Chapter 12
"Are you alright Kathleen?" She asked, patting my hand.
"Yes, I'm fine, just a bit tired." I admitted. It seemed either very late at night, or very early in the morning. Yet these people were going to have dinner soon. Vampires are weird people.
"Oh, my apologizes! We tend to forget that people aren't used to our schedule. I'd give you one of our rooms to sleep in, but since you're new it will likely be best to just put you with the Jacobs. It's terrible, but until we get used to you it's the best place we have." The queen tilted her head in a 'oh-what's-there-to-do' sort of way.
I thanked her and she lead me back into the entry room towards the hallway across from the dining room. There were no doors, just a winding staircase going down. We went down, and entered a dungeon of sorts. The guard, who must have known what was happening, politely threw me into the same cell as Caleb.
"How you doing fluffy?" The guard taunted, laughing. His friends joined in, insulting and taunting the young werewolf. The queen had already ascended the stairs. Sighing, Caleb didn't respond, he only signed, looked me over, and went back to sulking in his corner.
"Okay," I started, annoyed with them, "I've had it with you pathetic freaks. Keep insulting him, and I guarantee that everyone of you will know exactly what it feels like to have a wooden stake impale your heart." The vampires immediately shut their mouths, and looked at me as if considering their options.
"You're in a cell though." The four taunters observed.
"Wow! You really must be bright! Shame that you all talk like you're superior. Not even the queen does that." I jerked the tables the other way, now taunting them.
"You don't honestly think that you're better than your royalty, do you?" Caleb questioned, catching on.
"They don't deserve to rule. Anyone can see that, even Kibbles over there." The taunters were represented by a red eyed, red tied man.
"Well then why don't you revolt? You do outnumber them." I incited. If they revolt, we can leave.
"Henry is the one that truly deserves to rule. That boy understands that the hierarchy needs to be changed." Their representative continued.
"You know what, here." A different man tossed me the keys, "take your friends and get out of here. You'll make a great vampire if you ever need a place in the world. Just wait until after we change the royals around." Smiling, the four vampires darted away, telling the others about their planned revolt. In minutes, they had an army climbing the staircase. There was a sound of swords clashing and the battle started.
"You're brilliant." Caleb praised. I unlocked our cell, going down the line until all the Jacobs were next to me. Right by the staircase, there was a little boy.
"Please let me out. I don't want to be a vampire." He begged.
"You poor thing," I unlocked his cell and he hugged my legs, "what's your name."
"Mathew," he said, "what's yours?"
"I'm Kathleen, these are my friends, the Jacobs. What do you say we get out of here? I may or may not have just started a civil war." I smiled as he nodded.
"Katie," Richard called, "is that why there is fighting upstairs?"
"I just love trouble, you know?" I smiled.
"Alright," Horatio took the lead, "let's see if we can make it out alive, shall we?" He climbed the staircase, finding a trap door locked.
"We came in from that way, didn't we?" Cormac questioned, walking the opposite way backwards. We followed, but Mathew kept tripping, so Caleb carried him.
There was a staircase that led straight outside with no locks. We darted outside, into Henry's car. The keys were in the visor, and car unlocked. Perhaps he had known we would need a car? Likely it was just a coincidence, but whatever. Caleb drove and Horatio was in the passenger seat. Caleb and Richard were in the same places they were in last time, so I sat in the middle. Mathew was clinging to Caleb. The car pulled out of the drive just as Henry darted outside. He smiled and waved from the porch.
He really had made sure we could get away, but why? I don't understand vampire logic, it's random.
"Caleb," Mathew muttered into Caleb's arm, "vampires are awful." Caleb laughed quietly.
"I knew that you were on my side," Caleb, noticing me watching him, ruffled the boy's hair, "go bother Katie." Following orders, the child sat on my lap. Cormac seemed to know where to go, because within minutes, just after our hearts stopped pounding, we were back on familiar roads. Horatio turned on the radio, and again Henry's song poured out.
"RUBBISH!" Richard yelled. Horatio shrugged and turned in off. Cormac adjusted the mirror so he could see me.
"How is your boyfriend doing?" My brother asked, smirking like a fool.
"Likely either king or dead." I replied, my voice cheerier than I thought it would be.
"You have a boyfriend?" Mathew questioned, looking up at me with an over exaggerated frown.
"No, my brother is teasing me about Henry." I consoled, and the child smiled.
"So I can be your boyfriend!" He exclaimed pleased with himself. Caleb laughed while the rest of the Jacobs just smiled.
"No," I corrected, Mathew pouted again, "You're too young. Besides, I like someone else." It's so secret, even I don't know.
"Why are you so mean? Caleb is my new friend. You can go somewhere and not come back until you will date me." The kid demanded, crawling back onto Caleb's lap.
