SPECTRUM | 38
"I knew it!" Elsa exclaimed, throwing her fists in the air in victory. "I knew you liked him!"
"It was obvious you'd fall for him from the moment you said he looks kinda like me," Tyrone bragged with a smug grin on his face. "But all jokes aside, I'm happy for you. I never thought I'd live to see the day where you finally admit to liking someone."
"That's the thing," I started with a sigh. "I can admit it to you guys but not to Warren."
It had been a few days since I'd returned back home. I decided to take a few days' rest before informing Elsa and Tyrone about my return. The moment I did so, however, they showed up at my front door with a bunch of CDs and popcorn. That was how we ended up on my bed with the lights off, a comedy film that advertises itself as a horror film playing on the television in front of us. None of us were paying any attention to the movie since I'd decided to tell them halfway through about my newfound feelings for Warren.
"What's holding you back?" Elsa questioned, shoving a handful of popcorn into her mouth.
"I don't want to ruin the friendship we have," I admitted. "I don't know what happens after I confess to him. Dating in my thirties and potentially having my heart broken also sounds like a risk I'm unwilling to take."
"That sounds fair," Elsa hummed before wrapping her arm around my shoulder. I shrugged it off and she mumbled an apology. "I tell you what.."
"Uh oh, I sense an evil plan brewing in that little mind of yours," Tyrone commented.
"It's not evil!" she scoffed, smacking his arm. "I was going to suggest that you bring Warren along with you to our wedding."
That was when my phone rang. I was thankful to whoever it was on the other end for potentially saving my life there. I excused myself and rushed out of my room and into the kitchen to answer the call.
"Juno," my dad's voice sounded from the other end. "I'm glad you answered."
"What's going on, dad?" I questioned, noticing how he sounded a little off. "Is everything okay back there?"
"Yes, yes, everything's fine.. I think," he breathed. "Delancey's gone into labour. Her water broke a while ago.. they asked if I want to be in the room during the delivery but I'm afraid I might pass out."
"Dad, you should be with her," I suggested. "She needs you more than ever right now."
"I know, I know. You're right," he sighed. "Call me whenever you're free, okay?"
"Okay," I nodded. "Wait. Dad?"
"Yes, Juno?"
"I can travel back if you'd like. You said you can't take care of a child in your fifties. Maybe I can help?"
"Juno, focus on yourself for now," he said in a soft voice. "You can come back whenever you want to. Delancey and I will be fine."
With that, we said our goodbyes and I hung up.
I jumped when I felt someone touch my shoulder.
"Sorry," Elsa apologised. "Someone's knocking on your door."
I nodded and began to make my way over to the front door when she cleared her throat.
"Was that your dad?"
I stopped.
"Yes," I admitted. "My.. uh.. aunt is in labour."
"Delancey?" Elsa hummed. "Are you gonna go back to your dad's place?"
"After your wedding," I nodded. "I plan on moving there after your wedding. I haven't spoken to my dad about it yet. I'll let him know later."
"Moving?" Elsa questioned. "Like.. for good?"
I nodded.
"What about Warren?"
I shrugged before placing my hand on the knob when I heard another knock. My heart hurt at the idea of leaving Warren behind but I valued my father more than this one-sided romance. I pulled the door open and stopped in my tracks when I made eye contact with him. I looked away immediately.
"Juno," he said cheerfully, holding something in his hand. "Juno's friend."
"Eyebrow-piercing guy."
