"Mercedes, what's the deal with you and Sam?" Rachel asks.

"You've been stealing glances in the choir room, and you still haven't told us what happened over summer vacation." Violet says.

Mercedes smiles. "Okay, okay, okay, okay." She says.

"Go." Kurt encourages.

"It's true. Sam and I spent a lot of time together at the lake."

Mercedes and Sam break out into 'Summer Nights' from Grease.

"Finn, give me a drum roll!" Will says as he writes something on the whiteboard.

Will writes 'Marry Me?' on the whiteboard.

"Yes, I am proposing to Ms. Pillsbury. This is the kind of news that you share with your family, and you guys are my family." Will tells his students.

"Mr. Shue, we're so happy for you." Violet says.

"We totally don't think you'll screw it up this time." Santana comments.

"It's got to be perfect. I'm sitting down with Emma's parents to ask for permission, and then this proposal needs to knock her well-washed socks off. And that's where you guys come in, okay? So the assignment for the week is to come up with a proposal number. And you know Ms. Pillsbury... it's got to be perfect." Will says.

"Well, you can count on us, Mr. Shue." Finn says.

Violet smiles, already having a number in mind. Kurt sees her smile and smiles too.

Proposals are so romantic.

Finn is brought into the Spanish classroom by Will. Burt, Carole and Violet are sitting down in chairs at a table.

"Oh. Uh... hi." Finn says.

"Have a seat." Burt tells his stepson.

"Okay." Finn obeys and sits next to Violet.

"Will, uh... told us about your plans for the future." Burt says.

"Yeah, which was supposed to be private." Finn says, giving his teacher a look.

"Look, I-I knew telling them might upset you, but I felt obligated to bring Burt, Violet and your mom into this discussion. This is a big decision." Will tells Finn.

"Well, you know, I was... I was going to tell you guys about it sooner or later." Finn replies.

"Look, Finn, you know what I want, okay? I'm going to need somebody to take over the shop while I'm off in DC, and if I let your brother do it, okay, he's going to have all the grease monkeys wearing white dinner jackets." Burt says.

"Yeah that's something Kurt would do." Violet says.

Finn nods. "Yeah. Yeah, he would. Uh... well, I'm not enlisting tomorrow." He says.

Burt nods. "Okay. Well, I'm glad. Not because I'm antimilitary or anything like that. I just don't get where you're coming from with this."

Finn smiles. "Well, my dad was a war hero. I have an obligation to him to... to be a good man."

Violet nods. "Mm-hmm."

"To make something of myself, to... to help people like he did." Finn finishes.

Carole sighs. "I knew it was about him."

"You don't have to prove to anyone that your dad is in you. You know, everybody already knows what kind of man you are." Violet tells her future brother-in-law.

"Yeah, but how can you really know until you get tested? And what better way than... than to walk in his footsteps?" Finn states.

"Your dad was a good man. He was brave and true, and... he had the same goofy sense of humor you do. But he didn't die in Iraq. He served over there, but something happened to him. I never found out what." Carole starts.

She takes a minute to talk clearly.

"Uh, I... he... I don't know if he-he did something or saw something or just lost his way, but... but he broke." She explains.

Finn looks confused. "He died a hero's death, right?"

"He died in Cincinnati after being dishonorably discharged. Honey, he had a drug problem that he tried to get over when he came home... for... for you mostly... but... but then he... he would just... disappear for a day or a week sometimes. One day, he just didn't come back. It was an overdose." Carole reveals.

Violet gently grabs Finn's hand in a sisterly fashion. Finn squeezes it back.

"Oh, I feel sick." Finn says uneasily.

"It's a lot to hear. Just, uh, you know, take it slow." Violet encourages gently.

"Oh, my God." Finn mutters.

"I see everything that was good in him... I see it all in you." Carole tells him.

"Why did you lie to me? Why?" Finn asks, getting a bit angry.

Carole sighs. "Because your dad was so much more than the last few months of his life. That man he became was not your father. Honey, I was going to tell you when I thought you were ready."

Finn stands up. "Well, I'm not ready. I mean, how-how... how-how did you think I could ever be ready for something like that?" He says.

He looks to Violet, who gets up and follows him out of the room. They walk down the hallway until Finn slides down a set of lockers. Violet sits next to him.

"Are you okay?" She asks gently.

"No." Finn answers shakily.

When Finn's waterworks begin, Violet's arms embrace him in a hug. "It's okay Finn. It'll be alright."

In glee club, Violet stands at the front of the room, singing Rascal Flatts' 'God Bless the Broken Road' as a contender for an engagement song.

[God Bless the Broken Road by Violet]

By the end of the song, Violet had most of the girls in tears, and she had Kurt tearing up.

"Violet... that was an amazing song choice." Will says.

Violet smiles. "Thanks Mr. Shue. I know you and Ms. Pillsbury have gone through a lot, and I thought this song represented you two best."

Will smiles gently and hugs her.

He knows that song fits him and Emma's relationship perfectly, but it also fits Violet and Kurt's relationship.

Finchel and Vurt are on a double date at Breadstix.

"No wonder none of my dreams ever work out. 'Cause I got loser DNA." Finn says.

