One: The DJ Life

Elisse Anne

I tapped my foot to the music of Usher as I played the song request of one of our listeners here in Jive & Jazz. I have been a Disc Jockey for more than six months now.

I graduated with a degree in Broadcasting a couple of months ago and the radio station where I had my internship absorbed me in their company. I was utterly delighted and I gladly accepted their offer.

I removed my headset and turned off my microphone as I marked the song that was currently playing and skimmed through the list of songs I have tonight.

My shift starts at six in the evening and ends at nine. My segment was called Let It Out with Sean which is pronounced as Shaan. It's a combination of my 1st and 2nd names and as much as possible, I don't want to give out my identity.

That's what most DJs do. It's to protect our privacy too.

Also, a catchy name is an advantage for us and for the listeners.

I was known as DJ Sean The Party Hippie. Yeah. Even my college buddies tag me as that.

I smiled remembering our night outs during those days. I missed how terrible Ylona Hemmings was when drunk, how Duncan Stride looked so wasted and how boisterous I was after a wonderful night spent with them.

Suddenly, I was craving for some great booze.

While I was busy playing the next song by Michael Learns To Rock, I received a text message from jerk and I grinned when I read it.

Eli,
Am around your area. Want some thirst-quenching drink? 😉

I immediately typed in my reply and began fixing my things.

Glancing at the clock, I realized it fifteen minutes before nine in the evening.

Few more minutes of work and I get to bond with my friends.

At exactly nine in the evening, I was out the door and DJ Lowkey was starting his late-night segment called  Keeping It Low. He even joked about me being on the dot as always which I chuckled to.

In a span of twenty minutes, I am with Ylona and Duncan, sitting at the brown leather couch and munching on some nuts and having the time of our lives. I also acknowledged Giselle Whoops, our friend who barely goes out, tagged along with them.

She was drinking silently and constantly wiping her tears. I shook my head concluding she has been broken-hearted again.

"Hey, Gi." I called out and sat next to her. Duncan has taken over the microphone after punching over the numbers on the remote for his song.

Yes. I may be a partygoer but with a job to report to the next day, I would rather have a videoke night out with these peeps.

"Eli." She nodded at me and gave me a small smile. She was about to drink again when I got it from her and took a swig instead.

"What's the problem." I said than asking her. She kept silent and I blurt out the words. "It's Troy the bastard, right?" Her eyes widened at the sound of his name. "So, you have finally found out. The bastard has been cheating on you. Yet you learned about it just recently. Boy, I gotta owe it to the gossipmongers. The words haven't gotten into you yet? Or you chose to ignore the truth?"

"You don't have any idea what you are talking about!" She exclaimed to my face. I shook my head again. "Troy was just sad because we fought. But he never cheated on me!"

"Pretending not to be affected yet the truth is being slapped to your face? Fine. I have said my piece." I shrugged and stood up to return to my seat where Ylona was when she stopped my wrist.

"You don't have any right to meddle into our business unless I told you so!" Giselle said angrily.

I rolled my eyes and yanked my wrist away. I continued walking to where Ylona was and she welcomed me with a smile.

"Have you told her about it?" She asked and I narrowed my eyes. She knows I can tell truth straightforwardly to someone without batting my eyelash but the girl is stubborn.

"She is too stubborn for her own good. Let her realize it herself. I have dropped her my two cents." I said and grabbed the remote and punched on some digits from the songbook. "Just let me sing in peace. I will deal with her when she wants me to."

With that said, I cleared my throat and sang to the beat of Chandelier by Sia.
