Chapter 3
"SAMMY!!" Lizzie squealed when she saw me. I grinned and lifted her as she ran to me. She started squealing in delight as I spun her around. I thanked Mrs. Colton, the owner of the daycare, and we four walked out and started walking towards home. Ace's house was across mine and he came along with us. When we were almost at our doorsteps, I noticed three men in black suits standing in different places near my house. Not again! I was spotting them for the third time now! Who were they? What did they want? I didn't make it seem like a big deal as I kept my face straight and laughed at all of Ace's jokes but my mind was somewhere else. I just HAD to find out who they were... And fast...
The next day, I did my normal routine and after I dropped Lizzie and Simon off at Ace's housing with the excuse that I had to go help Mom with some stuff, I headed back to the house to 'grab a few things that Mom needed'. In reality, I had spotted the suited men again, in the same spots near my house, and went inside to get ready for a... Conversation with them. I definitely needed answers. If they were on the good side, then well and good but if they were BAD... Then I needed some... Precautions and they came in very effective form: WEAPONS. After sneaking a peak at them from the window of my room, I went downstairs and secured all doors and windows. Coming back up, I did the same. Then, I entered my room and went to stand next to the bookshelf. I took in a deep breath and slowly removed a few books from the left hand side of the second shelf. I looked at the empty space that I had just created and stopped. I looked again at the suited men and frowned. Was it just me or did their distance from my house just decrease?
My heart beat quickened as I turned back to the bookshelf. I took my shaking hand up to the side of it and pressed firmly. The wood rotated and was replaced by a holder, in which were two small rod-like bars made of what looked like steel and had a button in their centres. I carefully took them out of their holders and clutched them in my hands. They should have felt cold under my skin but they didn't. Instead, they were warm and felt like a pulse was moving them. I clutched them tighter and took in a deep breath. They gave me the strength I seemed to need... Like Grandfather had said they would when I needed them the most. I placed them in the back of my jeans, next to my back and covered them with my shirt. I locked up the house and slowly walked out to the front lawn. Pretending to put on my wristwatch, I glanced at the suited men to find them not there anymore. I furrowed my brows.
"Where'd they go?" I muttered. I got my answer as my eyes caught their black cars disappearing down the road.
"Not this time, my friend," I muttered before taking off, running as fast as my feet would let me. I followed the black cars as they took a turn to the right and I skidded to a halt, hiding behind a bush just in time. They didn't catch me. I started running again...
They were heading out of the town but I kept running. I had a feeling they knew I was following them but I STILL kept running... Running to my answers... To my trap... Only God knew...
