Under Pressure; Season 2 Ep. 1

Kate groaned to the sound of her 7am alarm. She lived in the same apartment as her brother, Evan "Buck" Buckley. She forced her eyelids to open wisely and sat up to stretch. She stood up and put on a blue sweatshirt that was on her armchair. She left her bedroom and walked to the kitchen.

"Evan Buckley, it's 7am! Wake up" She shouted from the kitchen so her twin brother could hear her.

Buck left his bedroom and yawned, waving in a cute and sleepy way making Kate chuckle.

"Good morning, sis!" he greeted.

"Morning, Buckaroo." she greeted back. "You've got 2 minutes to get ready or I'm leaving without you." she said as she ate her breakfast, smiling playfully.

"Wow, nice way of greeting someone who just woke up." he said sarcastically and walked back to his bedroom.

------------------------------------------------------------

"I go another DXA scan and guess who dropped another half percent" Buck said to Hen and Bobby as he and Kate walked into the fire station.

"What?" Hen asked.

"His lastest love." Kate joked as she stood next to Hen.

"A DXA scan measures your body fat. You can see your percentage in every part of you body." Buck said after shooting a 'haha, very funny' look to Kate.

"Oh, yeah? They measure the fat in your head?" Chimney joked as he waled towards them with food in his mouth. Kate has to bite her lip so a laugh doesn't escape her lips.

"Ah, see, that would be funny, but we're about a week away from submissions due for the 'Hot Days, Smoldering Nights: Men of the LAFD wall calendar', and I'm already at my goal weight, so it seems like my head is clearly working perfectly." Buck said proudly. Kate rolled her eyes and Hen shock her head.

"Do you really need to use that whole title? You could just say 'That idiotic, reductive, sexist calender that insults dignity of this organization and furthers the myth that all firefighters are male" Hen said.

"Yeah, I like that title better" Kate said before fist bumping Hen's fist.

"Yeah, that's not any less words..." Buck said, nodding his head.

"Guys, come on, it's for charity" Bobby said.

Kate and Hen turnde their heads to face Bobby's and Hen said:

"No, Bobby, you too?"

"Well, why not? They say a man is at his sexiest when he reaches 50." Bobby said as he saw Kate's head shake.

"Is that what they say? That's what they say?" Hen asked in disblief.

"Okay, you're both wrong. All right? I think sorority houses all across this great nation are ready for a new Asion sex symbol. It's our time" Chim said. Kate smiled.

"I think it's great, you know? I like that you're both going up for it." Buck stated.

"Oh, because you don't think that we have a chance." Bobby said confused.

"Whoa, did I say that? I mean, sure, let's be real. They are only picking one candidate from each sation." Buck said.

"Okay, That is a beautiful man." Chim said as he looked at a man in the loocker room putting on an LAFD shirt.

"Where's the lie? And I like girls." Hen said as she also saw the man.

Kate turned her head to the direction her best friends were looking at. Her mounth opened sli ghtlyas she watched the man. She closed it quickly so her teammates wouldn't see it. She thought the guy was pretty beautiful. Kate thoughts snapped out of her mind when she heard her twin ask.

"Who the hell is that?" Kate laughs a bit at his brother's jealousy.

"It's Eddie Diaz. New recruit. Graduated top of his class this week. Guys over at Station Six were dying to have him, but I convinced him to join us." Bobby explained.

"What do we need him for?" Buck asked.

"He served multiple tours in Afghanistan as an Army Medic. Guy's got a Silver Star. It's not like he's wet behind the ears" Bobby explained. Kate's expression changed to a surprised expression. "Come on, I'll introduce you to him. He likes to be called Eight Pack." Kate laughed.

"Wow, Silver Star" Hen said, making Buck even more jealous.

"I know right?" Kate says as she looked at Buck's jealous and confused expression and smirked.

"Better drop some more body fat here, Butch" Chim joked.

They walk into the locker room and Hen greeted with an "Hi". Bobby starts to introduce them.