"Well, if you're throwing a pity party, I want in. I have as much chance getting into NYADA as I do playing Stanley in Streetcar." Kurt says.

Violet frowns at Kurt's lack of confidence in himself. "I have all the faith in you that you'll make it into NYADA Kurt."

Kurt holds her hand and kisses it. It makes Violet smile.

"Yeah, well, the letters came out from NYADA today saying who are finalists, and I have been trolling the NYADA chat rooms, and people are already talking about getting those letters." Rachel says.

"You didn't get one?" Violet asks. She knew Rachel also applied for NYADA.

Rachel shakes her head. "No, and I'm not going to, because Figgins put an addendum to my application talking about my suspension."

Kurt sighs. "Screw this. I'm getting a whole cheesecake." He says and then snaps his fingers.

"The future used to be such an abstract idea." Kurt adds on.

"Uh, and the dream was enough, you know? But now the future has the nerve to show up, and it's expecting us to do something, and it's not interested in giving a lending hand." Finn claims.

"I'm actually kind of scared. I thought the world would care more." Rachel says.

"Make that two cheesecakes." Kurt mumbles to himself and snaps his fingers once more.

"Mm-hmm." Rachel agrees.

"I'm just glad I have another year before I have to stress about college stuff. I'm already looking for colleges, but I'm not applying until next year." Violet comments. For a moment, Rachel forgot Violet was a junior.

"I actually thought we were all going to get out of here. You know? Why did she have to tell me that? And why can't I have something in my life that's... that's special, that means something?" Finn asks.

Kurt and Violet look at each other and then back at Finn, who doesn't see the hurt look on Rachel's face.

Finn just said the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Rachel sings Usher's 'Without You,' but it's mostly directed at Finn.

[Without You by Rachel]

"You know, I just wanted to say that I thought that you blew that song out of the water and totally nailed the assignment." Santana says.

3... 2... 1.

"Oh, no, wait, wait a second. Was... the assignment wasn't 'make everything about Rachel Berry and force everyone to watch,' was it?" Santana says.

"Easy, Santana." Violet warns.

"It's fine. That was beautiful, Rachel." Will says.

"So, Mr. Shue, what do you think? We've given you a whole bevy of songs to choose from, from upbeat and awesome to a little overwrought for my taste." Artie says.

"They've all been incredible, you guys. I think I just need a little more time to really consider my choices." Will says.

The New Directions are using the pool that's used for the synchronized swimming team to perform the proposal song for Emma. They're performing Rihanna's 'We Found Love.'

[We Found Love by New Directions]

Violet smiles from her place next to Kurt as they watch the proposal happen.

"Emma... You are the one. You always have been. The truth is, I feel like I've had to stop myself from doing this from the second I first saw you. The first time I held this hand, it felt like I'd held it a million times before. Like somehow, it's always been here. Life is messy. It just is. And I... I know that's hard for you, but that's why you have me... to balance things out. But you have to realize, you do that for me, too. Every day. Loving you and being loved by you makes everything better. I love you with everything I am and everything I ever hope to be. So... Emma Pillsbury... Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?" Will asks as he gets on one knee and presents Emma with a ring box.

Emma smiles. "I love you so much."

"Is that a yes?" Will asks.

"Yes. Yes. Yes." Emma nods.

"Yeah!" Finn says as he starts to clap.

Everyone cheers for Will and Emma.

When everyone gets home, Kurt goes to talk to Burt alone. "Dad? Can I talk to you?" He asks.

"Sure. What's up?" Burt asks his son.

Kurt sighs and tries to settle his nerves. "Um... I was wondering if you still had Mom's engagement ring?" He asks.

Burt raises an eyebrow. "Can I ask where you're going with this?" He wonders.

Kurt nods. "I've been doing a lot of thinking over the last few months... and I've decided that in the next few years, I'm going to marry Violet." He announces.

He gets nothing but silence from Burt.

"Are you sure you want to make that big of a commitment at such a young age, son? I mean, you're gonna graduate and she's graduating next year." Burt says.

"I know. Which is why I plan on proposing after I graduate. She can have her senior year and then maybe we'll get married the summer after she graduates. Dad, this is what I want. I want to spend the rest of my life making her happy. I love her; I want to spend the rest of my life with her." Kurt explains.

Burt has tears in his eyes. "You sound just like your mother, y'know. She was always so adamant about love, and I see her in you." He says. Kurt smiles tearfully. "Tell you the truth, I was wondering when you'd start thinking about this kinda stuff. You've been in love with her for years. You found the one, Kurt." Burt says.

Burt walks to his dresser and pulls out a ring box. "You gotta promise to take good care of this until you're ready to ask her. Your mother would've been so proud of you, Kurt. You're following your heart." He says and hands the engagement ring over to his son.

Kurt throws his arms around Burt in a hug. "I love you Dad." He says.

Burt smiles. "I love you too Kurt." He says and then lets Kurt go off to his bedroom.

Kurt makes his way to his bedroom and places the engagement ring in a locked drawer in his nightstand.

He smiles as he thinks about the future when he settles into bed for the night.

"One day, you'll be Mrs. Violet Hummel."
