“Its not here.” I felt my voice falter as I closed the chest, shutting it and locking it back up. I glared at the wooden frame of it, staring and letting my gaze wander along its hinges and buckles. This only angered me further, and I stormed out of the small temple.

I felt two gazes upon me almost instantly. The green one was Nash, the purple one was Viper, and they were of the smallest species of dragons. They were big enough to ride on, but not made of much muscle used for power in battle. Yet, despite those who laughed at my choices, I had picked these two for a specific reason. It was a well known fact that I was a damn good archer, and I knew what I was doing. A big clumsy dragon would be much harder to maneuver and control mid flight, versus a smaller dragon that could dodge, and could accelerate better than any other dragon breed. I rode Nash a lot, letting Viper ride alongside us so that she could move barriers and clear our way. She was the smaller of the pair, but her name was given for her quickness and her spirit. Nash was a big brute, the older brother and the mean only when Viper or I are threatened. Otherwise, he is benevolent and docile, as most creatures are.

They ride with me wherever I go, and we span the world, looking for treasures and helping those that we can along the way. Its an interesting life, being more or less of a wandering being, and we learn and see sights that not everyone gets to see. We’ve battled creatures that people only see in the fairy tales written by those who have only heard the stories, and my eyes have beheld the most beautiful places that our world has to offer.

Yet, now, as I stormed away from the temple in the jungle, I felt like more of a weary soul that was ready for a break. The temples, hidden within large biomes and tucked away, carry many secrets. One of these is supposed to be an ancient dragon scroll. No one remembered exactly what it does, but even the dragons get nervous when they are near it, or get excited when someone mentions it. It contains great power that many say only a pure soul can use and wield properly.

Unfortunately that soul was the Dragon Priest of the last village that I had gone to.

He had heard rumors of a being riding twin dragons, and helping anyone they met. He immediately requested that I stay, and threw a huge party and feast in my honor. Despite how flattering it may have been, I had only gone to the village in search of a place to stay for the night. The nocturnal creatures of this world pay no heed to strange visitors, and aren’t afraid to show their claws; better to find shelter. However, my brain instantly reeled at the thought of being the one to rediscover the magical scrolls for the dragons, and the Priest insisted that I help his village find it. When Nash and Viper get the news, they made sure damn good and well that I had to be the one go and find it.

As a rider, it was my natural duty to help others, and I also enjoyed myself when I did so. However, as the journey went on, I noticed some peculiar things. Though I have helped villages find lost treasures before, not a single one of them had given me a date that it needed to be found by; the Dragon Priest did. It needed to be found in a couple days from where I was now, saddling up Nash and climbing atop of him. As we began ascending, I realized that the day he wanted that scroll was the day of the Dragon Festival, a ceremony specifically made for the reptilian creatures that we respect and love so much.

Why would someone want to have something with so much power on a Festival day celebrating it?
