SPECTRUM | 39
"Sorry I showed up unannounced," Warren apologized, rubbing the back of his neck as soon as Elsa had excused herself and rushed back into my bedroom. I was sure I heard a series of squealing coming from in there but I chose to ignore it. "You told me you'd be returning this week but I wasn't sure what day exactly."
"I came back a few days ago actually," I confessed. "I just didn't tell anyone because I wanted to rest a little. You're always welcome here though." I stepped aside and asked him to enter. He obliged and shut the door behind him.
"Here," he said, offering me a small plate with.. a slice of cake?
I looked up at him in confusion. Nevertheless, I accepted the plate and walked over to the kitchen to grab two forks so the both of us could enjoy it. I led him to the dining table and we took a seat.
"Remember when I said I'd get you something from my friend's café?" he said with a grin, prodding the cake with his fork. "I don't know if you're a strawberry fan.. but I am."
"I love strawberry," I confessed. "Especially anything that's strawberry flavoured. Reminds me of Kirby."
He let out a soft hum before clearing his throat, "Who was that lady earlier? A friend of yours, I assume?"
I nodded, "Elsa. Her fiancé is in the other room with her. His name is Tyrone. Both are good friends of mine, met them in college." He gave me a small grin before shoving a small piece of the cake into his mouth. I mirrored his actions and moaned at how good it tasted. He let out a soft chuckle, "You look like you've just tasted the rainbow."
"I think I have," I responded with a small smile. "This is delicious."
"I'll let my buddy know you said that," he nodded. "You should visit sometime."
"Am I allowed to bring Elsa and Tyrone with me?"
"You're always welcome to," he smiled. "Any friend of yours is a friend of mine."
"They're getting married in two months," I informed him. Then, I thought about what Elsa had said. I cleared my throat, "Elsa wanted me to invite you. She said we should attend the wedding together."
"Really?" he smiled. "I haven't attended a wedding since.. since Fenic got married. That was two years ago."
"My stepmother is currently in labour," I told him after a moment of silence. I inwardly smacked myself for being so straightforward. He let out a small cough before saying, "The one that's your biological mom's sister?"
I nodded, "She's actually not so bad after all."
"I'm glad you were able to change your perception of her," he responded. "You know, Bruno misses you a lot."
"Sounds like I should drop by one of these days then," I joked.
"You definitely should," he nodded. "Grandma moved back to my aunt's place and it's been awfully quiet back at home. I'm not used to being so.. alone all the time. That's also why I decided to come over."
"I can come over to your place after we're done with this cake," I offered, looking up at him for merely a second. "I miss Bruno too.. and I also missed spending time with you."
"I feel the same way," he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "But what about your friends? You're just going to leave them here?"
"Oh, we were just leaving!" Tyrone's voice echoed through the hall. He was dragging Elsa behind him who had a smug expression on her face. I rolled my eyes. "You know.. wedding plans and stuff. Enjoy the cake, you two!" I waved goodbye at them and Elsa sent a wink my way before shutting the door behind her. I pretended like I hadn't noticed.
"Do they know about me already?" Warren questioned. It seemed he had noticed the wink too. I pursed my lips, embarrassed, "Yeah. I've told them about you."
"Only good things I hope," he teased.
"There's nothing bad to say about you," I mumbled.
