Spellbound Academy summary
To start off, here's the simple theme of the book series:
Magiiiic!
The story was inspired by Harry Potter, and follows a similar theme in that the events take place mostly at a school that teaches magic. This school is called Spellbound Academy of Magic. The three main characters are:
Abigail Fox, the character the story mostly revolves around.
Daphne Cullin, Abigail's best friend and first person for her to meet at the academy.
Cordessa Flynn, an elf girl who can be prideful and arrogant but still has a sensitive side.
Abigail and Daphne are both humans, but Abigail is a Crupple, which means she's a magical person born to non magical parents. Humans are one of four races, the other three being elves, fauns and centaurs. The magical families live peacefully with the magical families, except for the non magical humans, who isolate themselves in a large city called Tillsdale. The city is surrounded by impenetrable stone walls. Abigail leaves Tillsdale to attend Spellbound Academy, and is seen as unusual because of her ability to talk to animals and lack of knowledge of the magical world. One student in particular causes her a lot of trouble because she doesn't come from a traditionally magic family. Her name is Durla Daftheart, and she's in the opposite house as Abigail and her friends.
Spellbound Academy has two houses: Owl House and Dragon House. Students are placed in their appropriate houses by Gorrix, a very wise griffin capable of human speech and mild telepathy. The subjects studied at the school include:
Charms, taught by professor Prescilla Dappleworth, an elf.
Conjuration (the materialization of objects), taught by professor Boris Gordy, a human.
Transformation, taught by professor Carlos Capernick, a man who used to be a human but through a mishap several years ago turned himself into a humanoid chameleon.
Potions, taught by professor Jill Riley, a faun.
The official sport of the magical world is a game called quickchase. It's a high-speed, dangerous game in which four players on each team race to catch a magically animated golden sparrow. The only rules are that no player can leave the field, and nobody can be intentionally knocked off their broomstick. Yes, it's played on broomsticks.
In my universe, broomsticks are operated by inserting one's wand into the end of the handle. You can't cast a spell on the fly as a result. But hey, brooms need a magical fuel source!
Speaking of wands, a student will receive a wand when they turn twelve and attend a magic academy. Wands have a stone in the handle that will turn a color depending on the individuals inner traits. For instance, Abigail's is aqua, Daphne's is pink, and Cordessa's is purple-pink. It is possible for two people to have the same wand stone color.
Another important detail is that magical people absolutely need magical energy. Magical energy is what fuels all magic. Abigail starts to experience some discomfort in the story when she comes of age, which would be twelve, and starts to need this energy. Tillsdale, however, is completely void of any magical anything, so no relief is found until she finds out that she's a Crupple via a letter dropped off by a pygmy dragon, an animal used to send messages. Her parents convince themselves the letter is false because they fear magic and don't want Abigail near it, and their negative energy causes Abigail to get worse until Jill Riley comes and convinces her parents to let her go to Arlan, a city in the magical world.
Magical creatures produce their own magical energy, so any magical person to visit Tillsdale should have one with them to stay comfortable. For instance, when Jill comes to collect Abigail, she brings along her jackalope, Orion.
Might add more later :)
