Chapter 30 The Cat's Out of the Bag

Saila had ADD worse than Barry and I. She was currently spinning her chair while tossing a ball from one hand to the other. She was also quietly singing a song in Spanish.

Cisco, Caitlin, and Barry were all sitting staring at each other while they brainstormed how to find this new metahuman. None of them had come up with any ideas, and they hasn't wanted mine for whatever reason. I thought my idea was the simplest, but they had wanted me to watch cameras, not give them advice. Their loss.

Bucky had joined me out of boredom. He had started pointing out random people in weird outfits after about five minutes of watching, which was endlessly amusing for both of us.

"Hey, look," he said, leaning forward and pointing to the screen. "That lady is wearing one orange shoe and one neon green one."

I snickered. "With fire engine red pants no less."

"And don't forget the turquoise shirt," he added, hooting with laughter.

Caitlin shot us an irritated look, so I quickly changed the camera we were looking through. Bucky instantly started snickering. I scanned the screen, trying to find what was so funny. I didn't see it, so I looked to him for help.

By this time he was doubled over laughing. He managed to point at the screen. A lady was walking casually down the street in an honest to goodness leopard print body suit. She was getting at least a thousand odd looks from everyone, and they gave her a very wide berth.

I grinned. "Okay Buckaroo," I said. "You watch the cameras. I'm going to offer my opinion whether it's wanted or not."

Bucky scooted his chair in front of the computer after I stood up. He was still snickering to himself as his clicked to the next camera.

I walked straight up to the threesome. "So are you guys ready for the master at planning to come up with something for you?"

Cisco raised an eyebrow at me. "You are not the master at planning. Did you see your vacation from working on the Accelerator?"

"I'll have you know that I met all kinds of really awesome superheroes on that trip," I pointed out. "It was well thought out and loads of fun."

Cisco rolled his eyes, but couldn't hold back an eager look. I knew he was going to ask me about some favorite superhero and make me tell him absolutely everything about them. That's just what Cisco did best.

"So he has vibrations right?" I asked.

All three of them looked at me in confusion. Apparently, we didn't know that... but it was so obvious. How could they not see it? It was as plain as day. Conspicuous as a raven among swans or a flute among drums.

"How would you know if he or she had vibrations?" Caitlin asked.

"And what makes you say it's a he?" Barry added.

"Well, it was kind of our working theory," Saila added. "But that wasn't a for sure yet."

Cisco just leaned back against the desk and grinned. "Let's watch the mastermind at work."

It felt like he just poured ice water down my spine. I tried to push down the horror. It's fine Skye, I told myself, he doesn't know. He couldn't know. Relax.

Cisco's face fell. "Skye? Yo Techster, you good?"

I put my hands on the back of the nearest chair and forced a smile. "Yeah. I'm fine."

Barry shook his head. "First, tell us your thoughts, then explain that reaction that made you turn white as a freaking ghost."

Well, there goes that. "W-well..." I cursed myself for stuttering. That wouldn't help my 'I'm fine' case. "Firstly, there was no glass left on the edges of the window and no sign of any contact at all. It's highly unlikely that our meta used a large square of something. Anything of that size would be so heavy and awkward he would've had to drop it."

Barry nodded. "I think I see..."

"Second, all the pieces of glass were relatively the same size and there was hardly any powder at all," I continued, feeling slightly more confident with myself. "If it had been broken by anything other than vibrations there would be way more powder. Also-"

"My goodness, Skye," Caitlin said. "How long were you staring at the broken glass?"

Oops. Well, they were going to know soon anyway. "However long it took Barry and Saila to put it back together."

"So about a minute," Cisco said. "You, Skye, are amazing."

I smiled weakly at him. "Yeah. You could say that I'm a... mastermind."

Bucky must have noticed my expression. His quiet snickers vanished as he got up and walked over to me. He stood on my right side and put his left arm around me. The adamantium alloy I'd made it out of was icy cold as always, sending another shiver up my arm.

Saila's chair stopped spinning around. She was doing something on her desk, but I knew she would be listening. There was no way she wouldn't be. Curiosity killed the cat, everyone says, but the curiosity of everyone else is what's going to kill me.

   Lovely.

I'd have to be vague. Details are my specialty, but I can't handle doing details.

"When I went to Starling City to look for the Arrow, you all know when that was," I started, trying to keep my voice from shaking. None of them said anything, but Cisco nodded. Encouraged slightly, I continued. "I was kidnapped. I lingered too long outside an alleyway I guess."

Barry looked like he was trying to figure out what emotion to feel first, confusion, anger, interest, worry, sympathy... Caitlin just looked concerned and Cisco.... well... Cisco looked horrified as if he thought it was somehow his fault. Bucky's face was unreadable as ever.

"I still don't know where I was," I went on, closing my eyes for focus. "Oliver said it was a warehouse deep in the Glades. I never wanted to see it. I didn't care.

"They had locked me in a room just a bed when I was unconscious. They'd left me all my technology from my pack, but I couldn't use any of it. Signals blocked and no internet. Just a few bandages on my upper arms and a faint headache that I thought was from dehydration." So much for being vague.

"Only a little bit later the room started smelling like laughing gas. I woke up in the room with a different side effect each time. Headaches, nausea, soreness, you name it."

Caitlin let out a breath. "Toxic chemical combinations?"

I nodded and tried to continue, but my voice caught in my throat. I was left voiceless and nervous. IDIOT! My brain screamed at me. It's not hard to just speak and tell them! I tried to ignore the little voice in my head, but it didn't shut up.

I realized that Bucky was behind me now and he had both arms around me. Despite the icy feeling of his metal arm, I felt calmer. I tried to figure out why, but my "mastermind" brain couldn't find the answer.

"Oliver got me out, and at first we didn't think anything had changed. Until he told me that I was part of 'Project Mastermind.' He showed me the sign he'd found on my door and he made me tell him what happened. He-"

"He knew?" Barry interrupted angrily. At least he'd chosen an emotion. "He knew my twin sister had been kidnapped by a group of mad scientists, which would also be the reason I was sick for two weeks, and he. Didn't. Tell me?"

I opened my eyes. Barry looked like he was beyond frustrated and a little desperate. "I told him not to," I admitted. "I asked him not to tell any of you, excluding Bucky and Saila. I didn't know them yet."

After it was silent for a minute, Caitlin spoke softly, "Go on, Skye. It sounds like you're almost done."

I nodded. "Oliver asked me how he had gotten in. I barely got a look at the room he'd broken into, and I couldn't see very well. My brain hadn't been functioning right and the memory was so fuzzy... I hardly remembered anything, but I was right on the first guess."

The silence that filled the room was broken only by the whirring of my old computer's cooling fan. I'd have to fix it sometime soon or replace the whole computer before it drove me crazy.

"You know how superheroes have really cool and kinda scary origin stories?" Cisco asked, clearly trying to lighten the mood. "I think we just got Skye's up on that list."

I couldn't help myself, I laughed, and after a moment... the others joined me.

I was reminded that I wasn't, and never would be, alone.
