Chapter 14

Do y'all like the new cover?

--------------------------------------------------

As long as you don't tell them it was me. I give Peggy the side eye and start home.

Pegasus's Pov

After school the next day, we have a decathlon meeting to go to.

"As you all should know, our team has a meet in Washington D.C. this weekend," Mr. Harrison states. "If you can't make it, then you must notify me immediately." I looked at Peter, knowing he doesn't like leaving town because of patrols. He looks back at me then heads up to talk to Mr. Harrison.

"Mr. Harrison, sir," Peter starts. I can tell how nervous he is and I know how important this is to him, so I walk up there to be a good friend. "I can't-"

"What he means is I can't go to the meet. Peter has the Stark internship, but since this was so important to him, I asked Mr. Stark if I could cover for Peter and, after a little convincing, he agreed."

"Parker's even got you caught up in his charade, Peggy?" Flash says. I give him a glare that would scare a full-grown grizzly bear. He shrinks back under my gaze and stays silent.

"But Peggy, I'm sure Mr. Stark wouldn't mind the position being empty for a couple of days," Mr. Harrison tries.

"I'm sorry, but Peter needs to be more social, so I need to stay for him to make friends."

After Mr. Harrison realizes I'm not changing my mind, he agrees. After practice, I hear, You need to be more social, from Peter.

Real mature.  I fire back.

But I want to stay and do patrols. Plus, we have the Vulture, as we had dubbed him, to worry about. He argues.

I try to deal with him while you're gone.

Try? I give him a look.

Just go. If not for you, then for me, MJ, Ned, I smirk, and Liz.

You know about that?

I give him the 'really?' look. Of course I do.

Tonight on patrols, we find a glowing purple stone that looks like it's from the Vulture dude's guns. I grab it.

"Where will we put it?" Peter asks.

"I don't know. Study it in your nerd class or something."

"Peggy, you sit right in front of me in that class."

"Details, details."

Peter's Pov

Ned and I end up exploring with the orb thing. We can't tell what it is, but we'll find out Monday, I guess. Tomorrow we leave for the D. C. trip, and I'm excited but nervous at the same time. Peggy and I go on patrol together one last time.

Such a drama queen.

I SAID IT WAS DRAMA KING!

You gotta give me something.

Patrol is slow, only a couple muggings all night. I guess that's a good thing, but I've got to get my crime fighting for the weekend in because I can't do it on the weekend.

"We better head in, Spiderling," Peggy says. I groan at the nickname, remembering when Mr. Stark called me that and Peggy loved it so much she called me that sometimes.

"But I want to fight more bad dudes!" I whine like a child.

"Tough luck. The bad dudes are in bed, so we need to act like them for once."

"Fiiiiiiine," I grumble.

The next morning, I board the bus with Ned, and we review questions the whole way. My phone rings and I see it's Happy. What if the one day I leave, they need me for a mission?! Holding my breath, I tell Mr. Harrison that I have to take it, and head to the back of the bus. "Hey Happy!" I chirp. "Is there a mission?" I ask, hopeful.

"Nope. I just saw a blip on your tracker. Wondered what you were doing." Oh yeah. There's a tracker. In my suit. I need to use my brain more.

Yep.

Are you just extremely bored?!?! I ask, exasperated.

Pretty much. I don't have you to annoy so...

She's going to be the death of me.

Hey! But also true. And false! There is no right answer.

Oh. My. Lanta. (Do you guys get it? It's a Fuller House reference! I'll stop now)

"You still there, kid?" Right. Happy.

"Yeah, Happy. And I just forgot to tell you that I was going on a decathlon trip to D.C."

A pause. "Okay kid. Just checking." I let out a breath.

When we get to the hotel, Ned helps me hack my suit to get the tracker disabled.

"Dude. There are so many other subprograms disabled by something called 'The Baby Monitor Protocol'."

"What?!" Why would Mr. Stark give me a suit, then not really let me use it? "Disable it, Ned," I tell him.

"I'm not so sure that's a good idea, Peter. He probably put this in place for a reason." I climb on the bed and start hopping.

"I'm tired of Mr. Stark treating me like a kid!"

Ned looks at me for a few seconds. "There," he says after pressing a few keys.

"Thanks, Ned!"

The Vulture group is passing by D.C. tonight. You need to meet up with me.

I feel my eyes get wide. "I got to go, Ned!"

"TMI dude!"

"Ned! Not that! Spiderman has to be somewhere!"

"Is it the toilet?"

"Bye Ned!" I say, giving up on the conversation. I walk out the door with my backpack holding my Spider-man suit and decathlon outfit in case things run late.

"Hey, Peter!" I hear someone call behind me.

"Liz!" I reply. I don't need this right now.

"You want to come down to the pool with us? I heard a little rebellion before competition can be good."

"I was actually planning on heading down to the business center to study," I make up quickly.

"Come on. You're like the smartest person on the team! You don't need to study!"

"O-o-okay," I stutter, knowing full well I won't.

Liz gives me a big smile and leaves. That makes sneaking out this much harder.

Hurry up, would you? I laugh to myself and find a way to the roof. I put the suit on, but before I put the mask on, I find the pool and look down sadly. I guess this is the cost of being a superhero.
