Chapter 85
Chapter 85
Len.
"What did Oliver say?" Yuma asked. I frowned. Rin and I hadn't told anyone else about our problem.
"Ms. Yowane's leaving tomorrow," I answered honestly as Rin picked up.
"Len!" She sounded tied up. Not literally, of course.
"R-Rin! We need to talk about something!" I watched my words. I wanted to tell Yuma and Gumi, but I just couldn't, not without Rin by my side.
"What is it? I'm about to get on the plane!"
I sighed. "Please come back quickly."
She paused. "I will," she said finally, "And tell everyone that I'll be attending school on Thursday!"
"Alright!" I said before she hung up. I sighed and looked up at Yuma.
"Are you going to tell us now?" He frowned.
"T-Tell you what?" I yelped.
He sighed, "We know that something's up with you and Rin. I think it's best if you told us."
I shivered. Yuma knew how to give the icy stare. "Alright," I mumbled.
"Yay!" Gumi chirped, offering me her hand for a high-five, "Don't worry; whatever it is, we won't judge! Right, Yuma?"
He smiled at her. "Right."
So I told them everything, the entire story. Except for the last part, where Rin and I decided to screw the rules. I was afraid, you know, of telling them these things. It couldn't hurt to hold a bit back, right?
"So that's how it is," I sighed, looking at Gumi and Yuma. They were sitting on Yuma's bed, cross-legged, staring at me. Yuma's eyes sparkled with empathy. Gumi just looked plain sad, not that there's anything wrong with that.
"So Haku might know, huh?" Yuma frowned. I nodded.
"Rin won't be here till tomorrow afternoon," I mumbled, "And Ms. Yowane's flight is sometime after school. Not to mention the fact that she probably needs to pack and stuff..."
"This is horrible," Gumi put her head down in Yuma's lap and he stroked her hair.
"I guess," I shrugged, trying to make as little of a deal out of it as I could.
"You two should screw it," Yuma said suddenly.
"W-What?" I frowned.
"Screw whatever everybody else thinks, I mean," he ran a hand through his hair, "Whether the blood relation between you two is real or not, the love is real. I can tell."
"Thanks," I smiled weakly, "I know, that's probably what we're going to do, but...I still want to know!"
"Nobody's stopping you," Yuma said. I nodded.
"It won't make a difference," I said.
"Do you still want to sing, Len?" Gumi asked. I nodded, but my phone rang again.
Miku.
There was a knock at the door. I wiped my face and sniffed.
"It's open!" I called, and a second later, the door clicked open. Two paramedics, a man and a woman, hurried into the kitchen and saw me in my bloody clothing. The woman walked up to Kaito and kneeled down beside him, slowly removing my hand from his forehead.
"This is bad," she whispered. I started crying again as she turned to the man, "We're going to need the gurney!"
The man dashed out of the kitchen and yelled something. The woman looked at me calmly.
"It's okay," she said, patting my shoulder. I shook my head, snot dribbling from my nose.
"No, it's not okay!" I sobbed, "He was awake, b-but just a few seconds ago, he..."
"We're here now," the woman said as the man brought in another paramedic and wheeled in a gurney, "Do you want to come with him?"
"Y-Yes!" I nodded as she lifted Kaito's head out of my lap. I ran upstairs, grabbed my cell phone, and hurried back down as they wheeled the gurney out of my home.
"Come on!" The woman took my hand and pulled me into the back of the ambulance. I couldn't stop crying. Kaito wasn't moving, and his blood was everywhere, even as they tried to staunch the bleeding.
"Is he...is he going to...," I couldn't finish my sentence but they knew what I was getting at.
"We can't say for sure yet," the woman whispered. I clasped Kaito's hand and sobbed into it, stroking my cheek with his cold fingers.
How could I have done something so stupid?
Yuma.
Len looked up at me and swallowed slowly. "Kaito's...in the hospital," he said hoarsely.
"What?" I shook my head and Gumi grabbed my arm, "What're you..."
"That was Miku," he mumbled, getting to his feet in a daze, "He's hurt on the head really badly. I have to go!"
I grabbed Len by the shoulder before he could run off.
"We're coming with you," I said. He nodded furiously, fighting back tears.
"S-She's called Mikuo and the others, too, but...I don't know, man...Kaito can't just..."
"He won't," I shook my head, "Come on. My mom can drop us off."
"You sure?" Gumi frowned. I nodded.
"Either that, or I'll have to drive," I sighed.
"But you don't even have a license!" Gumi made a face.
"But I know how to drive," I said quickly, hauling her and Len out of my room and down the stairs, "Let's go."
