"SO YOU FINALLY said the L-word," I grinned, "took you long enough."
I think I could mark this moment down as one of the best moments of my life. Not because Five finally figured out how to say a simple word, but because I clearly had an advantage over the conversation.
I felt like a powerhouse. Whatever I said in that moment was actually important. My voice was never treated like that for 13 years.
"How long have you been standing there?" Five stammered, his mouth open like a codfish.
I shrugged, "I'm not telling you."
"Debatable, but can we talk outside?"
"Why?"
Before Five could respond, I saw all of his siblings staring at us with large, beady eyes in interest. They were clearly eavesdropping, and so were the rest of the customers and the waitress.
"Nevermind," I laughed, "lets go."
Turning round, I pushed open the glass door and stalked out into the chilly New York air. It was already starting to turn to dusk, and the night life was already coming to full peak.
Five wandered out after me, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his uniform.
"I'm sorry," he said, coming to a stop, "for everything."
I cocked a brow in suspicion, "you can't be sorry for everything, Five."
"But I'm sorry for yelling at you."
"And?"
"Blaming you."
"And?"
"Running out on you...?" He mumbled, scratching the back of his head in confusion, "was there anything else?"
"And, for comparing me to a mannequin?" I smirked, "don't think I forgot about that one."
"How did you...nevermind."
He looked cute confused, his nose slightly pink, and his hair disheveled. I smiled. Neither of us were sure what to say. I wanted to just stay out there in the diner parking lot, but it was clear there were other things we had to do.
"Did you really mean it?" I asked, rocking back and forth, "what you said in there?"
Five glanced back up at me, "about the thing?"
"Yeah."
He nodded his head, "I do."
"You're not mad at me anymore?"
"I don't think I could be," he smiled, "I never knew love could do that to someone."
I opened my mouth to respond, but my eyes drifted towards the door behind us instead. Klaus, Diego, Luther, Allison, and Vanya were all creeping out in a single file line slowly. They were trying to be sneaky, but it couldn't be more obvious.
"Really?" I sighed, "you couldn't give us just one moment alone?"
Diego rolled his eyes, "it's not like we want to hear what kind of cheesy conversation you guys are having."
"It's not cheesy!"
"I still don't want to hear it," the man frowned, "but we have to go."
I tilted my head, "go where?"
"Home."
"Home can wait a few minutes!" Five exclaimed, spinning around in annoyance, "I'm literally trying to tell [y/n] I love her, and you guys keep getting in the way!"
All of us looked a little shocked at his sudden outburst, but that wasn't the end of it. As if it was timed, that familiar warmth started to tingle through my body, a faint light starting to glow from my chest.
Again?
"Woah, hey," Five said, running over to me, "what is it, are you okay?"
I glanced at the boy, and back at his siblings. They hadn't seen this before, so they were absolutely horrified. I bit my lip.
"Give me a second," I sighed, "this will look weird, but I promise it's not."
Pulling out the neckline of my shirt, I looked down at my chest to see what was going on. I wasn't sure what I expected to see, but then it all made sense. The arrow disappeared.
My birthmark was totally, and completely gone.
"Does she normally stare down her shirt?" Luther asked, "or does this have to do with the fact that she looked like a disco ball a second ago?"
Five hissed at the man behind him, "she's not a disco ball, idiot."
"Jeez, it was just a question," the man said, rolling his eyes, "that was it, mr. protective boyfriend."
Before the two would kill each other, I cleared my throat and looked back up.
"The arrows gone," I stated, "it completely disappeared."
Vanya scrunched her nose, "what does that mean?"
I forgot they weren't in my room when Five...embarrassingly found out about the birthmark. That was a good thing. Phew. But that also meant I had a lot of explaining to do.
"I had a birthmark in the shape of an arrow over my heart," I stated, "I didn't really understand it completely until what just happened right now."
Five leaned closer towards me, "what happened?"
"An arrow is a symbol for heartbreak, and wounds of love," I explained, "since I never had the chance to experience a love of my own, I had the arrow there. When I first told Five I loved him, half of the arrow went away. When Five said he loved me right now, the other half went away. Because both sides of our relationship had been fulfilled, the wounds were healed."
There was a moment of silence before they all seemed to catch on. It was so obvious, and I couldn't believe I didn't realize it till now. Maybe I just didn't care to.
"But wait," Allison interjected, "why didn't you start...glowing when he said it in the diner?"
"Because he didn't say it directly to me."
Diego rolled his eyes, "that's some freaky soulmate stuff."
"Soulmates don't exist," I said, "as I said before."
"Ah, right, you're the love expert."
"It's actually Cupid," I smirked, shrugging my shoulders, "but I prefer to be called [y/n]."
Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention that. My original name was Cupid (Dad wasn't very creative), but that faded away once I woke up from my coma. I liked [y/n] way better anyways.
"Welcome to the family," Klaus said, lifting the feather scarf up from his shoulders and handing it to me.
"And welcome to the Umbrella Academy," Vanya added on, "Sparrow."
"Actually, I'm not a sparrow anymore," I grinned, tilting my head in excitement, "I'd very much like to leave that word behind."
"Good," Five said, holding out his hand, "you won't be needing it anymore."
As I took his hand, I expected him to squeeze mine, but instead he lifted it up and planted a kiss on the back of it. That was nothing like Five at all. Then again, love does funny things to people, am I right?
Don't answer that, I already know I'm right.
Obviously.
As everyone began to join hands, we formed a circle in the parking lot, everyone muttering things under thier breath. Apparently this mode of transportation never really settled with them.
"We're going home!" Klaus cheered, "good, I need to make it back in time for Happy Hour."
Everyone laughed at that. As we all looked at Five for confirmation, he looked at me. He had a smirk on his face.
"Ready?" He asked, rubbing his thumb over the back of my hand.
I didn't hesitate before responding. I was finally going to a world where I knew I'd be loved. Where I knew Five would be. So, there was really only one simple answer:
"Ready."
