Chapter Four: Peter
Peter's POV
I looked at the princess. She needed to know. Or at least she deserved to. Besides, she would find out eventually.
"I'm not Lord Fairborne anymore," I said looking at the ground. "My family's title got taken away."
She looked shocked, and I could see her trying to take it in.
"And," Lord Tweedle interrupted. "He's been the talk of the whole town, getting his title taken away because he stole an expensive necklace-"
"That's enough," I snapped.
I had led the sniveling man over here, and this was how he repaid me? Spilling all my secrets like they were water from a stream.
"Is it true?" Princess Ariadne whispered.
I stared at her, wanting to tell her it was a lie. I looked down once more. She wouldn't believe the truth. "I'm sorry Princess."
I turned around and left. This whole night was a complete disaster!
I weaved my way out of the terrible maze and found myself at the refreshments table once more. I started shoving some pastries into my bag for Julie, when a horn sounded - alerting all the men that the princess had been found.
I cursed under my breath.
"Lord Fairborne!" A high pitched voice chimed from behind me.
Oh no.
"Hello, Lady Layton," I responded and bowed.
"I've been looking everywhere for you," she said, batting her eyes.
I did my best not to roll mine.
There was a reason I had been avoiding her all night. How she managed to sneak up on me twice in one day was beyond me.
Sir Sneddon then rapped his cane on the ground and everyone began gathering near him - to where the prince had Princess Ariadne displayed at the front of the room for all to see.
It was too much.
I turned to leave, but Lady Layton caught my arm.
"You wouldn't leave me partnerless for the last dance, would you?"
I gave her my best fake smile. I still had to keep up appearances if I wanted to earn back a title. "Of course, my lady."
I escorted her to the floor, but another man hurried over to us, looking breathless.
"Lady Layton!" He said. "Could I have the pleasure of this dance?"
Before she could reply, I said. "Of course, my dear fellow. I have already danced with the wonderous Lady Layton tonight. And it would be a shame if you did not have the privilege as well."
She opened her mouth, about ready to complain, but the Lord whisked her off before she could.
I smiled. At least that went better than expected.
I then looked around once more. Princess Ariadne and Prince Wilson were laughing as he led her towards her place in the center of the room. She looked absolutely marvelous.
And now she has a perfect prince to match.
I turned to leave but looked back once more.
Why do you even come to these balls? I thought as I watched Princess Ariadne in the arms of her prince.
I shook my head. You nitwit. It's because of Ariadne. She's with someone else and you still can't take your eyes off of her.
Ever since I first met her, I knew she was something special; and despite what she says, it wasn't just because she offered me pie. Though the offer was very appealing to my 8-year-old mind.
I cursed myself for thinking she could ever want me; we were just friends in her eyes.
And if she ever did think of you as more than a friend then you totally blew it by what you said tonight.
I turned around and walked out the front doors that had seemed so inviting just hours before; now they seemed to mock me. I didn't mean to be rude to Ariadne, but after seeing her so happy with that Prince, I lost it. And it didn't help that Lady Layton kept pestering me to a point where I had to hide in the garden to get away from her.
I walked out into the cold, crisp air thinking of everything that had transpired in just a few short hours.
Now she knows.
I would never help that sniveling stick of a man again.
I kept walking down the dismal dirt road, hoping I would make it home before Julie got too worried. I smiled; Julie would ask question after question until she could imagine herself there with me through the night. This would've been Julie's first ball because the kingdom only lets women go after their fifteenth birthday unless of course, you are royalty. Julie would've loved every second of it: trying all the food, talking to anyone who would listen, and dancing to her heart's content.
I sighed and kicked a loose pebble, but it only went ahead a few inches. I grumbled and kicked it again, this time sending it flying down the road.
"I'm sorry Julie, it's all my fault," I whispered. "If I hadn't lost my title and our house then you wouldn't be sick inside of our puny cottage."
Then I heard a loud snap to my left. "Who's there?" I called, instinctively going to draw my sword, but it wasn't there. I hurriedly looked around, hoping I had imagined the noise, but the feeling that ran through me told me I hadn't.
"Who's there?" I called louder this time.
"No one of any consequence," a deep voice replied.
"Show yourself."
"If ye say so," he answered again as about 10 men stepped out of the trees, surrounding me.
Well this was definitely not my lucky day.
You've stuck it through! Wo ho!
I hope you've enjoyed it so far. I always love getting someone else's perspective. It's so much fun!
What did you think of Peter's perspective? Who do you like better - the Prince or Peter? Do you trust Green Eyes?
Don't forget to vote and comment!
And I'll be posting new chapters every Monday.
