook his head, snapping himself out of it. Taehyung raised his head high and without getting a confirmation from Namjoon like he would've, he communicated with Mage to step out of the General's shadow.

"How handsome you've grown. To be honest with you, I don't think there was any one more excited than me when I heard of your return. I'm sure you're happy to see me too," Zorock said, a playful smile on his lips.

Taehyung stared back, not uttering a word through his frowning lips. He killed innocent lives, including his parents. That's all that came to mind when he saw him. A murderer.

Zorock kissed his teeth. He threw one arm up and half shrugged, pretending as if he didn't know why he wasn't receiving such a warm welcome.

"Geez, control you excitement, nephew. I was your favourite uncle, wasn't I? What? Is it him now?" Zorock said, nodding his head over at Namjoon who wanted bang his head against something for having to listen to such a useless conversation.

The prince only continued to look, but now uncertainty began to show on his face. He felt that he was quiet for too long, felt like a coward.

Zorock floated up a little closer to get a better look at the young elf. "Don't tell me..." he started, then followed with a laugh. "You don't have your memories do you?"

Taehyung's excessive blinking gave the answer straight away.

Zorock chuckled. "My brother really is something." He looked at everyone this time. "You may all leave now. I need to talk to the prince privately."

"Not a chance," Jeongguk spoke for the first time, cutting off whatever the General was about to stay. He tried his best to stay calm and quiet and let the others deal with this, but as time went on, he just couldn't hold himself back.

There he was, the elf that took all his loved ones from him, standing there right to his face with a smile. Jeongguk always expected this moment to be a little different – something like freezing Zorock and shattering him into a million pieces.

"Oh goodness. Who is this fireball. No no, not fire. Those ice blue eyes... you're Junho's son, aren't you?" Zorock spoke without a stop. Then a fake frown formed at his lips as he remembered the said elf. "Oh, I'm so sorry, little elf."

Jeongguk's body steamed, he raised his hand in the air, balling up the strongest attack spell he had and shooting it straight at Zorock. The spikes of ice disappeared as they touched the shield putting a rippling effect at where it hit; no magic could leave or enter their protective shield. Zorock didn't even flinch, a sly smile resting on his lips.

"Feisty there, just like him. Maybe that's what brought his demise," he said, shrugging as if he wasn't taking any of this seriously. "Ah, you're distracting me." His eyes shot back to the prince, who was currently watching him in a newfound anger.

"5 minutes. That's all I ask."

Everyone remained quiet, thinking over it. Taehyung stepped up. "Fine."

"Your highness," Jeongguk started.

Taehyung shook his head. "I want to know what he has to say."

Zorock grinned wide, showing off his pearly white teeth. "Now that's a good elf." He looked back at the rest. "Some privacy, please?"

"We aren't leaving," the general spoke. "It is our duty to protect the Prince. Whatever you need to say, say it here with us."

Zorock rolled his eyes, his whole aura becoming darker. "You all are really testing my patience. You don't think I can break down this measly shield of yours if I wanted to?!"

The soldiers all put their arms in a defensive model, their hands glowing as they prepared to use their gifts as Zorock's voice raised. These elves were all handpicked and trained, not only for their physical abilities, but also for their skill.

Zorock shook his head with a short laugh. He raised an arm, pointing upwards with his long and slender pointer finger. The next second, he floated up with his black clouds following from the ground.

Taehyung looked at Namjoon, wanting the nod of approval. Namjoon looked up at Zorock then back Taehyung, hesitantly nodding. Taehyung flew up with Mage, getting to an eye to eye level with Zorock.

Taehyung kept quiet, wanting Zorock to speak first, and he did. "You really don't have your memories."

The younger elf didn't answer, knowing very well him having that fact could become a weakness of his.

"Don't want to answer me, huh? That's fine. But I already know. If you did remember, you wouldn't be standing inside that shield right now."

Taehyung lifted a brow. "What do you mean?"

"So he speaks!" Zorock exclaimed, clapping his hands together once, along with a wicked giggle that Taehyung never wanted to hear again. "Don't you get it? Why would my lovely brother erase your memories and hide you from the everyone unless you learned something you shouldn't have? Is that strange, nephew? Oh my dumb nephew."

"Stop it! Just get to the point!" Taehyung yelled, getting impatient with his little antics.

"Well to put it simply," he began, approaching closer for a dramatic effect. "I'm your father."

Taehyung's eyes widened. He began blinking rapidly. Sure, the first time someone says who you've thought was your father wasn't you father you might understand and move on with you life, and sure, someone then says your biological father is the king of another universe, could be processed after some time, but now that who he thought his biological father was is not actually him, it's getting to much to deal with.

Zorock looked back at him with the same expression as he did when he dropped the news before he bursted out into laughter. Taehyung could only blink more, confused.

"God! The look on your face!" the older elf said in between his laughs. "I'm kidding! It's a joke!"

Taehyung looked and him blankly then scoffed. "Haha, you made a fool out of me. I really am an idiot for believing I'd get some truth out of this." He signalled his pegasus to turn, ready to leave.

"Oh oh oh," Zorock sounded, making Taehyung turn around with an eye roll, he really could take this supposedly evil elf seriously anymore.

Zorock forced himself to stop laughing and smiling. "My apologies, your highness," he said slowly, no sincerity his words. "But there is a secret that your family is hiding from you, and when time comes, you'll learn. And then when you do, you'll come to me. I shall take my leave now."

Taehyung opened his mouth to question what he meant by that but Zorock just shook his head and pointed down. "Your army there is getting ready to draw blood. Don't fret, little one, we will meet again. But just remember, Prince Taehyung, I'm only trying to take back what was supposed to be mine."

With that, he exaggerated a bow and another large black cloud spun around him and his minions. The army was instantly alerted, half going up to the prince and the other closer to the creatures. The last thing Taehyung saw was the elf's mischievous grin before they all disappeared in thin air.

Taehyung now only began to realize that there was a lot more to being King of Elvador than he thought, and that there was just as many secrets behind that crown. The first he wanted to figure out was what he had known that he wasn't supposed to and why his father went to the extents of sending him to a whole other universe for it.
