EPILOGUE
"Thank you for helping us move these in," I said with a smile. "I hope it wasn't too much trouble."
It had been about three and a half years since Juno and I had started dating. It had been three and a half years since I'd asked him to be my boyfriend in front of that waterfall, on top of that mountain. Today, Juno decided, was the right day to move back to his hometown. He'd been contemplating the idea of doing so for a while and would regularly move back and stay in his father's place for a week or two. Upon noticing this, I suggested that the two of us move to his dad's place and Juno was more than happy to accept said offer.
"It's no problem at all!" Juno's dad, Andre, smiled. "I'm so thankful the two of you decided to stay here. I was afraid this place dissolve into dust."
"How are you finding the mansion?" Juno questioned, appearing through the front door with a cardboard box in his hand that looked far too heavy for him to carry. I rushed over to him and took it away from him so I could place it in its destination.
"It's lovely," Andre responded. "Doesn't feel entirely like home yet. Maybe it's because I'm not used to being surrounded with so much.. money."
I let out a laugh. I had met Andre and Delancey only a couple of times but they already felt like family to me. Juno opened his mouth to say something but the sound of light footsteps distracted us. I turned over to the door and my eyes met that of Juno's younger brother, Mpho, now almost four years old.
"Hey buddy!" I greeted him, bending down to his level and giving him a high-five. Juno, on the other hand, ruffled Mpho's hair and then made his way over to the door to greet Delancey. He gave her a warm smile before helping her with her bags, "Hey mom, it's been a while." He had begun referring to her as his mother a few months ago, but hearing it still surprised all of us. Especially Delancey. You could tell just how much that meant to her.
"Are you growing out your beard, honey?" she questioned, looking over at me. "It suits you."
"I just got a little lazy," I confessed with an awkward laugh before making my way over to her and greeting her with a hug. "It's nice to see you again, Mrs. Bardett."
"Are you all set then?" she questioned, noticing all the boxes. "Do you need any more help or is that it?"
"Oh, that's it for now," I nodded. "Juno and I will unpack later, we don't really want to be a bother."
"Are you sure?" Andre questioned. "We can always help, it's not too much to ask at all."
"No, Warren is right," Juno interrupted. "Plus, I could really use some fresh air right now. Those boxes did a number on my arms."
I let out a small chuckle before patting Mpho on the head - who had now busied himself with a roll of toilet paper - and promising Andre and Delancey that Juno and I would show up to their place for dinner later. With that, I raced out the front door after Juno who seemed to have a particular destination in mind. I didn't question where he was going because I trusted he wouldn't somehow lead me into a human-trafficking trap, though his silence was a cause for concern.
He finally breathed out a sigh of relief and stopped. I examined our surroundings. A park. Not just any park though. The same park where Juno and I had decided to willingly meet up instead of bumping into each other by chance. The park where he met Bruno for the first time. I couldn't help but smile. I glanced over at him.
He was smiling too. He turned to face me and reached out for my hand. I took his hand and placed a soft kiss onto the back of it.
"There's another place I want you to see," Juno confessed. "Do you have time?"
"For you, all the time in world."
-
He had taken me back to the lake that I'd shown him. The lake I told him I'd often visit with Devin. I didn't know whether to fall to my knees and cry at how much I appreciated Juno's thoughtfulness or gawk at him for even remembering the way to the area in the first place. I could just cry and gawk but that'd make me look strange, I figured.
"I've been thinking about this place ever since you brought me here the first time," he confessed in a low voice. "I don't know why.. but in that moment, with you here, I felt complete."
"You don't feel complete anymore?" I joked, reaching for my back pocket. His back was turned towards me as he faced the lake. The sound of the water embracing the rocks brought me back to the day I'd asked him to be mine. I couldn't help but smile to myself. I pulled out a small velvet box from my pocket and got down on one knee. His back was still turned towards me. The gentle wind made him look like he'd walked out of a portrait. Even from behind, he was absolutely stunning.
"I always feel complete with you."
"We've been together for four years now," I began. "And you've been nothing but kind and compassionate with me. I've never felt this.. loved before. I've never felt this complete. Ever since my parents died and ever since Devin died, I always assumed I'd be left to face the challenges this world has to offer alone. And then I met you. You who have changed my life for the better. Juno, I can't imagine a world without you."
"Me too, Warren," he whispered. "I don't want to imagine a world without you. I wouldn't dare think it."
"Juno," I whispered. "Turn around."
And he did.
He turned to face me and stepped back in surprise at the sight of me with a ring in my hand. His hand instinctively went up to his mouth and he whispered a curse word underneath his breath. I let out a chuckle at how adorable he was.
The wind pushed his hair away from his face. The birds began to chirp in a melody that made it seem as if they were serenading the two of us. There, in front of the lake, surrounded by dozens of trees whose leaves danced with the wind, I felt complete. With Juno, I felt so incredibly complete. I wouldn't want to share this moment with anybody else.
"Will you marry me?" I whispered.
"Yes," he nodded, his voice barely audible. "Yes I'll marry you, oh my God."
I shook my head in endearment at the look of pure shock on his face and stood up to slide the ring onto his finger. I held his face in my hands and pressed my lips up against his. In that moment, time slowed down. Our surroundings faded away into nothingness and in that moment, to me, only he existed. It was as if I was witnessing the final chapter of a book. A book that I'd grown to love. A book that I didn't want to finish just yet.
If you told me that the boy I met at a mall behind the customer service desk to request help with my now late grandmother's Kirby dentures would end up being the love of my life, I would've never believed you. But now, here I was, holding him in my arms, the both of us swaying to the song of the birds. I looked up at the sky as if to thank whatever higher power there was for giving me the purest gift that was Juno. Juno, the man who changed my life and would continue to change my life for the better.
Our eyes met. His dark eyes glistened underneath the dull sunlight being barricaded by the trees around us. I smiled down at the man that had made me nothing but happy for the past three and a half years. The man I'd soon be able to refer to as my husband. He who I happened to meet one random, yet special day. He who happened to be the first person I'd opened up to about my family. He who taught me to love again. He who embraced me for all my imperfections.
He who was my yellow.
