SPECTRUM | 41
It was Elsa and Tyrone's wedding day. Time had really flown by at the blink of an eye. Warren and I had spent the past two months hanging out nearly every single day and my feelings for him had only grown a lot stronger. I could no longer keep them to myself. However, none of the times we had spent together felt like the right time to tell him. My stepmother had said that I'd figure out when the time is right but it felt like the right time would never come.
Tyrone's father had given me a lift to the area where the wedding was supposed to be held. It was a remote area on top of a mountain. I had a fear of heights but the scenery was so captivating, it made me forget. There was a waterfall in the distance, not too far away, and we could hear the sound of the water crashing against the rocks below from where we stood. It was incredibly chilly. The wedding would commence once the bride's arrival had been confirmed. At the moment, Tyrone's father was still confirming whether everyone on the list had shown up. I thought about Warren. Coincidentally, I felt a tap on my shoulder and I turned around.
"I thought you were going to bail on me," I laughed awkwardly, trying to brush off the feeling that overtook me at the sight of him in a well-fitting suit. "I'm glad you came."
"I'd never bail on you," he grinned before looking me up and down. "You look great."
"You too."
"I've never heard of a wedding being held on top of a mountain this far away from home," he commented, staring at the waterfall that seemed to be a four minute walk away from us.
"Me too," I confessed, following his gaze. "But it seems like an Elsa and Tyrone thing to do."
When the music faded into slow, piano music, I knew what it was time for. I grabbed Warren by the arm and dragged him over to the side where we stood silently. Tyrone had offered for me to be the best man at his wedding but I respectfully denied the offer since that would mean I'd have to stick around for a majority of the ceremony. This sounded selfish but it was mainly because I'd be unable to handle all the noise and commotion. He, thankfully, understood my plight.
The sight of Elsa in a wedding dress with a large veil that made her resemble a princess was a startling reminder of how old we had all gotten. I smiled to myself as I noticed the tears already beginning to form in her eyes as her father led her over to her lover who was now practically sobbing. Warren, too, was smiling. It was heartwarming to see two people I'd randomly met during a college lecture now standing in front of each other, reciting their vows to each other. I had never seen Tyrone cry that much before. He could barely get through his vows. I thought about how my father had cried on his wedding day. I hoped I would be able to cry on my wedding day.. in a good way.
Once the priest had pronounced them husband and wife, I closed my eyes so as to avoid the sight of them kissing. That was when the cheering commenced. Startled, I placed my hands over my ears. Warren, upon noticing this, took a hold of my arm and led me away from the crowd. Once we were at a safe distance from them, I removed my hands from my ears and looked up at him, "Thank you."
This was the first time that I had bothered to make actual eye contact with him without looking away in less than a minute. His dark eyes held me in a trance. I saw the wrinkles form at the corner of his eyes. He was smiling at me.
"Wanna get out of here?" he offered, holding his hand out towards me.
Speechless, I accepted his hand. He proceeded to drag me into the direction of the waterfall. I turned back and watched as the crowd faded behind the mist. I could still hear the piano. I looked back at Warren and how his hair was flying in the wind. That, accompanied by the romantic song on the piano and the sound of the waterfall made this look like a scene straight out of a movie. I felt my heart swell.
We came to an abrupt stop when we were a few feet away from the waterfall. There were no barricades to prevent people from jumping and the fall looked fatal. My knees began to buckle underneath me. Warren wrapped his hand around my waist upon noticing my fear and just like that, my heart nearly stopped beating.
"Are you afraid of heights?"
I nodded, unable to speak.
He took my hand once again and we took a few steps away from the edge of the waterfall. This gesture made me swoon. He was so understanding and caring. I looked up at him once again and took in his features. His cheekbones, his slightly chapped lips, his eyebrow piercing, the small gap between his two front teeth and those beautiful tattoos of his, most of which told a story. Here, in front of the waterfall, away from the crowd, he looked like the human embodiment of the word 'beauty'. He looked so beautiful.
He turned to face me once he'd noticed that I was staring at him. With a small smile, he spoke, "What?"
And here, in front of the waterfall, away from the crowd, I felt my heart erupt like a volcano that had been dormant for far too long.
I stepped closer and leaned in.
Here, in front of the waterfall, away from the crowd, felt like the right moment.
I slammed my lips against his.