"Eddie this is Hen. Hen, Eddie."

"Nice to meet you" Eddie greeted.

"This is Chim"

"Hey there" Chim greeted.

"And this is Kate"

"Hi, welcome to the 118" She greeted with a bright smile on her face.

"Hi, thank you." He said kindly.

Eddie had to pause for a few seconds. That was a beautiful woman right in front of him. Her eyes were beautiful, her hair was long and blonde, her smile was gorgeus... Eddie snapped out of his thoughts when he heard the bells of the fire station.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The way there was pretty calm until Chimeny spoke up.

"So, Silver Star, huh?"

"Yeah." Eddie responded.

"You save a platoon or something?" Chim asked.

"No, no nothing like that. Uh, just a convoy"

"Eddie, huh, you heard about the hot firefighter calendar?" Hen asked before shooting a playful smirk to Buck. Kate looked down at her hands so Buck wouldn't notice her small laugh, which he did.

"Sorry, the what?" Eddie asked confused.

"It's for charity" Kate said. Bobby laughed in the passengers seat.

"So is your full name 'Eduardo'?" Buck asked to change the subject.

"No" Eddie simply responded.

"I would've guessed 'Edmundo'" Kate said.

"Yeah, it is. Most people don't get that right..." Eddie said, impressed.

Kate shrugged and smiled.

"People ever call you 'Diaz'? Buck asked again.

"Not if they want me to respond" Eddie anwsered.

"Something's got to give. We got... we got Cap, Hen, Chimney, Kate, Buck. We can't just call you 'Eddie'." Buck saed. Kate looked at him with a confused expression on her face.

"Can't tell if he's being serious or not." Eddie said.

"No one can." Kate joked.

"Yeah, I like to always operate under the assumption that nothing he says is serious." Chim joked as well.

They all laughed and Buck just turned his head away in annoyance.

----------------------------------------------------

They arrived at the scene where they found the employee who lead them to where the man was.

"The air nozzle is embedded in his ass cheek. I shut it off, but I was afraid to move him." the employee said.

"Okay, Hector, can you hear me?" Bobby said to the immobile body. "Okay, just hang in there, buddy. All right, let's get him on his side. Maintain pressure on the wound. On three. One, two, three." Hector screamded and Bobby quickly said "Okay. Easy, easy."

"It's a hundred pounds per square inch of air pumped throught his entire body." Buck read.

"Breathing's shallow, heart's racing" Kate said.

"Air's filled his stomach, chest, even behind his eyelids. I'm more concerned about the space around his heart and lungs" Hen said as she examined Hector's body.

"Okay, Eddie, start a nasal cannula. Chimney, get him some morphine." Bobby gave them the instructions.

"I'm on it." Chimney said. "It's like trying to inject a needle into stone." He said as he tried to inject the needle into Hector's arm.

"The pressure's pushing everything out." Eddie explained. "I can't even get air throught the nostril"

"Jugular venous distention, tachycardia, hypotension, diminished breath..." Hen said while thinking but Kate cut her off.

"We're looking at tension pneumothorax."

"The air pressure is collapsing his organs, We need to get in there and drain the fluid. Buck, I need you to get a 14-gauge aigiocath. We need to start decompressing the pleural cavity."

"All right, all right." Buck said calmly.

"Want me to help?" Eddie asked.

"I got it." Buck said in annoyence. Kate looked at both of them for a second before looking back at what Buck as trying to do.

"Hang in there, Hector." Bobby said.

"I'd go lower" Eddie said. Kate looked back up at them.

"What? Um, no. Second intercostal space. Midclavicular line." Buck explained his reason.

"The chest wall is thinner at the fifth intercostal at the anterior axillary line. There's a decreased change of injuringany vital organs. I've- I've treated guys with collapsed lungs in combat." Eddie explained.

Buck looks at Kate before looking at Bobby who said:

"Do it."

Buck looked back at Kate who nods. She looked at Eddie and then at Buck again.

