Chapter 9 Captain Cold

I still really like Skillet! XD

I stopped to stare at the carnage. A huge patch of ice was melting slowly in the center of the road. A police car had crashed into one of the shops. I was completely oblivious to the people pointing at me until there was a low electronic buzz.

I whipped around and ducked as a light blue ball sailed over my head. A cold blast of air blew over me. I shivered and looked toward where the shot had come from. A man wearing dark glasses was watching me from the entrance of a large theater. He nodded to me and slid inside.

I let out my breath and ran through the door. The first thing I noticed was that there were some very nice arches that I would have loved to look at closer. The second thing I noticed was that Joe was having a standoff with Captain Cold. Cold sneered and pulled the trigger.

I jumped forward and pushed Joe out of the way of the icy streak. He flew to the side and I felt a burning cold in my chest. I flew backward and crashed into a wall. Joe stared at me as I stood up shakily.

Cold laughed evilly. "More interested in saving others than yourself hmmm? Let's see how you do..." He whipped his gun around and fired at a person standing on the stairs.

I ran up and grabbed them, carrying them to safety, ignoring the freezing pain in my chest. I got back onto the balcony only to run to the opposite side of the large room to save a couple running for the door. The ball of ice shattered the window.

"Not bad," Cold growled. He aimed through a large door that led to the auditorium. A security guard was standing in the middle, right through the door. The gun whirred to life.

I ran forward just after the gun fired. I ran next to the jet of ice, keeping pace with a point just behind where I needed to be. I'd been late, and for the first time, it mattered.

The security guard flew back, completely frozen as if he'd been put in a freezer for a week. I stopped, the carpet smoking beneath my boots. I looked down at the man.

"Skye? You haven't said anything since you agreed to get him. Are you okay?" Dr. Wells asked.

I looked down at the ice, which was steaming and spreading thin blue threads across the green fire emblem on my chest. Not so fiery now. I reached up, pushing the button. "Not really."

Another sharp, freezing pain arced across my back. I shouted and turned back toward the door. Captain Cold was gone. My vision was getting blurry. I looked down one last time at the man I'd failed to save and ran toward S.T.A.R. Labs.

I burst through the door and collapsed on the floor, from pain, dizziness, and cold.

"Skye!" Cisco ran to my side and knelt down. "Are you okay?"

I groaned and looked up at him. "Your cold gun sucks big time," I panted.

"You need to get on the bed," Dr. Wells ordered. "Caitlin can take it from there."

Cisco helped me up and hovered nervously as I sat down carefully on the hospital bed.

"What happened?" Dr. Wells asked as Caitlin started putting heating pads on the frozen spots.

All hopes that they would forget to ask that vanished. I sighed. "I wasn't fast enough."

"What do you mean? I know details aren't your specialty," Dr. Wells gave me a small smile. "But right now details are necessary."

I told them everything, from almost getting hit the first time, to the security guard I hadn't been fast enough to save. Cisco's face seemed to fall more with every word.

There was a shout from one of the speakers next to the computer. "He's chasing me with lightning! AH!"

   "You'll live!" I called. "I promise!"

There was another yelp. "Okay! I'm coming to you before I get toasted."

There was a whoosh and Barry slid to a stop on the tiled floor. "Skye, are you alright?"

"I'll be fine," I said. I clicked the heating pads so that they were on high. "Cisco's heating pads will save me."

Cisco grinned. "You don't want it on high."

I rolled my eyes. "Yes I do. I need it to be really hot. I've gotta go after Captain Cold again."

"How did it go with Weather Wizard?" Cisco asked excitedly, turning to Barry.

I smiled at his enthusiasm. "Cisco, you're such a dork."

"Thanks." He looked at Barry expectantly.

Barry shrugged. "It took me a while to find him and when I did he decided he was going to fry me. I'll have to try again later."

He disappeared in a blur of motion, but was back a few seconds later wearing his street clothes.

"I should do that," I said absently.

"No you shouldn't," Caitlin said. "You need to wait until you thaw out."

I smirked at her. "That was a very odd sentence."

She gave me a wry smile. "Glad you care."

I leaned back and watched Barry run out the door. He was probably late. I knew I was late just because I would likely be laying on the bed for at least half an hour. I listened to Cisco and Caitlin arguing about something that I probably didn't want to know about.

I looked up when I heard Dr. Wells's wheelchair coming my way. He stopped next to me and smiled. "They're debating how many bugs you and Barry eat every day."

"None," I said. "I'm pretty sure I would know if I ate any bugs. I'm guessing you didn't make the two minute journey over here just to tell me what they were arguing about."

"No, it isn't. I was wondering if you would like to work here."

   I smiled. "Doing what?"

Dr. Wells laughed quietly. "Well there isn't much we can do, but Cisco could show you how to build things and you could make technology for your use."

I looked through the window to my right, at the treadmill Barry had been using to test his speed. "What about the forensics lab?"

"You don't need to say yes," Dr. Wells assured me. "I won't be offended, but I will say that Barry works the lab fine by himself if that's what you were worried about."

I grinned, looking back to him. "Tech is fun. What first?"

Dr. Wells smiled. "First, you should let Barry and Joe know that you won't be showing up today and that you're working here." He turned his wheelchair around and started toward Cisco and Caitlin.

I pulled out my phone and decided I was to lazy to to type S.T.A.R. so instead I did a group text saying, Got a job at STAR Labs. Won't be coming. :) Barry would probably be more annoyed with my spelling of S.T.A.R. than Joe would be.

Sure enough, a few seconds later, I received a response from Barry,  It's S.T.A.R. not STAR. Anyway, have fun with whatever you get to do.

I smiled, setting my phone on the table next to the hospital bed. I decided I was done sitting with the heating pads. I jumped up, pulled my street clothes out of my bag and ran out of the room. After I changed I ran back into the main room and flopped down on the bed again.

Everyone looked over at me. I waved. "Hi."

Cisco grinned. "You moved didn't you?"

I shook my head sarcastically. "No, I just magically changed positions and am now Skye, not Spark."

Even Caitlin smiled a bit at my sarcastic comment. "You need a shirt that says, 'Sarcasm Alert' in big green letters on the front."

I grinned. "That is an amazing idea. Along with my little fire symbol on the back."

"I'm not sure that would be wise," Dr. Wells said. "But you could get away with a black shirt with green letters. People wouldn't think twice."

"This is great! Where are the shirts and fabric paint?"

Caitlin shook her head and walked away. I assumed she was going to get what I'd requested. I looked over at the treadmill again, thinking about how I'd never used it. I was just about to get up and do just that when my stomach grumbled. I smiled and headed for Cisco's stash of candy.

"I moved it," Cisco said as I opened the cabinet.

I turned around and leaned against it. "Can you give me something filled with sugar or energy please?" I asked sweetly.

Cisco pulled out a bag. "Here. These are protein bars. Specially made by yours truly for you and Barry."

   I took the bag. "Thanks."

Caitlin came back with a black T-shirt and a box of fabric paint. She plunked it down on a table. "There. That's what you wanted."

I grinned and sat down with one of Cisco's bars and set to work.