"I don't do children." Caleb groaned.
"You are my only friend," Mathew decided, "and Katie likes either you or Henry, I can't tell."
"TEAM CALEB ALL THE WAY!" Richard yelled.
"No, I'm on team Henry, so..." Cormac trailed off.
"EXCUSE ME! I rather think that Katie like me better than both of them." Horatio sneered as if the others were inferior, despite one being his little brother. Well then... It seems I'm caught in a shipper war. This can not end too well.
"Why can't she pick whoever she wants? This isn't that one series where it's all vampire versus werewolf. Besides, didn't the chick choose the vampire?" Caleb made his point.
"Yes, she did, but that isn't the point!" Richard yelled back.
"Oh my god, do any of you have an off switch?" I questioned, fully exasperated with the fact that these people, who are supposed to be my friends and adopted family are being mean.
"See, I'm your only true friend!" Mathew decided for me. I rolled my eyes. Suddenly, cop sirens went on right behind us.
"You have to be kidding me." Cormac grumbled, pulling over to the side of the road. The cop pulled over too, and got out of his car. We all stayed still, checking seat belts and such, ensuring that there was nothing physically wrong.
"Do you know why I pulled you over?" The officer asked, leaning slightly against the car frame.
"No," Cormac replied, "but I'd love for you to tell me."
"The girl in the car with you," the officer explained, "has been reported missing from her home."
"We know nothing about that." Cormac claimed, glancing at Horatio.
"Sir, can you step out of the vehicle?" The cop requested, only it wasn't a request. Cormac obeyed, getting out of the car.
"You aren't going to arrest him, are you?" Mathew asked.
"Hush Mathew." I cooed.
"Is he going to take you away?" Mathew sobbed.
"No, we're just going to go back home. You can come with me if you want." I promised.
"Ma'am, the report from Mr. and Mrs. Jolon just say that you're missing." The cop said, searching Cormac. That's not my family, there is NO way I'm going with this cop.
"My parents must be mistaken," I replied going along with the role play, getting shocked glances from the youngest Jacobs, "my baby brother here came with me, and I'm sorry to say that if he's not coming, than neither am I."
"Yeah, you can't make me leave her." Mathew defended, grabbing my hand.
"Well then, I guess we're doing this the hard way. Sir,"the officer turned to Cormac, "you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to talk to a lawyer and have him present with you at all times. If you can't pay a lawyer, then one will be given to you before questioning if you want. If at any moment you want to not answer any statements or questions, you can do so. Do you understand these rights?"
"Officer," Horatio requested, "may I see your badge?"
"Sure," the officer said, "it's right here," Instead of taking out a badge, the man in blue threw a knife at Horatio, who ducked just in time, "I guess we ARE doing this the hard way." HE'S NOT EVEN A COP?! THIS IS ANARCHY!
"Surrender or we kill you!" Caleb yelled at the man. We were trapped inside the car you genius! How are we supposed to get to him? What logic is being used? Caleb logic isn't that sound. Sorry, but no.
"All we need is the girl. The rest of you can leave." The cop declared. The moon had come out, so that accounts for him not burning, but he should still be affected by something. We have to have an advantage somewhere.
"You can't have her." Horatio protested.
"Oh, I won't have her. It's Henry that requested her presence. Cormac, get back in the car."
"How about no." My brother replied snarkily.
"What if it isn't up to you guys?" I asked quietly. The last thing I want to happen is that someone gets hurt.
"You don't mean-" Caleb began.
"Yeah, I do. Richard, get out of my way." I demanded.
"I won't let you."
"Richard Jacobs, we've already had your mother die because of me. I'm not letting anyone else be killed. It's my fault. Move or I'll make you." I'm going to be the hero. This is my story, not theirs. I'm not letting another person die because of me.
"You aren't sacrificing yourself for us!" Richard yelled.
"Oh really, and why can't I? Who are you to stop me?" I shot. The boy who could see what I could looked me dead in the eyes.
"I'm no one. Just a random kid that possesses the same ability as you. The thing is though, Katie, that I care about you. And we aren't about to let some vampire rent-a-cop be responsible for you dying." Richard spoke quietly, whispering as if he was the one who was going to sacrifice himself. Before I could respond, we were frozen, and the eldest reached inside the glove box, grabbing a broken pencil, and threw it at the vampire. Time started moving just as the vampire burst into ashes. I'd completely forgotten about Horatio being able to manipulate time... I suppose his ability is well served here, although albeit anti-climatic.
"Take that you no good-" Horatio began.
"OKAY, if we can calm down just a little bit, that would be great." Cormac suggested, getting back into the car. The second his seat belt was buckled he hit the gas.
Ashes and dust mingled.
