A New Friend

Your pov,

I grabbed my bag and skipped my way down the stairs, humming softly as I was ready to grab some breakfast and go to school.

"Dad, I'm off to school," I said aloud, walking in the kitchen to greet my father. But there was no sign of him. A small blue note on the fridge caught my attention as I head towards it to grab some juice.

---------------------------------------------------------

Hey honey,

I've gone out on an emergency trip after I've got a call from the company last night. I'm sorry, I didn't get to tell you this, but I'll be back after a few weeks. Be good and have fun at school until then.
Oh, I made some sandwiches you like and left them in the fridge.

Eat them before you head to school.

P.S. If Troy bugs you again, remember to use the moves I taught you.

Love you and see you soon.

                                                  Dad.

---------------------------------------------------------

*sigh*

"I love you too, dad," I said and smiled before grabbing the sandwiches from the fridge and ate them. Chucking down some water, I put on my shoes and headed out of the house. Making sure to lock the house, I saw Jenna passing by from the corner of my eyes, "Hey Jenna!"

"Hey (N/n)! You coming?" I heard her said as I put the keys in my purse.
"I'll catch you up in a sec!" I said, turning to her with a smile. "Kk!" she replied and continued to walk her way towards the school.

Just as I was about to head out and was passing by my dad's car, I heard something came flying in my direction. "Hey. Look out!" I heard someone yelled and looked up, catching a can that came flying in my way with one hand just in time.

I looked to see a guy with blonde hair and a bright orange tan, wearing a green shirt and a red jacket. He was staring at me with an extended hand which let me figure that he was the one who kicked this little can. I chuckled at the cute expression he was making as I held my hand down.
"Easy there, tough guy. Better to show your skills at the gym class rather than here," I said and walked down towards the pavement while he laughed nervously and walked up to me.

"Haha, sorry about that. That was a pretty nice catch back there by the way," he said.
"Thanks. I've been practicing some sports lately. So, uhh... going to Hubert high, perhaps? You must be new here since I haven't seen you around before," I started, throwing the can in the dustbin we just passed by and he smiled, "Yea. I just moved here actually so, I guess it's kinda my first day."

"Cool. My name's (Y/n). (Y/n) (L/n). But...you can just call me (Y/n) or whatever you want," I said with a shrug, and he chuckled. "Haha, (Y/n) then. Umm...I'm Duncan. Duncan Rosenblatt," he said, extending a hand for me to shake which I did casually. He seemed surprised by my action though.

"Pleasure to meet y-"I stopped when a silver Jeep stopped just beside me and Duncan, honking loudly at me and a bunch of guys screaming loudly while saying my name.
"Whoo! Whoo! Yeah, (Y/n)!"
"Looking good, (N/n)!"

My mind mentally screamed "Not again" when I noticed that the driver was none other than Troy, the king of Herbert High school who goes after girls whom he assumed as 'easy' when he's not with his on and off girlfriend or should I say, one of my friends, Jenna. And apparently, he and his fellas have picked me. I can't believe we used to be childhood friends, looking at him now.

"Yo, (N/n), want a ride?" Troy asked flirtatiously and I literally forced up a smile on my face, trying to seem polite while Duncan rose a brow, watching them trying to flirt with me.

"Good morning, Troy. And no. I prefer to walk safely to school while peacefully chatting with my mew friend here. Thank you very much," I said and Duncan looked slightly surprised at my words before a smile made its way onto his face, seeming a bit amused.

Troy scoffed and glanced at Duncan with a mocking grin.
"Oh, I am sorry. I didn't see you there. I thought I was looking at some bird crap near (Y/n), now I can see it was just your face," Troy said and he and his gang laughed, making Duncan narrowed his eyes while I glared at them. That guy...how dare he? I hate it, I seriously hate it when he insults people like that and strangely, I felt even more angry than I usually do right now.

Duncan was about to say something, but I beat him to it.

"He's not a mirror, Troy. Just mind your business and get lost!" I said, making Troy look back at me. "(Y/n), baby, you can't be serious. Trust me, a guy like him ain't what you need. Look at him, he's got-"

I can't do this anymore.

