Peter's POV
My arm throbbed, but I ignored it. I accepted the pain. I deserved it.
Julie can't even lift her arm by herself!
A bird squawked as a rock I threw whacked the tree in front of me.
Talking makes her cough.
Another rock chipped the tree.
I'm no closer to getting my title back.
A squirrel jumped off the tree as the third hit.
I finally tell her... And she loves someone else.
A loud bang echoed through the forest.
I've failed.
I let the last rock in my hand drop to the ground as my knees did as well. My breath was heavy as my heart sank at the reality of my life. Nothing was going right. Everything I had worked for was gone.
And everyone I loved was leaving.
What are you going to do about it?
The thought wouldn't leave me alone. I wasn't helpless. I didn't need to rely on others to solve my problems. I could do something about it.
I stood up, forming a plan as I rushed to my house. I had to leave. I had to fix everything. There had to be someone in Glendowin, or at least the 12th realm that could help me save at least one of the people in my life who I could not live without. I could not lose Ariadne and Julie.
I threw open the front door and ran into my room to grab a bag that I had hidden there in case I ever needed to leave quickly. There wasn't a better time than now.
"Where be ye goin?" Green Eyes asked, standing in Julie's doorway.
"Nowhere," I mumbled, annoyed that he hadn't left yet.
"Not by the looks of it."
I turned and glared at him, anger flaring. "It doesn't matter."
He held his hands up in surrender. "I don't mean to offend thee."
I scoffed and went into my room. I found the bag sitting in a corner, right where I had left it. I swung it over my shoulder and went to leave, only to find Green Eyes blocking my only exit.
"What do you want?" I growled. I need to hurry. I need to save Julie.
"I want to know what be goin' on. Runnin' away from ya problems won't help ya; especially while ye be angry."
"What would you know about it?" I asked pushing past him.
"Plenty," he said sadly.
"Well, I'm not running away from my problems," I spat. "I'm trying to fix them."
He looked at me confused and saddened, but didn't make a move to stop me. "I hope ye be doin' the right thing."
"Thanks," I said, surprised by his change in attitude. But I didn't stay to think about it.
"Ye not be sayin' goodbye to ya family?"
I stopped, but didn't look back. "They wouldn't understand. You can tell them for me."
"Peter-"
I shut the door behind me. I had to leave now before anyone could convince me otherwise. I strode down the dirt path that led to the forest and away from the small shack I had learned to call home and those whom I loved dearly. I felt a twinge of guilt from leaving my family without so much as a note, but I knew that they wouldn't have let me go otherwise. Besides, Julie was getting money from a few people in town whom she had won over with her sweet personality and although I hated him, I knew Green Eyes would protect them.
Besides, this was to help Julie. I felt so useless in this small town. I needed to find someone who could help my family more than I could.
* * *
The first three days of searching in the woods, I didn't come across anything useful. I felt as if I was running out of time. I needed to find help for Julie and I needed it now.
Finally, I saw a cottage up ahead on a little hill. I walked up to it. It was just in time too, I had run out of most of my food. All I had left was stale cakes.
"Hello young lad, what are you doing out in the middle of nowhere?" An old man asked me as I walked up to his cottage. He was poorly dressed except for a small red jewel of some kind that he wore on his finger. Probably a family heirloom.
"I was hoping you could help me, sir. I'm on my way to find a healer for my sister. You see, she is very sick and no one in our town knows how to help her. If you could point me in the right direction and perhaps give me some food then I would be most appreciative. I'd even be willing to work for it."
"You are a kind lad indeed. I knew it the second I saw you trudging up here. Selfless that man is, I said, selfless. And I was right."
"Thank you sir."
"Come in, don't just stand around there. Come in. I'll help you out."
I ducked through his small door, and when I stood straight again I was surprised. There were all sorts of animals and plants – dead and alive everywhere.
"Here's some food for you. Probably nothing like what your wife at home makes, but it will keep you going for some time."
I stiffened. "I'm not married."
"Oh? Well, I'll be, a strapping young lad like yourself isn't married?" He looked over me a minute. "Ah, but you've found one."
I nodded but didn't say anything as I stuffed the loaves of hard bread in my satchel and drank some of the soup he gave me.
"Does she not return your love?"
"I thought she did, but then..." I sighed. I wasn't good enough, that was it. Plain and simple.
"Another man came in her life, did he?" And he continued when I nodded. "Then I would suggest finding another young maiden. You deserve a maidan just as fair as you. One who won't leave the second another man comes along."
"You're probably right."
"I know I am. See, when I was young I was quite the good-looking lad as well and all the girls wanted to court me. However, I had my eyes set on one lady who was beautiful as they come. But she never loved me, besides she was in the upper end of society and never even noticed me. It ended well for me though when I met my lovely wife and we settled down and have been the happiest we could've hoped for."
I smiled, it was a nice story. Perhaps all was not lost.
"Sometimes what you think you want, isn't what you need. Remember that boy. Life has a weird way of blessing folks, but it does in the end. You just stay here a night or so and everything will work out. I give my word."
I know it's short, but what do you think of Peter's situation? Do you feel bad for him? Does he still have hope?
What do you think of the old man's advice?
The next chapter will be another fun perspective!! Be sure to stay on the lookout on Monday!! :)