"Please. Thank you" Eddie says. Buck looked at his twin who was already looking down again. "Can you help me out with the shirt?" Eddie asked Buck who opened Hector's shirt after sighing a little.

Eddie injected the aigiocath and the air started to escape Hector's body. His breathing getting calmer.

"That's it Hector. Breathe, nice and slow." Bobby reassured.

After getting Hector transported, they started to get ready to get back to the fire station.

"That was a good call, Eddie." Bobby said.

"Thanks, Cap." Eddie thanked.

"Nice job." Chim said to him. He nodded in a thakful way.

"Yeah, good call." Buck said. Eddie just watched him get into the fire truck until he heard Kate's soft voice.

"That was great! Nice job, probie." She said softly.

"Thanks, Kate." He smiled. He lookd back at Buck. She looked at Buck and then at Eddie again.

"Hey, don't mind him, ok? Sooner or later he'll get over it. That's how he works." She reassured him.

"Yeah. You guys seem like you're great friends." Eddie said.

"Oh, no. We're twins. I know it doesn't look like it, but we are." She said. They start getting into the fire truck after Eddie said a little "Ah".

------------------------------------------------------

Buck walked into his apartment. Kate told him to go inside while she parked the car. He put his bag on the floor. There was a glass of wine on the table. He also saw women clothes on Abby's bed. Of course he thought she had come back. He took his shirt off and walked into the bathroom taking his pants off. He opened the curtain to see Maddie, his older sister, having a shower. They both screamed.

"Oh!" Maddie screamed.

"Maddie?" Buck asked confused.

"Damn it, Evan! Don't you knock?" Maddie asked also confused.

"Me? What-what are you even doing here?" He asked.

"Well, I was in town and I wanted to see my little brother and sister." Maddie explaied.

"Well, you did, see me, not Kate." He said innocently.

"Yeah." She said. There was an awkward silence before Buck spoke up.

"Well, I should probably... tell Kate."

"Okay." She said as she closed the curtain.

"Okay" he repeated before getting dressed again to go tell Kate, who had just entered the apartment. "Kate! Kate! You're not going to believe who I just saw showering!" Buck said excited.

"Woah, who?" She asks confused.

"Maddie!" He said.

"Okay, that's a little weird." She said. Buck nods in agreement. "But really? Maddie's in town?!" She asked, now excited to hear about her older sister.

"Yep!" he said. They went to the kitchen and waited for Maddie to finish showering.

They ended their night by talking about what they had been through while Maddie wasn't in LA and she told them what she had been through. She had finnaly left the nasty and disgusting Doug, who neither both of her siblings liked. Maddie will stay on the same bedroom as Kate so no one sleeps on the couch.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The next shift Kate was doing push ups and Buck was lifting weights. Eddie came into the gym zone. Kate smiled at him when she stood up to stretch. Eddie smiled back and started hitting the boxing bag. When Buck saw that, he went to get more weights. As Kate noticed this, she rolled her eyes and so did Chimney who had just got into the gym zone. Buck picked up his phone and started taking selfies of him and his muscles. Eddie saw it and said:

"You're in the wrong light, man"

"Some of us don't need lighting to look good." Buck snapped in which Kate rolls her eyes again.

Chimney stopped his workout and asked "Hey, Eddie, what do you mean by 'the wrong light'?"

"The light in this room is flat and blue. Makes you look soft. If you want to look lean and muscles to pop, you need warm and side light. I'll show you." As Eddie said this, he grabed his phone. Kate stopped scretching and joined Eddie and Chimney to look at the pictures Eddie sent for the calendar. "These are the ones I sent in for the calendar." he explained.

"Wow, these are good." Kate said.

"Thanks!" He said as he smiled.

"It's, uh, kind of cheating, submitting pictures by a professional photographer." Buck said. Kate and Chimney looked at each other with the 'seriously, Buck?' look.

Eddie chuckled and said "The photographer is 12. She's my niece. She's a master at the iPhone filters."

