Chapter 64: A Team Divided

(Two weeks later)

(Upstate New York)

Y/N's P.O.V

So it's been two weeks since the incident that happened in Lagos. And the morale of the Avengers is pretty low, especially for Wanda as she blames herself for what happened.

Myself and the other's have tried to help her but without Pietro here it's been pretty hard.

For the past month or so Pietro has been doing mission with Fury and Hill as they needed a some backup. We're not sure when he's coming back but it's been hard for Wanda since he's been gone.

I go to see Wanda to talk to her as over the past year she and I have become close. She's sorta become the little sister that I never got.

I stand in the doorway of Wanda's room to see her watching a new report about what happened in Lagos.

News reporter: What legal authority does an enhanced individual like Wanda Maximoff have to operate in Nigeria?

After hearing this I immediately switch off the TV.

Wanda: It's my fault.

Y/N: No. It's really not.

Wanda: Turn the TV back on, they're being very specific.

I walk over to her and sit next to her on the bed.

Y/N: Wanda, you did your best, no-one knows that better than myself and everyone else here. This job we try to save as many people as we can, but that doesn't mean we can save everyone. And if we don't find a way to live with that, then maybe next time nobody gets saved. You understand?

Wanda: Yeah.

I nod.

I then wrap my arms around her and give her a hug, she then wraps her arms around my waist and hugs me back.

Then Vision decides to phase through the wall.

Wanda: Vis, we talk about this.

Vision: Well, the door was open so I assumed... anyway Captain Rogers wanted Mr. L/N to know that Mr. Stark was here.

Y/N: Okay, thanks. We'll be right down.

Vision: I'll use the door this time.

Vision then walks to the door and turns around.

Vision: Oh and apparently he's brought a guest.

Y/N: Who is it?

Vision: The secretary of the state. Thaddeus Ross.

He then walks out.

I look to Wanda.

Y/N: Come on, let's go.

She nods and we both leave the room.

We go to the meeting and sit down with secretary Ross.

Myself, Natasha, Steve, Zach and Rhodey sat on one side. Wanda, Vision and Sam sat on the other. We then see that Tony is sat in a chair behind us.

Ross then explains to us how many people now see the Avengers as a threat given how many innocent people have died during the battles in New York, Washington, Sokavia and Lagos. He also tells us about the Sokavia accords and how where the Avengers are allowed to go will be decided by a UN panel and that the UN will be meeting in Vienna to agree to the accords.

Ross then leaves so that we can talk it over in private.

Natasha: And if we come to a decision that you don't like?

Ross: Then you retire.

Ross then leaves the compound.

I look at the other's.

Y/N: That man is probably the biggest dick I've ever met.

Rhodey looks at me.

Rhodey: Hey! Show that man some respect L/N.

Y/N: I call it like I see it Rhodes, that man is an asshole.

Steve: Enough. Come on, let's go talk about this.

We all stand up and head out of the room.

Myself and the other Avengers go into the lounge area and debate about the Accords.

Rhodey: Secretary Ross a metal of honour, which is one more than you have.

Sam: So let's say we agree to this. How long we got before they start LoJack us like a bunch of common criminals?

Rhodey: A hundred and seventeen countries what to sign this. A hundred anf seventeen Sam, and you just like "No, that's cool. We got it."

I then decide to speak up.

Y/N: Jesus Christ Rhodes how long are you gonna keep playing both sides for?

He was about to reply when Vision speaks up.

Vision: I have an equation.

Sam: Oh, well this'll clear it up.

Vision goes on to explain how our strength and enhanced abilities we have invites challege from other people and that brings conflict which bring catastrophe.

Rhodey: Boom.

Sam and I shake our heads.

Natasha: Tony, your being uncharacteristically non-hyperverbal.

Steve: It's because he's already made up his mind.

Tony: Oh, you know me so well. I'm actually nursing a headache. That's all it is Cap, pain and discomfort.

Tony goes up to get a cup of coffee then he pulls put his phone and shows us an image of a young guy.

Tony: Oh, that's Charles Spencer by the way. He's a great kid. Computer engineering degree, 3.6 GPA and had a floor level gig at Intel planned for the fall. But he wanted to put a few miles on his soul, before he parked it behind a desk. See the world. Maybe be of service. Charlie didn’t go to Vegas or Amsterdam like I would have. No he decided to spend his summer building housing for poeple in Sokovia.

We all look down realising that Charles Spencer was there the day we fought Ultron.

Tony: I guess he wanted to make a difference, but I guess we'll never know as we dropped a building on him whilst we were kicking ass.

Tony then moves towards us.

Tony: We need to be put in check and whatever form that takes I'm game. If we can accept limitations, if we're boundary-less than we're no better than the bad guys.

Steve: Tony, if someone dies on your watch you don't give up.

Tony: Who says we're giving up?

Steve: We are if we're not taking responsibility for our actions. This document just shifts the blame.

Rhodey: I'm sorry Steve, but that's dangerously arrogant. This the UN we're talking about it's not S.H.I.E.L.D, it's not HYDRA.

I then look to Rhodey.

Y/N: Yeah, but Rhodey, this thing, this document its run by people with agendas and agendas can always change.

Tony then walks closer.

Tony: That's good. When I found out what my weapons were capable of in the wrong hands, I shut it down and stopped manufacturing.

I look to Tony.

Y/N: But Tony you chose to do that. We sign this we surrender our right to choose.

I look at everyone as I continue.

Y/N: There's also the fact that we don't know if HYDRA is still within the government or not. How do we know these Accords weren't made up by the remnants of HYDRA? That's right, we don't.

Steve looks to me then back to Tony.

Steve: Y/N's right. What if this panel sends us somewhere we don't wanna go? What if there's somewhere we need to go and they don't let us? We may not be perfect but the safest hands are still our own.

Y/N: Damn right.

Tony: If we don't do this now, it's gonna happen to us later.

Wanda: You mean they'd come for me.

Vision: We would protect you.

Natasha: Maybe Tony's right.

I look at her in shock.

Y/N: I can't believe I'm hearing this right now.

Natasha: Look I'm reading the terrain.

Sam: Aren't you the woman who told the government to kiss her ass a couple years back?

I look at Zach.

Y/N: Come on Zach, don't tell me your buying into the bullshit?

Zach: Sorry bro, but I think signing this will be a good way to win the people's trust back. We have to sign it. Like Tony said if we don't do this now, it's gonna be done to us later.

Natasha: Look, Zach's right. Maybe this is how we earn the people's trust back.

Tony: Hold on focus up, I coulda sworn you just agreed with me.

Natasha: Oh believe me I wanna take it back.

Tony: No, no you can't retract it. Okay, cased close. I win.

Y/N: Look Tony you maybe conformable being the government's bitch, but I'm not. So I ain't siging that.

Steve then looks at his phone then stands up.

Steve: I'll be back in a minute.

He puts down the document and walks out of the room.

Y/N: Alright, I need to get outta here I can't be around this shit right now.

I leave the room too and head out of the compound to get some air and clear my head.
