Chapter 13 Calm Down
"Cisco!" I shouted, leaning out of my small glass room. "Bolts? Where?"
"Not until you tell me what you're making!" Cisco shouted back from where he was still tinkering with the boomerang.
"Not until you tell me where the bolts are!"
"Not until-!"
"What are you two arguing about?" Oliver's familiar voice asked.
I swiveled my chair around and almost crashed into my doorway. Oliver stood in the large entryway to the Cortex. He was looking from where Cisco now stood in his own doorway to me. I got up and slammed the door behind me after I'd left. Not that it did much good. All of my walls were glass except for the bottom half, which was made of steel.
"You don't have any bolts do you Oliver?" I asked sweetly.
Oliver frowned at me. "Why would I have bolts?"
I gave him a reproachful look. "Please... I know things."
Oliver sighed. "No. Not right now I don't."
"Dang it!" I turned to Cisco. "Ciiiiissscooooo?"
Cisco shook his head. "Not until-"
"All I need is a bolt! Then I'll be done and you can see it!"
Cisco seemed to be having an inward battle with himself. He hesitated then said, "Fine. Second drawer of the toolbox."
I grinned and pulled out the entire second drawer, shooting over to my work space and plunking it down on the table before shooting out again. "What did you want Oliver?"
"To talk," Oliver cast a sidelong look at Cisco. "Somewhere else."
Cisco looked a little confused but didn't object as we started for the door.
Oliver led the way outside and started down the sidewalk. People stared at us as we walked, clearly wondering why Oliver Queen was hanging out with a lanky girl wearing a t-shirt that read, 'I solemnly swear I am up to no good', and worn out jeans.
The sky was almost black. Only two stars twinkled in the darkness as the streetlamps started to turn on with little pops.
"So, what does the famous Oliver want with me?" I asked, smirking up at him.
Oliver rolled his eyes. "Don't tell me you think this is between Oliver and Skye."
I frowned. "Oh... so it's not just a 'hey how you doing?' type thing?"
"Skye..."
I gave him a small smile. "Just say what you want to say. Spark's listening."
Oliver gave me a slightly amused look and slipped into an alley. "Is she talking too?"
"No. Spark's voice is really loud. It echoes."
Oliver nodded, as if this made sense. "Right. Do you really think Barry went unaffected?"
I started to say yes, then stopped. I remembered everything he'd said after seeing the man. The way he'd responded to Oliver's, very Arrow-like, question about timing, and his grumbling at me after getting shot. "No."
Oliver nodded again. "I'm worried about what he'll do. To the city... and himself..."
"That is, unfortunately, not very surprising. Considering what he does when he get angry. I just hope-" I stopped, looking up at the burned warehouse Oliver had just led me to. "How did you know about this place?"
Oliver didn't answer, just pushed open the door, which squealed loudly on its hinges. There was evidence of another, much more recent, fire. "I didn't until I found it last night. Odd that there's nothing here to burn and yet there was still a fire." He gave me a pointed look.
I walked into the center of the warehouse. An asterisk of lighter lines spread out from where I stood. I crouched down and ran my hand over the blackened concrete. There wasn't any ash, no sign that anything had been burned.
"Pyro's back," I murmured, looking around for any hints.
"What?" Oliver and another person said.
I leaped to my feet and spun a slow circle before I realized that the second voice had been Felicity in my ear. I relaxed. "Ask Cisco, Felicity. I'm preoccupied."
"Okay." I heard chair wheels rumble on the floor. "Cisco!"
Oliver tapped my shoulder. "What did you say the first time?
"Pyro's back," I said again. "It's the nickname Cisco gave a person who can control fire."
"Nope! Nope!" Cisco's voice shouted in my ear. I winced as he didn't lower his voice. "I have a better one!"
I rolled my eyes. "Cisco I-"
"FIRESTORM!"
"CISCO YOU'RE IN MY EAR! QUIT YELLING!"
"Sorry."
"Thank you!"
Oliver smiled. "I see. We should get you back to S.T.A.R. before Cisco dies of anticipation of seeing your... whatever you're making."
"You coming? Or is it just me?" I asked, bouncing on my heels.
"Just you."
"Okiebye!" I ran off and burst through the doors of the Cortex, making Caitlin and Felicity scream.
I slowed down as I neared my work space and opened the door, sitting down at my desk and pulling two bolts out of the drawer. I picked up the gloves and screwed one bolt on each at exactly the same point on the wrist.