"Your niece did this?" Chimney asked surprised.

"Yeah." Eddie said proudly.

"You think she'd be willing to take my submission pics for me?" Chimney asked and Kate smiled, seeing Chim so happy for such a stupid thing. "I'm told I photograph like a Asian Fabio"

"Sure she would, yeah. Yeah" Eddie said. Chim smiled and nodded in a thankful way.

"Ah, you know, you souldn't get his hopes up like that. No offense, Chim." Buck snapped.

"Serioulsy, Evan?" Kate asked and shock her head.

"No offense taken." Chim said sarcastically.

Kate and Chim went back to their workout and Eddie walked towards Buck who was lifting weights again.

"What's your problem, man?" Eddie asked.

Buck takes a few seconds. He stood up and answered:

"Okay, you. You're my problem. Your comfort level. You're-you're not supposed to just walk in here like you've been here for years." As Buck said this, Kate rolled her eyes and Chim shock his head. "It's meant-meant to be a getting-to-know-you period. You're meant to respect your elders."

"You're not his elder, Buck." Kate said.

"Look, I in no way meant to, uh, be too familiar or step on anybody's toes. I know you're going through some personal stuff right now." Eddie defended himself.

"What personal stuff?" Buck asked.

"I know your girlfriend recently broke up with you and you're coming to terms with that." Eddie said. Kate stopped stretching and picked up her bottle of water.

"No, I'm not. And she didn't break up with me." Buck said. "Who told you that?" He turned around to see her twin drinking a lot of water.

"Hmm, this water is exceptionally good today." Kate said looking down at her bottle.

Eddie smiled and said. "I'm just saying I hear you're a good guy, and... I'm sorry you're going through pain, but... you don't need to take it out on me, or-or be threatened by me. We're on the same team."

"Why would I be threatened by you?" Buck asked.

"Exactly. There's no need to be. We do the same thing. I've just done it while people are shooting at me is all." Eddie explained and left the gym zone.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The next emergency they got was at a man's house. Buck and Bobby got into first, making Eddie, Kate, Hen and Chim to wait outside. Apparently, a bomb had exploded inside the house.

"So, where are you from?" Hen asked to make the time pass quickly.

"El Paso, Texas." Eddie said, looking at Hen.

"Is it usualy hot there?" Kate asked before widening her eyes, embarrased at the question. Hen must've noticed as Kate shot her a 'help me' look.

Eddie chuckled. "Well, it depends on the season. LA is clearly better."

Kate nods before seeing Bobby and Buck. "Oh, there they are." She walked towards the gurney.

"Buck, Kate, I want you to travel with him to the hospital, keep him stable." Bobby said.

"All right." Kate said without hesitation and entered the ambulance standing next to Eddie who is also travelling with them. She focused on the man on the gurney instead of the akward question that would hunt her that night.

"Copy that, Cap." Buck said after sighing.

"Hey, you got to learn how to play nice. It's one team, Buck." Bobby said.

Kate sighed and said. "That's what I've been telling him."

"Hey, Nash, am I gonna be all right?" Charlie asked.

"My team has got you." Bobby said. "But you might want to consider switching to collecting baseball cards after this." He joked in a serious way.

On the ambulance, they keept Charlie stable. The way there was pretty quiet, until Buck decided to speak up.

"I guess you've see a lot of shrapnel wounds." Buck said.

"My share." Eddie simply said.

"You ever seen a guy with a lenght of a rebar stuck trought his skull?" Buck asked which made Kate roll her eyes.

"What are we measuring here, Buck?" Eddie asked which makes Kate smiled a bit to herself.

"Need to change those dressings. They're soaking through." Kate said to Buck.

"Hang in there, Charlie. Almost there." Eddie said.

"I'm just saying, working the streets of L.A. is not exactly stress free. May not be the same kind of pleasure you have in war zone, but..." Buck said.

"Enough, Evan." Kate cut him off.

"Oh, come on. Hold on. I thought you said this was a practise round." Eddie said concerned about something. Kate stood by his side to see his thigh.

