Chapter Fourteen-Phone
Jenna
"Give me the truth. Now." Miri repeated.
I think I peed my leggings.
*Okay, okay, calm down. Jeez.* I wrote, still shaky from Miri's rage.
Miri's face immediately lit up. "YES!"
*You didn't tell anybody I'm a You-Know-What, right?* I was careful to not write the word in case if someone else sees.
Miri frowned. "No...but I might have accidentally called you 'Your Majesty' a once or twice before."
Alarmed, I quickly covered her mouth with my hand and made sure no one around us heard it. Luckily, no one else was around at the moment. I breathed a sigh of relief.
"Why don't you want anyone to know, though?" The question wasn't expected from Miri. "I would have happily ordered people people around all the time."
*No! It's not like that!* I scribbled furiously. *People are expecting you to be a role model, a great figure, a good leader, and who-knows-what twenty-four-seven!*
"Oh."
*But it's hard!* I could feel the tears coming. Shoot. It's not time for a pity-party. *How can I be a great ruler if I can't even scream, much less talk?*
"Yeah." Miri said slowly. "You're right."
My only response was grabbing the barf bag and making a very uncomfortable sound. Not. Pretty. At. All.
"Um, eww." Miri winced.
*Can I at least try to get up?* I didn't bother to wait for her response. I immediately stood up and took a few wobbly steps.
"Whoa there, missy. You're not going anywhere yet." Miri jumped up and grabbed my arm. "Nuh-uh. You sit right here until you get better. Speaking of getting better..." She grabbed a bowl from the nearby nightstand and handed it to me. "Carol said this should help."
*What is it?* I pointed to the sweet-smelling substance sloshing around the brown surface of the bowl. *It does smell nice.*
"Soup." Miri smiled. "It has herbs and it's made by..." She pointed to herself. "Yo." She beamed with pride. I'm not surprised that she spoke Spanish, as she always did whenever she is an a overboard-happy mood.
*Thank you.* I replied promptly.
"No problem. You should eat up now." Miri's smile grew bigger. "I have to call Ben and maybe Carol."
At this point, I was expecting her to stick her head out the door or something. So I was caught by surprise when she didn't. I continued to sip my soup as she crossed over to a funny-looking thing with a black screen, the whole thing the size of Miri's pocket. She glanced over and saw the question in my eyes.
"Oh this?" She pointed to the invention in her hand. "It's a teléfono, phone in English." She frowned. "Don't you have any at your palace?"
Good question, Miri, I thought. But I simply shook my head.
"Um, okay then." Miri sounded like she finds this weird. I don't blame her. The palace does have almost everything...except for a simple but extraordinary creation. Out of everything.
Just like how I am cursed out of everyone.
I think I lost my appetite.