"Okay. Okay. Listen to me. First of all, I know what I need in my life and I don't need you to tell me what I need. Second, Duncan never asked for your opinion. Neither did I. He's perfectly fine with the way he looks. And I'm a sixteen-year-old woman who can perfectly take care of herself and who never was your baby! Now, start your car, take a map and move along! Come on, Duncan. We don't want to waste our precious time on the charmless over-confident people," I said and casually grabbed Duncan's arm as I started dragging him with me while I walked away from Troy's car.

I heard some noises and yelling which I didn't give a care to listen as I continued to walk towards school while keeping my arm around Duncan until Troy's car drove past us with a tires screech.

I sighed in relief and let go of Duncan's arm, giving him an apologetic smile at the same time
"Sorry I dragged you into Troy's nonsense on your first day, Duncan," I apologized, but he smiled and shook his head as the two of us continued to walk.

"Nah, it's not your fault. Jerks are drawn to me instinctively wherever I go. I am actually kind of used to it by now," he said with a smile that hints sadness. I frowned for a second and then smiled at him, deciding to cheer him up. "Well, I guess I could relate with you. But I'm sure you'll meet some cool people here. A perfect chance to make some new friends," I said and he let out a dry laugh as he turned to look away from me.

"Right. Friends. No offense, but I'm not the kind of guy who makes friends so easily," he said, making me pout as I stepped in front of him and looked straight into his amber eyes.

"So, I'm not your friend?" I said and he looked taken back by surprised as he blinked.
"Um...N-No. I-I mean yes! It's just... I am not used to with people standing up for me. It's kind of cool that you did though. I wouldn't have pegged you for the feisty type," he said with a smile while rubbing the back of his neck with his hand.

I smiled and moved aside as we started walking towards the school again, "Well, I am the kind of girl who loves to speak my mind. I guess you might say it doesn't suit me, but that's just the way I am."

"What? No. It suits you a lot. In fact, it's kinda cute actually," Duncan said and froze, realizing what he just admitted. We both blushed and looked away, flustered. Somehow, his words made me smile happily and had me feeling giddy on the inside. I chuckled nervously and looked back at him.

"Well...we better get going. We don't want to be late on your first day now, do we?" I asked, giving him a small wink and he chuckled as we started chatting around here and there.
After a few minutes later, we walked into the school building, still talking about random things and getting to know to each other. A few people greeted at me while I smiled and waved them back in return. Then, I noticed Duncan looking around at everyone who passed by with a cold and distant look. He really must've had unfriendly situations to put on his guard around everyone. But so far, I know for sure that he's a decent guy who's actually nice and friendly.

"Hey...relax. No body's gonna bite you. And besides, I got your back," I said and Duncan smiled a bit as he relaxed a little. Just when we reached to the hallways and was about to turn left, Jenna appeared and bumped into Duncan by accident, causing all the coffee to spill over Duncan's shirt. "Ugh!" "Hey!"

I gasped while Duncan growled and tried to wipe the coffee off of his shirt. His eyes narrowed and his eyes snapped towards Jenna, "You're so-!" he started, but stopped as his jaws dropped.

Oh, I know that look. Here it comes again. But...Jenna was carrying a really hot coffee and it just spilled on him. And Duncan seems...fine. How come he's not burning though?

"So...hot," Duncan said, staring at Jenna. I sighed and shook my head. Of course, it wasn't a surprise. She got the looks. She's popular. Everyone here loves Jenna. His words drew Jenna's attention and their eyes met. "I, uhh...the coffee," Duncan said and laughed nervously as he pointed at Jenna's cup, "I meant this coffee is...so hot."

"Oh, I'm so sorry!" Jenna apologized as she started babbling about her coffee while Duncan listened awkwardly. I chuckled and nudged his arm lightly, giving him a wink. "Break a leg," I said and waved at him before I started walking away towards my locker.
But then, I saw Troy walking in my way, with his eyes fixed on me. He grinned, knowing that I have spotted him. I couldn't help but let out another frustrated sigh. Just great.

