I just ditched my friends to go to the library. Because to be honest, I am frankly creeped out! But I have an excuse: I was almost shot and I have no freaking idea why.
Or maybe I'm freaking out over nothing. I mean, it was an invisible, supernatural figure that claimed it was me. However, that same figure seemed pretty physically there when we were in the kitchen.
"Um hello? Young lady?" I jolt when my shoulder is tapped on suddenly. I lift my head from the book I'm not even concentrating on to see an older woman, looking like a stereotypical librarian with the black round glasses and brown hair in a neat bun, set wrinkles etched on her face, and a hidden scowl despite the smile she gives me.
"Sorry dear but the library is closed now, you better be leaving soon. Okay?" Without letting me reply, she grips my arm to 'help' me get up, her nails digging into my skin. Thankfully, she lets go but just to hold her hand out signalling a person from coming in. Aasim.
"Young man, I was just telling this lady it's closing time. So if you could..." she gestures to the exit door for him to leave.
"Oh yeah but can I just talk to you for a second please?"
The librarian sighs but complies. She raises an eyebrow at me, subtly telling me to leave before going to Aasim. But curiosity and a dash of nosiness makes me hide behind the book shelves instead of obeying. Luckily, both Aasim and Mrs Landry didn't notice as the bookshelves block the view to the door.
"Mrs. Landry, could my little sister stay here please?" The librarian starts to protests but Aasim brings on the charm, daring to take both her hands and looking into her eyes desperately.
"Please, it'll only be for the night," he breathes out. Through the books on the shelf I see Mrs. Landry huffing and rolling her eyes. But then she purses her lips and places her hands on Aasim's shoulders reassuringly and gently squeezes them.
Tilting her head and smiling slightly, she permits, "It's okay dear, I trust you. I just don't understand why-"
He interrupts her with an abrupt hug. It seems to me, personally, that the hug was a way to avoid giving her an answer for something, or some mysterious explanation. To my surprise since she rarely shares a hint of a smile or any type of emotion, she hugs back and pats his back awkwardly before pulling away. Then again, when a women is strong, everybody thinks she's cold.
"Where is little Leyna?" Mrs. Landry asks wonderingly. Aaism's smile is wide with gratefulness and he stretches his hand out behind him motioning for his little sister to come. And she is not only adorable, she is gorgeous and looks incredibly similar to her brother. Mix-raced too of course, same brownish golden springs coming from her scalp, similar cyan coloured eyes except her right eye is more blue than green and a smile that is so innocent.
"Hi Mrs Landry!" Leyna greets enthusiastically. Mrs. Landry bends down to run forward and scoop Leyna up earning an adorable giggle from the little girl.
"You can both sleep in the back room for staff. I'm very sorry that it's uncomfortable but you will have to make do if you don't tell me the reason you have to stay here in the first place," she tells Aasim sternly.
To Leyna, still in her arms she says in a kindly nature, "Now I remember buying some cookies today..." and Leyna claps her hands in delight as the librarian walks over to her desk whilst listening to Leyna chat endlessly.
Meanwhile, Aasim is walking towards the exit which is close by me unfortunately. I quickly run to the other aisle but he suddenly pauses- probably hearing my footsteps despite how quiet I tried to be. I whisper a curse to these heavy school shoes I have to wear. It's almost like a dance how Aasim walks backwards and forwards trying to work out the suspicious figure sneaking around the aisles. I almost think I've won but then I realise that I can't see him anymore between the gaps of the book shelving. I panic and start to walk backwards and end up bumping into something then falling. I whack my forehead many times, inwardly scolding myself before finally looking up to see Aasim staring at me with an expression of anger, scepticism and amusement.
I trade him with a coy expression of my own and try to play it off by going into push ups. I am barely able to push myself up so my chest drops onto the ground creating an audible- and painful- thud.
"Are you okay dear?" Mrs. Landry's voice rings.
"Yes ma'am. I was just trying to reach for a high book but it fell." Aasim casually answers back. I can't tell whether it's impressive or suspicious that he can lie so well and quickly.
More embarrassed than ashamed, I get up myself then sprint to the exit. Not knowing that he was chasing me, I take a breather as soon as I'm outside and regret not doing my running laps at sports in school.
Suddenly, a hand presses against the wall beside me and I take a step back automatically when Aasim appears in front of me. His eyes, even more beautiful as they gleam in the night, hold me captive.
