Having a soulmate can be really useful, sometimes. Willow was getting ready to commune with hers on answers to a test.

Tapping the X on her wrist, she waited a second.

"Man, these mindscape classes are hard." Willow started the conversation.

"Good morning to you too, Darling." Her soulmate, some boy named Hunter, replied. "And mindscapes are easy, they reflect the person. You remember that and you pass the class."

"This is why I love you." Willow responded back, writing down what Hunter had said.

"Amity, what's up?" Gus had asked.

"That." She pointed to the edge of the cafeteria, where a small stage had been set up.

That is never a good sign.

Everyone watched Kikimora get onto the stage, and glare at everyone.

"We've gotten news of some anti-coven propaganda being spread around this school, so starting tomorrow, we will be placing guards— including the golden guard— inside the school as students. We already have a few, they will be joined." Kikimora explained.

Worried glances fell across the room. Who were the spies, who would be the new ones? And the merciless golden guard?

They were doomed.

--

It has been a month since that announcement.

Seats had been moved around in all their classes, and in her mindscapes class, she was now next to a boy named Hunter. He was in the potions track, he was tall, and he was rather intimidating.

But, he was kind to Willow, helping her in that class. He even offered to tutor her, though she declined because he was offering them at 1 in the morning. She could not say the same about him treating others besides her like that. Hunter was especially mean to Boscha and Amity.

Willow stumbled upon him being a jerk to Amity, and for once, Willow didn't step in right away. She was curious on how he was without her around.

"You're so pitiful, Blight. Threatening to tell everyone about me? And why would they believe you?" His gazed fell on her, judgemental.

"Luz would believe me—" Amity started.

"Luz is in the conformatorium right now, or if she escaped she's on the run. Who else?"

"Willow would." Amity came to a conclusion.

Oh, that made Hunter mad.

"If you tell Willow that I'm the Golden Guard, I'll personally assign you a seat to watch your girlfriend get executed." He threatened. "She's the only one out of all of you who likes me, and I don't want that to change."

Willow almost made a sound, but she covered her mouth just in time.

Luz, Eda, and King had disappeared just before they announced guards would be undercover. They'd all been looking for the trio, but no results. Now she knew why.

Okay. She was going to tell her soulmate about this. He always had advice, so hopefully in this situation he would.

She tapped the mark, waited just a second, and then gave her panicked message.

"Okay I'm scared and I don't know what to do, the nice guy I was telling you about? he's the golden guard. Advice???" She asked for help.

What surprised her was she didn't get the answer by the mind communication.

It was spoken in her ear.

"Maybe don't eavesdrop next time."

Then, she was tightly grabbed onto and teleported far away from Hexside.

Her and whoever had grabbed her were now in somewhere strange. The Royal Gardens of the Emperor's Coven.

It clicked pretty quickly that Hunter, her soulmate, was also the Golden Guard.

She didn't know how to feel as she was sat down on a bench and tended to by one of the most cruel and allegedly heartless people on the Isles.

Willow definitely didn't know how to feel when he hummed an "I love you", kissed her forehead, then said he'd explain everything in the morning.

She was confused, betrayed.

All Willow knew was she needed the whole story.