Why does my locker have to be at downstairs?

I guess this means I better take my shortcut instead of the stairs. I grinned and turned back, taking a few steps back. I smiled at Duncan who glanced at me before turning back around as I started running at full speed towards the rail and jumped to the ground floor, landing perfectly and safely on the floor. It wasn't that high, and I was pretty athletic myself so, this was just a piece of cake for me. I watched Troy growled angrily at my little stunt from upstairs as I laughed and casually walked away towards my locker, eyeing at some of Troy's lackeys, Big Rob, Steve and Whitey, who have been unusually hanging around near our lockers too much from the corner of my eyes. I heard them whispering something about Jenna's locker which was close to mine. What are these no goods up to?

Normal pov,

While (Y/n) continued to walk towards her locker, she didn't know a certain orange skinned boy was left stunned and amused by her little stunt as his eyes stayed at the spot where she was a few minutes ago. Jenna raised a brow and turned to where he was looking and smiled knowingly, having a guess about what happened while she was apologizing and what is going on in Duncan's head. "She's interesting, isn't she?" she said and Duncan smiled, still staring at the spot, "Yea..."

What an interesting feisty girl, he thought, smiling when the image of her smiling at him appeared in his mind.

After a moment or two later,

"I'd like to ask the whole class to give a warm welcome to Duncan Xerxes Absalom Belphegor Grezel Pythius Wu Fan..." Ms. Dreakford introduced while Duncan stood there, awkwardly smiling as he was introduced to the class. His eyes met with (Y/n)'s who was sitting in front of the class, next to a girl with brown hair. She smiled and waved at him warmly which Duncan smiled and returned the friendly gesture, his posture becoming more relaxed.

Your pov,

"What's up with you and the new guy?" my best friend, Isabel asked, with her brow raised as she looked at me, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. I chuckled quietly and shrugged my shoudlers, "He's just a new friend I made today."

"Uh, yea. Just Duncan is fine, Ms. Dreakford," Duncan said, smiling nervously as he turned his attention back to the teacher.

"Oh, all right. Take a seat, Duncan," Ms. Dreakford said, setting down the attendance log and extending her hand out as a friendly gesture for him to sit down. Duncan nodded and walked away from her, looking for a place to sit. I was about to call out towards him, but Isabel beat me to it. "Hey, Duncan. Sit here with Kenny. He doesn't have a lab partner," she said, pointing to the desk behind us where Kenny was sitting with a grin while I chuckled. Kenny rolled his eyes in return, muttering a sarcastic thanks to Isabel.

Duncan smiled as he waved at Kenny and walked towards him, "Hi. Duncan," he introduced himself. "Ken Rogers," Kenny replied, he awkwardly glanced at us which I gave him an encouraging smile, really wanting the two of them to get along. "Kenny Rogers, huh? Do you know when to hold them, know when to fold them?" Duncan asked, starting a friendly conversation with Kenny while I turned back to my notes. "Someone's having a little crush~" Isabel teasingly whispered to me, making me roll my eyes as I laughed and nudged her arm lightly, making her chuckle.

Ms. Dreakford soon comes around, dropping off the trays of frogs at each desk as she spoke, "Like reptiles and insects, amphibians are ectotherms and cannot internally regulate their body temperature... This is what we used to call cold-blooded." She dropped the last tray by our desk
"Why did we stop? Did the amphibians object to being labeled "cold-blooded"? Isabel said and there was a few laughter from the back of the class. I smiled and shook my head.
She has a point while also on the other hand...

