Sparrow

Chapter 1:

Name: Sam Peterson. Age: 17. Family: Mom, Simon (little brother) and Lizzie (little sister). Pets: Professor (dog). Friends... Correction, friend: Ace Bennette. Life: Well, this is my life...

Sam's POV:

I was going through a normal day in my life, which started with me waking up earlier than everybody (5:45 am), getting Simon and Lizzie's clothes ready, getting ready myself, helping Mom with breakfast, dropping Simon at school and Lizzie at Daycare, going to school, where I was presently. Ahead in my day was my part-time job at Starbucks, picking up Simon from soccer practice and Lizzie from Daycare, going home, doing the laundry and other house chores, doing homework, helping Simon with his and playing with my little siblings till Mom got home, helping Mom with dinner and the post-dinner dishes, reading before bed (if I wasn't too tired and if I had time), and finally, sleeping. Next morning? Repeat.

The bell rang, indicating the end of my History class. I walked into the hall and was walking to my locker when someone bumped hard into me with the intention that I would drop my books. Their intention failed as I just stumbled forward and continued walking normally.

"Watch where you're going, Peterson!" a jock shouted over his shoulder.

"I could say the same thing to you, Cross!" I shouted back, knowing EXACTLY who the jock was. He stopped walking and turned to face me. He had a nasty snarl on his face and I returned it. He walked towards me. I stood my ground. When he came close enough...

"Yo, Cross! We don't want any fighting in the hall, alright! As for everybody else? Get to class!" I smirked as the school prefect shouted out. Everybody began dispersing. Cross, or should I say Derren, snarled at me further.

"You're lucky he's your friend, Peterson," he said.

"Best friend," I corrected him. I heard a chuckle from behind me. Derren looked behind me and walked away.

"You should get to class too, Sam," I heard the prefect say from behind me. I turned around.

"You know I'm never late for class, right Ace?" I stated, smiling at my best friend. He smiled back.

"I know. I'm just following orders," he said. I nodded.

"Thanks for having my back, buddy," I said. Ace gave me a side hug.

"As always, huh?" he joked. I made a face at him, causing him to laugh.

"Aaaccceeee!!" I whined. He chuckled and hugged me tighter.

"You're welcome, Sam. You know that," he replied. Then the bell rang and he gently pushed me ahead.

"Get to class, Peterson," Ace said, smirking at me. I looked at him over my shoulder.

"You're lucky, Bennette!" I called out. I was at the end of the hall and I heard Ace laugh.

"I know!" he called back. I laughed as I entered my French class. Ace didn't have any more classes for the rest of the day whilest I had three more classes. Well, two more if you excluded French. I had a busy life. After school finished, I crossed the back field to get to the front. Unlike other schools, ours had a HUGE archery shooting range in its back field. I loved sitting on the steps and watching students give their shot at archery. Sometimes, it was hilarious! Good thing that the arrows didn't have steel on their tips, otherwise someone would've gotten hurt by now.

"Move aside people! The champ coming through!" I rolled my eyes as I saw one of Derren's friends introducing him as he entered the field. Some people, mainly Derren's friends and the POPCORNs (Popular Corner Kids), cheered and applauded for him. The girls of POPCORN started drooling over him and it took a lot in me to not throw a book at them and ruin their hair. I did that once and boy, it was hilarious! Ace and I could NOT stop laughing. The reason why Derren was called the champion was because he was the best at archery in the entire school... Or so he thought.

"Here he comes to wreck the day!" Ace sang from next to me. It caught Derren's attention, causing me to laugh and I high-fived my best friend and gave a extra sweet smile to Der... Oh for goodness' sake! I'm just going to call him Cross... To Cross, annoying him. He walked off to the range and pushed a few kids out of the way to his 'usual' spot. He's an absolute jerk! I shook my head and focused on the other archers. One of them missed the target board and Cross, along with his sidekicks, started laughing at him. Anger started building up inside me. I had seen enough of those jerks making fun of others. Furious, I threw my bag onto the floor and looked at Ace, who was looking at me with a surprised expression.

"Cover me," I said and walked towards the range before Ace could say anything. I didn't have to look behind me to know that Ace was following me. We had been friends for enough time to know each other as well as we knew ourselves. Walking up to Ross, the kid who had missed the target board, I put my arm on his shoulder, causing him to look up. He smiled slightly.

"Oh hi, Sam," he said quietly and continued to look down.

"Don't let Cr... Derren get to you, okay?" I said.

"What am I supposed to do? He's stronger than me. If I protest, he would hit me," Ross replied. I took in a deep breath and looked at Cross, who was getting ready to shoot an arrow at the target. He released the bow and, as always, didn't miss. The girls of POPCORN went wild! I sighed.

"Ross, can I please borrow you're bow and arrows?" I asked him. He looked up and nodded. He handed them to me. The moment my hand wrapped around the bow, I felt a very fimiliar boost of confidence shoot into my body, a feeling I missed dearly. I counted the arrows and there were enough for what I intended to do. I strapped the leather bag containing the arrows to my back and secured it tightly. Looking down at the bow, I smiled and after taking in a deep breath, I looked at Cross.

"Yo, Cross!" I shouted, catching his attention. He looked at me, surprised but composed himself with a smirk.

"Well, well, well! If it isn't Samantha Peterson trying her luck at the sport of archery," he announced mockingly. I didn't react to that.

"Shoot," I said in a serious tone. He looked a little taken aback.

"What?" he asked. I took a deep breath again to compose my anger.

"You heard me, Cross. Shoot," I repeated. He smirked at me.

"As you wish, Peterson. If you want me to show you my skill..." he started.

"JUST DO IT, CROSS!!" I shouted, causing the smirk to fade off of Cross's face. He snarled. After fixing an arrow into the bow, he released almost immediately and hit the bull's eye. His friends cheered. I smirked at him.

"Very good, Derren. Very good, indeed... For a beginner," I said, shocking Cross.

"What did you say to me?" he threatened.

"Sam..." I heard Ace whisper from behind me. I met his eye and he calmed down, knowing that I knew what I was doing.

"You heard me, boy," I replied to Cross.

"You think you can do better?" he challenged. I chuckled.

"No... I KNOW I can do better," I replied and a lot of laughs and 'ooh!'s were heard from around the range. Apparently, the whole school was watching but I couldn't care less. I had a point to prove and that was what I was going to do. I stepped onto the platform and took out an arrow. Fixing it into the bow, I aimed at the target board in front of me. I glanced at Cross and smirked. I changed the direction of the bow and released. It hit Cross's board in the bull's eye, knocking the arrow that Cross had shot to the ground. I didn't stop but reloaded the bow and shot another arrow to the target board in front of me, reloading and shooting at ALL the board's and every arrow hit the bull's eye. All I could hear were cheers all around me but I just dropped the bow and remaning arrows to the ground and walked away, grabbing my bag and walking out of school.