"It is." Charlie said.

"Uh, what-what-what's going on?" Buck asked concerned and confused.

"You see the cap?" Eddie asked.

"Oh, my god..." Kate realises. She had been reading a lot of 'Military magazines' which explained things about all kind of grenades and war guns and stuff. "Practise rounds have blue caps." she said.

"Yeah, gold caps are live." Eddie said. "Pull over!" He demanded.

They pulled over and parked in a big parking lot. The bomb squad team had arrived.

"Yup, there she is." Jim, the bomb squad chief said as he pointed to the screen with and X-ray of Charlie's thigh.

"He's got a live round embedded in his thigh." Bobby said.

"Uh, I thought this thing already went off." Buck said.

"The lauch grenade has two components." Kate started.

"Gunpowder which makes it travel and an explosive charge that makes it go boom." Eddie finished. Kate nodded.

"Okay, so why didn't this one go boom?" Buck asked.

"It's fitted with a proximity fuse." Eddie explained.

"It's-it's a little smart sensor that tells the cap it's travelled a safe enough distance from the shooter to explode. From his hand to his leg probably wan't far enough." Kate finished. Eddie smiled surprised and Buck lookd confused.

"How come you know so much about this?" He asked his twin.

"I don't throw away every single paper that appears in our mail box." Kate explained.

"Well, we can't bring him inside a hospital full of people, not with that still stuck inside him." Bobby said.

"We called the military for help." Jim said.

"The military? Uh, can't you do it? You're the bomb squad." Buck asked.

"We can't diffuse a grenade. We need to find someone who knows how to pull that thing out of him without setting it off." Jim explained. "They're sending someone up from Pendleton. Should be here within the hour."

"He doesn't have an hour." Kate said impatient.

"I can do it." Eddie said. Kate turned her head quickly with a worried expression. "If he doesn't go to surgery soon, he'll die." Eddie explained.

"You've done this before?" Bobby asked.

"Well, none of my guys I served with were dumb enough to shoot a live round in themselves, but I'm familiar with the ordnance." Eddie explained.

"I'm in." Buck said. Kate turned her head to him.

"No, you're not. You know nothing about this." She said worried.

"Let him." Bobby said as he put his hand on Kate's shoulder.

She looked away and after a few seconds, she eventually let him, but nothing keept her from getting worried. Not that she didn't trust Eddie, because she did, but it was still dangerous for both Buck and Eddie.

They were given instructions to put the cap inside a box. Kate is leaned against the wall of the ambulance. Buck and Eddie started getting in when they heard her voice.

"Try not to die." She joked in a serious way.

"We'll try." Eddie said which made her smile a bit and walk towards Bobby.

After a few minutes of anxiety, Kate couldn't take it anymore. They were taking too much time and that was concerning. But they managed to get out safely. The whole team sighed in relief when they saw Eddie and Buck leaving. They transport Charlie to the hospital. Buck walked up to Eddie and they started talking. Maybe they'll talk thigs through, Kate thought to herself while watching them.

"You're a badass underpressure, brother." Eddie said to Buck.

"Me?" Buck asked proudly.

"Hell yeah. You can have my back any day." Eddie said and smiled.

"Yeah. Or, you know, you could... you could have mine." Buck said and smiled as well.

"Deal." Eddie says.

As Bobby and Kate watched this, they walked towards them.

"Nice work, fellas. I'm glad you both made out of there." Bobby said.

"I'm glad you didn't die." Kate said as she had a smile on her face and tapped Eddie's shoulder.

"I told you we'd try." Eddie said while smiling as well.

"Yeah, the guy's a professional. I was never really worried." Buck said, proud of his new friend. And after he says this, the ambulance exploded, making them all jump, Kate hiding behind Eddie and standing next to him again as he laughed a bit. They all looked at Eddie. Bobby and Buck confused.

"You guys hungry?" Eddie says 'innocently'.