"No, Mrs. Dreakford. This is so wrong for so many reasons," Jenna spoke as she stood up and started complaining over how wrong it is to use frogs as lab subjects, crossing her arms although the teacher keeps telling her to zip it. I admired her for speaking out bravely at these kinds of things. A sigh escaped from my lips as I looked down at the tray of frog in front of me. She was also right too. This is indeed one of the animal cruelties issues and one of the reasons why I hate biology classes because it just felt wrong when it comes to this. I shook my head and glanced to see the frog on Jenna's tray only to be greeted by an unexpected surprise. I gasped when I saw that it was a little Gamorradon getting up from its sleep instead of an unconscious little frog that was supposed to be on the tray! The little Gamorradon slowly leans into bite Jenna's wrist and just as I got up to warn her, "Jenna-"

"Aah! Oh, no! They're waterboarding Kermit!" Duncan suddenly yelled from behind, causing everyone to turn their attention towards him.

"Duncan?"

Everyone gasped as they all looked at Duncan who started jumping and moving around, carrying the trail, "He's a jumper! Look out!"  I don't know he has suddenly started acting out like that, but whatever he was doing, it successfully stopped the little creature from biting Jenna's hand.

Not a few seconds later, Duncan tripped over himself and caused the frog on his tray to fly out, bumping into Jenna along the way, but what caught my attention was how he intentionally bumped into Jenna and covered the tray the little Gamorradon was in with his now empty tray, dragging it along as he fell down.

Wait, did he just...? It can't be, can it? He knew? Is that why he did that little freaked out dance intentionally?

...

...

...

Huh, that's actually a pretty, smart move. I gotta admit that.

Meanwhile, the class laughed at his little stunt while Jenna glared down at Duncan who groaned softly. "Are you done? What is up with you? You make Troy look mature," Jenna scolded at Duncan who smiled sheepishly. Suddenly, there was a loud ear ringing noise, making everyone closed their ears out of agony, "Stop it! Settle down, everyone!" Ms. Dreakford yelled, scraping her nails on the board. Ugh! What a nail! How come it's not broken yet with that powerful scratch?!

Just then, the bell rang, signaling that the school has called it a day. Everyone started leaving the class while I headed over towards Duncan who quickly hid the little Gamorradon in his jacket.

"I can't believe that jerk!"
"And I actually thought he was kind of cute until he did that."

"You okay, Duncan? Seems like you hit yourself pretty hard doing that little dance," I asked, helping Duncan up who sighed and nodded. "I'm good," he said, smiling at me.
"Nicely done, man," Kenny said, walking up to us. "Just don't mention it, all right? Bad joke, that's all," Duncan said and started heading out of the class. And I immediately grabbed my bag and followed.

"I'd say that was a pretty smart move rather than a bad joke, Mr. Xerxes Absalom Belphegor," I said playfully as I walked beside him after giving a piece of note to one of Jenna's friends and asking them to pass it to Jenna since I knew the girl was gonna meet up with her in a minute or two. Duncan rose a brow at my words. "How come? I was pretty sure you must be thinking I'm an idiot for that," he asked, looking at me with a hint of surprise and I shrugged. "Well, I admit that I might have if I didn't know you. But for real, it may have seemed kind of dumb, but you just saved Jenna from getting bitten by that little friend you have in your jacket there, didn't you?" I said and Duncan looked at me with an astonished expression while I smiled at him innocently.

"I know I'm-" before I could finish my sentence, a frog from our biology class was thrown at Duncan's head, causing him to growl.
...
...
...

We both turned to see Troy and his group, snickering at Duncan. I growled, immediately knowing that it was Troy who threw the frog at Duncan, "You're a living proof that a human can live without a brain, Troy!" I said and grabbed Duncan's hand as I started walking away, pulling him along with me. "Come on, Duncan. The closer we are to them, the higher chances we might get infected." Once again, Duncan looked surprised, but nonetheless smiled and said nothing as he followed me.

"Evolution should've killed those guys out of the gene pool eons ago but-" I started.
"Cockroaches have remained unchanged for millions of years," Duncan finished with a sly grin as he slid his hand into his jacket's pocket which makes me chuckle before looking up back at him. "Not bad. How's that little guy doing in there?" I asked, motioning to his jacket and Duncan smiled, pulling a finger to his lips, "Shh...Keep it quiet. It's between you and me, okay?" He looked around, making sure no one is around before he grabbed my shoulder gently and pulled me aside behind the wall.

