Chapter 17: Stay - Biana Vacker

Biana Vacker

Where am I?

That's the one question that floods my thoughts as soon as my eyes flutter open.

I try to look around, but end up with a painful crick in my neck. From what I can tell, I'm laying down on a bed, in a place that I don't recognize but feels familiar all the same. There's a terrible taste in my mouth, like spoilt milk.

I sigh. I'm obviously not in the position to get up, so I may as well wait until somebody comes. I strain to remember what happened last night. The memory floats to me slowly. I faintly remember somebody saying, don't worry. You're going to be fine.

In a rush, the rest of the memory comes to me -- Adam, that moron, kissing Alyssa, and tripping on a rock, and hitting my head on that hard concrete, where I must've lied for a half-hour before someone got me.

I realize I'm not wearing my dress anymore, and wonder what has happened to it, pulling the covers up to my chin when the door creaks open.

I blink, wondering who it could be. When I see a bright flash of silver bangs, I'm surprised.

"Tam?"

Tam nods, and I ask, "Where am I?"

He grimaces. "Fitz is still out of town for his Orchestra trip, so I brought you to our house."

"Oh," I say, and Tam sits on the bed next to me. He's holding a spoon with some golden liquid. "What's that?" I ask, curious.

"Honey. It's to get rid of the taste in your mouth."

"How do you know?"

"When we got home, you puked, so I assumed that--"

I interrupt him. "You don't have a drivers license, right? How'd we get here?"

Tam looks away. "I carried you."

"Oh," I say again, suddenly realizing how close we are. Teal meets silvery blue, and I look away as I put the spoon of honey in my mouth. Tam's right, the terrible taste immediately goes away, replaced with a sweet syrupy one.

Tam stands up again. "I should probably go get--"

But this is happening all too quickly, and Tam is comforting, although things are awkward between us now.

"Actually, can you stay?"