------------------------------------------------

The day after, they got called to a different (really different) emergency. A kid had his head cemented on a microwave. One of his friends went downstairs to talk to Chimney.

"Quick, they're in the back. We put a tube in so he could breathe. I think the cement smushed it." The friend said.

"What is it, a Youtube prank?" Chimney asked confused.

"Don't judge. Followers equals cash." The friend said.

They walked upstairs to the backyard, where there were two kids, one with the cemented head and the other who was there with him.

"What's his name?" Bobby asked.

"Jessie." The other friend, Mitch, said.

"Jessie, this is Captain Nash, LAFD. Can you hear me?" Bobby asked. He got no response. "All right, he is totally cut offin this thing. Let's get some screwdrivers, try to get this frame off."

They started using the screwdrivers to take the frame off.

"What do we got, Hen, Kate?" Bobby asked.

"Pulse 120, BP 150/110." Hen said.

"He's panicking." Kate said.

"All right, he's starting to choke." Bobby said.

"Saliva's probably aspirated through the breathing tube." Hen said.

Suddenly, Jessie got up from his seat. They all tried to calm him down, but he fell into the pool. Eddie and Buck immediately jumped in action. They took him out and put him on a gurney.

"His pulse is weak." Kate said.

"I have no respiration." Hen said while examining his lungs with the stethoscope.

"Is there a plastic bag in there or something?" Chim asked.

"Yeah, we put it on his head before we poured the concrete. Please don't let him die. He's my best friend since kindergarten."

"Well, next time don't cement his head on a microwave." Kate muttered. Eddie nuged her am with as he fought not to let a laugh escape his mouth.

"Can't get in there." Chim said.

"Yeah, we had 30 minutes to get him out of there. Now we got 30 seconds."

"No response to sterbal rub." Kate said as she rubed her hand through Jessie's ribs.

"Pulse is fading. Still no respiration." Hen warned.

"All right, Buck, once we get this frame off, you and I are gonna go hammer and chisel on that block." Bobby said.

"Starting compressions." Chimney said as he started doing compressions on Jessie.

Once the frame is off, Bobby uses the chisel while Buck uses the hammer. They started breaking the cement box. They finally managed to get Jessie out of the cement. They keept doing compressions until Jessie started breathing again. He coughed and exhaled sharply. Out of nowhere, Mitch took his phone out and started recording the scene.

"Hold still, hold still. Shay Reed here, fans. And today's Shay-nanigan is maybe our most intense yet!" Mitch said.

Bobby turned his head around to see Mitch recording.

"Are you filming this?" Bobby asked surprised.

"Yeah, bro. If we didn't film it, it didn't happen." Mitch said.

Bobby stood up. Kate and Eddie had a disgusted and judging face towards the boys who were filming.

"You were just crying like two minutes ago." Buck stated.

"Yeah, two minutes ago, he was gonna die. Now he's gonna live and be a legend." Mitch said proudly. "Say hello, Shay's army." He said to Bobby.

"Hello, Shay's Army." Bobby said. He grabed Mitch's phone.

"Wait... what the hell, man? What are you do..." Mitch said but before he could finish, Bobby threw the phone into the pool.

"Goodbye, Shay's army." Bobby finished.

"Dude!" Mitch yelled.

The whole team looks at each other. They don't know what to say... or do.

-------------------------------------------------

Kate was sitting next to Hen. She had a bag of chips and while she was eating, she was listening to Buck and Eddie's conversation. Buck was trying to get a nickname for Eddie.

"Okay, what about G.I? Like G.I. Joe. 'Hey, G.I.' You know that's a great nickname." Buck tried, but attempt failed.

"Yeah, souds like gastrointestinal." Hen says. Kate nodded and took a couple of chips from the bag.

Eddie chuckled and said "Yeah, I don't think so."

Bobby came upstairs.

"All right, everybody, listen up." He said. "I've got an annoucement to make. I just got off the phone with the people from the calendar, and they have made their choice."