We knelt down and Duncan slowly took out the little Gamorradon from his jacket. My eyes widened when he opened his hands and showed me the little creature.

"Wow. It really was a little Gamorradon," I said, and fascination came over me as my eyes met with the little Gamorradon's ones. Duncan smiled, "It's kind of like a little tiny Kaiju," he said. "If I remember it right, this little fella and his friends are called a Gamorradon. They live on bigger Kaijus and scout and warn them of danger, I suppose," I said and Duncan looked at me surprised once again.

"What's it doing here and how come you know all of this?" he asked with a smile, and I shrugged, "Well...I have a best friend who's a huge fan of monsters. It's Isabel. You know the girl who introduced you to sit beside Kenny. And I learned some from the books. Oh, watch it. Whatever you do, don't-!" before I could finish my sentence, the little creature grabbed Duncan's thumb and bit it hard, causing Duncan to yell in pain, "Ow!"

I gasped as the little Garmorradon jumped past me and escaped.
"Let it go," I finished my sentence as I looked after it while Duncan got up from his spot and started chasing the little fella. I smiled watching him chase around the little Garmorradon who was running around fast. Eventually, it jumped away to its escape and Duncan fell down which caused me to giggle at his adorable behavior. Duncan looked back at me and chuckled as we both got up and walked towards each other.

"So, Duncan, is someone picking you up or do you want me to join me on the way back home?" I asked and he smiled as he nodded. "Sure. But how about you? Is no one going to pick you up?" Duncan asked.
"Well, usually my dad would when he's around, of course. He took off on a business trip last night. He isn't around very much, but he tries his best to spend some time with me," I said smiling as I think about how grateful I am to him.

"What about your mom? Any your siblings?" Duncan asked with a look of curiosity. I shrugged. "Got none. As for my mother...I can't say much because I never knew who she was," I said and Duncan frowned as he scratched the back of his neck nervously with one hand.
"Wow. I'm sorry to hear that. I mean I know how bad it feels to grow up without one of your parents around...I grew up without my dad around too," Duncan said and it was my turn to frown. I smiled and decided to cheer up both of us.
"Wow, we really have so much in common although we just met today. I guess you and I are meant to be friends after all," I said and a smile appeared on Duncan's face as he nodded. "Yea. After meeting you, I'm starting to think that it's not so bad here after all," he said, making me smiled. "See? I told you, you will like it here soon?" I playfully said, making him laugh.

My house was not too far away from our school, so it came into the view not after a few seconds later. "If I am not wrong, this house is where you live, right?" Duncan asked as our eyes met once again. I smiled and nodded, happy that he remembered. "Yep. How about you, Duncan? You live around here?" I asked and he nodded, "Yea, just two houses down the street from here is where I live with an orange SUV. I guess we're not only friends, but also neighbors, huh?" he said, making me chuckle.

"Haha, yea. Feel free to drop by whenever you want to hang out or if you need me. I am always around," I said. Taking out a piece of paper, I quickly wrote down my number and handed it to him with a smile. "Or you can call me anytime you want if you ever needed someone to talk to as well or if you want to hang out," I said and he smiled as he took the paper, "Will do."

I smiled at his response and patted his arm gently as I turned to leave.
"Well, I suppose we part our ways here then. See you tomorrow, Duncan?" I asked, glancing back at him. "You got it. And...(Y/n)?" Duncan said with his amber eyes taking a hold of my gaze once again. "Hm?"

"You can come over to my house anytime you want as well if you umm... ever needed someone to talk to or want to hang out sometimes. My mom is there too, of course. Ahaha. But... I am always around as well," Duncan said with a smile and I felt my heart skipped a beat at that smile.
I'd be lying if I say I didn't like that feeling though. I smiled at Duncan happily, cupping a few strands of my hair away behind my ear.

"Sure! See you tomorrow, Duncan! Bye!" I said and waved at him as I watched him smiled and waved me back before I went into my house.