"Skye!" Cisco shouted. "What did you do with the Second Drawer Down?!"
"Come and get it!" I called back.
I checked the gloves to make sure they wouldn't explode as Cisco walked over. He stopped in my door, gazing curiously at the gloves. "What're those?"
"They're for you," I said distractedly, checking their flexibility. I looked up to make sure nobody was within earshot before I continued. "They should protect your hands from anything."
Cisco took them from me with a huge grin. "Awesome!" He turned them over, admiring the shining fabric. "What's it made of?"
I grinned. "I have absolutely no idea at all."
Cisco's grin grew. "Me neither." He started to walk away.
"Cisco!" I called, waving an arm. When he turned I pointed over my shoulder at the Second Drawer Down. "Drawer!"
"Right. Thanks."
He hurried back and took the drawer, walking back over to the boomerang. I saw him slide the gloves I'd given him onto his hands before Caitlin shouted in alarm. "Skye! Barry's come and gone and he's not being smart!"
I leaped up, slipped into my Spark suit and shot out the door. "Where is he not being smart? And how did I not see him come and go?"
"You were talking with Cisco," Diggle's voice said.
"Okay, before you tell me where Barry is, who all is there?" I asked, wondering how I'd not noticed Diggle.
"Me, Diggle, Caitlin, and Felicity," Cisco said. "Add Dr. Wells too."
"Now. Barry."
"Listen carefully," Caitlin said. "Right." I dodged around a group of people and turned right. "Left. Left. Straight. Slow down. There. See?"
"Yes I see." I shot toward where Barry was standing over Eddie, eyes gleaming with fury. "FLASH!"
Barry looked up at me as I skidded to a stop on the opposite side of Eddie. His voice vibrated when he spoke. At least he had that much sense. "He wants us arrested," Barry growled. "He wants us gone."
"This isn't you. Listen to-" I jerked to the side as someone landed next to me. "Oh it's just you."
Oliver stood at my side, eyes fixed on the building, bow out and arrow drawn. I turned back around to see Barry running up the side of the building. I took a deep breath and shot after him. An arrow flew just behind me as I reached the top and flew several extra feet up. I landed lightly on the edge.
Barry was standing twenty feet away, his eyes flickered with gold lightning. A cruel smile on his face. He ran forward, punching and kicking. Sparks and lightning surrounded us as I blocked his attacks, thankful I'd taken Karate. There was a whistling sound and an arrow flew toward us.
Barry leaned out of the way, but I ducked underneath him and ran behind Oliver. Barry smiled wickedly once more. "You missed."
"I don't think he did," I stated calmly.
The arrow had embedded itself in the concrete wall behind Barry. It beeped and a fireball erupted in front of us. Barry flew forward, landing on his face. He gasped.
"Whoa whoa whoa!" Cisco called in my ear. "Don't kill him!"
"He's fine," I assured him as Barry got to his feet and sprinted down to street level. "You come up with anything yet?"
"We are on our way right now," Diggle said.
I ran down the side of the building after Barry. "What do we need to do?"
"Get a hold of him and point him at the street on my mark," Cisco said. "We should get there in the next couple minutes."
I faced Barry. Both of us were breathing hard. "Several minutes," I gasped. "Right. Do you know how long a span of time that is?"
An arrow hit Barry's arm. He yelled and yanked it out. A green mist rose up around him as his whole body vibrated. When the mist was gone, he turned back to me.
Oliver landed behind him and got another arrow in Barry's leg. Barry fell to one knee.
I caught him. "Cisco?"
"Now!" Cisco shouted.
I got Barry up and we faced the street. Oliver held Barry up on the other side.
One of S.T.A.R. Labs's vans screeched sideways at the mouth of the alley. The door opened and lights of different colors started flashing, making me dizzy. I closed my eyes until the pulsing colors stopped.
I opened my eyes and looked at Barry. He stood between Oliver and I, panting, eyes fixed on the ground.
"Barry?" I asked quietly, dimly aware of Iris and Eddie watching from across the street.
Barry looked up and met my eyes. "I'm so sorry for whatever I just did."
I smiled. "You weren't yourself."
Oliver started pulling us toward the van, Barry limping between us. "We still have your meta-human to catch," he said.
"Well," Barry said, a small smile appearing on his face. "At least... if there's trouble... there's three of us right?"
Oliver nodded. "Right," he said quietly. "There are three of us."