"Don't worry, we're even." he assures. When he notices my confused expression, he elaborates.
"You helped me with my-" he breaks of as if ashamed to say it before sighing and rolling his eyes but still whispers, "-my panic attack. And I didn't tell the librarian you were still there after closing hours. So we're even. Bye." And he starts to walk away.
My mouth moves before I can stop it, and my legs follow; fascination of this boy I met a very short time ago taking over. Or maybe I'm just scared of what I might encounter if I go home alone.
"Why were you there at closing hours?" I ask, already knowing the answer but trying to make conversation to reduce the awkwardness.
"Not to be rude but it's none of your business. And please stop stalking me," he replies as well as quickens his pace and I scoff even though I run to catch-up with him.
"I'm not stalking you."
"Then why are you following me?"
"I'm scared to walk alone at night," I state in an obvious tone despite my answer not being true.
"Okay but our houses are probably far away from each other," he says in a matter-of-fact but gentler tone.
"Then you could walk me to my house then go back to yours," I retort knowing it's selfish.
"Can't you just call your parents or something?" he says exasperated as we stop at a bus stop where he finally turns to look at me.
I shake my head. "Nope." I am lucky that the bus comes straight way because I am currently shivering due to the cold evening air.
I enter the bus with Aasim, pressing our bus passes then climbing upstairs to take a seat. My confidence allows me to sit next to Aasim. He saves me the embarrassment by not protesting. He twists to me, his eyes another shade now that we are in the bus.
"Fine. How about you help me get my sister Leyna and my things from my house. Then we go back to the library with them. Before I escort you back to your house." he offers.
"What! That's too much to do!"
"Well I have a lot of things to do!"
"Fine!"
"Good!" Aasim settles.
After a while, I feel a sense of déjà vu when Aasim's head droops onto my shoulder and he visibly falls into a slumber. I let him because even through all the beauty in his eyes, I could see- in fact I'm sure anyone could see- his fatigue.
But then later, I realised that I didn't even know which bus stop we would have to get off at. To wake him up, I softly tug at one of the curls of his hair. He groans then awakens, mumbling an apology as he does so.
I explain to him, "I didn't know which bus stop we would have to get off at."
He rubs his eyes sleepily. "Well thank God you woke me up because it's actually the next one."
We get off at the next stop and I quietly follow Aaism to the front doors of an apartment building. As we were approaching it, I realised that he was looking up and checking the windows. I feel more reluctant to go into the house because of this suspicious behaviour but he seems to let out a sigh of relief which minorly calms me even though I don't know what he is relieved by. He swipes something onto a black circle of paint on the door, rushes up the stairs dragging me along with him, unlocks the door to the apartment he lives in and rushes up his stairs with me running up behind him.
"Okay I've already packed my suitcase since I don't need much. I just need to finish packing Leyna's. While I'm doing that-" he pushes me into a room that looks almost empty despite the bed and usual bedroom furniture. But even the bed is naked other than a bulky red suitcase and bag resting on it.
"Bring those bags downstairs." he orders then runs to another room.
I study the walls of the room which are dirty, crusty and painted an ocean blue. The room is small, probably even smaller than an interns office.
Aasim bustles into the room with the same Barbie printed faces and her signature bright pink colour on three bags: a suitcase, backpack and travel bag.
"What the fuck are you doing just standing there!" he exclaims impatiently. I rapidly pick up his red bag and suitcase and follow him downstairs. Aasim carries all of Leyna's bags down with ease but I struggle with the only two I have. Once I finally make it down both staircases of the building, Aasim is tapping his foot impatiently and checking his phone.
"The bus is coming in 2 minutes. We can make it if we run, come on!" he hurries.
It is easier to rush with the suitcases having the wheels on the ground instead of the staircases so I am able to keep up.
The bus is there as soon as we get to the bus stop. The bus driver looks sceptically at us with our suitcases and bags and wonders if he should intervene, then seems to decide that whatever we teenagers are doing is none of his business. During the bus ride, I think about how I would have preferred if he did get involved. I am involved but I question why Aasim has to pack him and his sisters suitcases to leave home. At first I consider asking him, then decide to do it another time-if there is one.
After we get off at the bus stop and start walking in the direction of the library, Aasim reveals his plan.
"I'll figure out where to go in the morning. But for now, I need you are going to sneak into that back room Mrs Landry is talking about with all of these bags whilst I distract her. "
I suddenly regret helping him.