"Well, no hard feelings, no matter who won." Buck said honestly. He then fist bumped Eddie.

"That's good, Buck, 'cause they didn't pick you." Bobby annouced.

Kate and Hen can't hide the laugh and they burst out laughing.

"Well, it's obvious a fix." Buck said. "No, congratulations anyway, G.I.!" Buck congratulated and clapped his hands.

"They didn't pick him, either." Bobby said. Kate raises an eyebrow.

"No? You?" Buck asks Bobby.

"No." Bobby said. Bobby turned his head to Chim who took a chip of Kate's bag. They all turned their heads to him. He was so confused. He turned around to see if someone else was behind them, but no. It was him!

"No way. You got to be kidding me." Chim said surprised.

"No. Congratulations, Chim! Or should I say Mr. April?" Bobby said.

"Congrats, Chim!" Kate said as she hugged him. Eddie and Buck clapped their hands and congratulated him as well.

"30 days of Chimney." Eddie said and gave him a high-five and so did Buck.

"I hope I'm not interrupting anything." A familiar voice came upstairs. It's Athena. Kate's smile grewsbrighter as she saw her. "Hey. I'm sorry." She said to Bobby who had walked towards her. But Bobby didn't say anything. Instead, Athena kissed him. ON THE LIPS.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa." Chim said. Hen and Kate look at each other with a playful smirk on their faces.

"What are you all looking at?" Bobby said as he turned around to see his team looking at them with surprised faces. "There's no more announcements."

Kate and Hen turned around and raise their hands.

"Pay up." They said at the same time.

"Wait a minute, wait a minute, you knew?" Bobby asked surpised.

"Sir, first you two were happy at the same time, then you were both pissed off at the same time." Hen explained.

"It wasn't hard to figure out." Kate said with a smile on her face.

"And, uh, you good with this?" Athena asked.

"Of course, 'Thena. As long as you're both happy." Kate said kindly.

"I'm just mad at myself for not fixing you up in the first place." Hen said and laughed.

They all go sit on the couch and chat.

----------------------------------------

Later that night, after their shift, Kate and Buck came into their apartment, laughing and talking about Chimney being Mr. April. They saw Maddie sitting on the couch, her bags packed.

"Leaving already?" Buck asked. Kate went to sit next to Maddie who had small tears on her eyes.

"Road ahead awaits." Maddie said.

"I'm more concerned with the road behind you." Kate said concerned.

"Maddie, what really happened with Doug? Why are you running away from him?" Buck asked concerned as well.

"No. I'm not gonna bring my siblings into this." Maddie said. Kate and Buck looked at each other with worried expressions on their faces.

They stayed silent for a moment.

"Maddie are you in some kind of danger?" Buck asked. Kate decided to put her hands above Maddie's.

Maddie waits a few seconds to answer.

"The stuff that Mom, Dad and Kate hated about him, that Buck picked up on even as a teenager, it all got worse. Much worse over the last year or so. And when I threatened to leave, he threatened to kill me." Maddie said. "And he meant it." Her voice cracked.

Kate instanly wrapped her arm around Maddie's shoulder. Kate freezes in her place though. All her thoughts about Doug were true. But killing Maddie? She never thought about that.

"But you broke free." Buck said. "And we're proud of you. But now is not the time to be alone, all right? So-so-so you... you should stay here."

"And if Doug comes looking, we know a lot of cops." Kate stated.

"He won't." Maddie said. "He doesn't know you guys live here. He doesn't know what you do. It's a real benefit to being married to somebody who doesn't ask you any questions." She wiped her tears.

"Okay, well, that's perfect." Buck said. "You can start over."

"We can help you. We can help you get a great nursing job at one of the hospitals." Kate said.

"No." Maddie said. "I really miss helping people, but I can't do that job every day, looking over my shoulder wondering who's walking in the front door."

"Okay, so you wanna help people, but not deal with them face-to-face." Kate said. She had an idea. She looked at Buck who had the same idea. "What about a 9-1-1 dispatcher?"
