Malfunction; Season 3 Ep. 8
The 118 got called to an ice rink where three ice skaters had been hurt. Kate, Eddie and Buck were tyring to find the figers that were cut from one of the skater's hand. Eddie and Kate chuckled as they saw Buck stumbling on the ice.
"Found two fingers, Cap. Still looking for the other ones." Buck informed.
"Hey, got the pinkie!"Eddie said, holding the finger high like it was a trophy. Kate chuckled a little.
"All right, three down. Two to go." Buck said as he decided to crawl insted of walking on the ice.
Couple of minutes later, Kate found the last one. "Haha, got the middle finger!" When she turned around, she saw Bobby kneeling down, pointing his flashlight to the ground.
"Hey, Cap, we found all the fingers." Buck said.
"Cap, victims are being transported." Hen said as she and Chim walked towards the team.
"Yeah. Our work here is done." Chim added.
"Great." Bobby said, still trying to find something. Kate and Eddie raised their eyebrows as they looked at each other, confused. "Ah. Found it."
"What's that?" Eddie asked.
"A sequin. When your blade runs across one of these, stops your skates dead in their tracks." Bobby informed.
"Wait, one sequin did all of this?" Buck asked.
"A wardrobe malfunction can be the most dangerous part of figure skating." Bobby said, like it was something simple.
"So how come you know so much about figure skating?" Chim asked.
Bobby sighed. "My partner Heidi Shatsky and I were Twin Cities Junior Pairs Champions three years running."
Kate widened her eyes.
So, you're telling me that my captain, Robert Nash, used to figure skate? My captain?
"I always thought you were a hockey player, Cap." Eddie said, nodding.
"Who says you can't do both?" Bobby said.
Kate titled her head with a confused expression as Bobby passed through the team, leaving them speechless.
"We'll Google for photos later." Buck said.
"Definitely." Kate added and they went back to the trucks.
----------------------------------------------------
"What's that?" Kate asked with her mouth full of food as Buck and Eddie appeared from the stairs with a big carton. Eddie walked to her side and gave her a kiss on the top of her head.
"This... this is epic." Buck answered. He pulled out a carton showing a figure skating Bobby when he was younger.
Kate almost spit the food she had on her mounth as Chim brust out laughing beside her. Once she swalloed the food, she couldn't help it but laugh with him and Eddie.
"Where did you get that?" She asked.
"I found Heidi Shatsky and she gave me a photo of him." Buck said with a playful smile.
"He's gonna love that." Chim said. They heard Bobby's voice. "Quick, hide it. He's coming!" Chimney said.
Buck hid it behind him. It wasn't such a great spot though, but Eddie covered the rest with his body.
They all got up from their seats as he spoke. "Morning folks. First up, water heater went out last night, but they are sending someone to fix it. Until then, you might wanna brace yourselves when you hit the showers." Bobby looked down at his notebook, giving Eddie the sign to take the carton out. "We're also changing the lunch schedule."
Then, Eddie started imitating fanfare noises as he took the figure out. Kate tried not to laugh as she saw Chim recording Bobby's confused face.
"Captain Robert Nash... this is your life!" Chim said.
"Pew. Pew. Pew." Buck cheered as he made movements with his hands around the figure.
"You like it?" Kate asked with a playful smile.
Bobby chuckled. "Oh, my gosh. Where did you get that?"
"Heidi says hi." Buck said. "She's gonna email you later. She didn't wanna ruin the surprise."
"I think we all had a little surprise this morning." Chim said. "Not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't that hair!"
"Yeah, Cap, what is this look? Is it some kind of Travolta thing?" Eddie asked.
"Not Travolta. Bowie." Bobby said.
"David?" Kate asked as he nodded. "Are you sure?"
"This feels a little more Siegfried and Roy." Chim said.
Hen appeared from behind. "Sorry I'm late. I had to take Denny to school. What did I miss?"She asked stunned as she saw Bobby's carton.
Bobby sighed, a smile still on his face. "Okay, for everyone who isn't fired, I will not be cooking today. We're having a special guest chef at lunch."
Their face dropped to a confused one. "Uh, no pasta Thursday?" Buck asked.
"Not today."
After a while, Athena arrived as the special guest. They were excited to taste her food as it would be amazing as always. While waiting for the lunch to be done, Hen and Kate were cleaning the ambulance.
"I don't know, he's been acting weird. I mean, first the sports bag, then he's late for dinner and I've seen the bruises, like, everywhere, while, you know, we're doing it. But that doesn't matter. What matters is that he hasn't been acting the same since last week." Kate said, looking at Hen who seemed distracted. "Hen?" She snapped her fingers in front of her friend's face. "Did you hear what I said?"
"Uh, yeah, Eddie's been acting weird."
Kate narrowed her eyes. "Is everything okay?"
"Yes, everything's fine." Hen said with a smile. Kate raised her eyebrow, not convinced at all. "Fine. Since our embryos got discarded, it's been hard on Karen and on me. I don't know what else to tell her... I mean, I've already said that everything was gonna be alright but what else am I supposed to say."
Kate sat down next to her and placed a gentle hand on her back. "Hey, you both are doing an amazing job and you know that. You shouldn't be so hard on yourselves, okay? I know you really want this but you're taking a break and that's fine. It's totally fine."
"Yeah, I know." Hen said, sniffing.
"So, why worry?" Kate gave her a reassure smile.
"Hey, girls. Lunch is ready!" Bobby said from upstairs.
"Coming, Cap. Let's go?"
Hen nodded and they headed upstairs. Kate sat between Eddie and Buck as Hen sat in front of Athena.
"I still think it's ridiculous you got suspended for solving a murder." Chim admitted what everyone thought about that situation. "But I might get over that if you keep bringing us food."
"Well, the brisket is my special recipe. You just smoke and slow for 14 hours. And then you turn it-" Athena started but stopped once she saw Buck picking up the salt.
Oh, no, don't do that Buckaroo.
Bobby shock his head as Buck looked at him, putting down the salt. Athena cleared her throat.
"She's been cooking at home too. Every meal's been a feast."
"I'd be pleased to get invited to come over to your house." Kate teased.
"You're always welcome." Athena teased back.
"Have you ever considered being suspended forever?" Eddie asked, jokingly. Athena and Kate chuckled, but Bobby looked at him seriously. "Not that your cooking isn't good, Cap."
"Well, I like both your food equally." Buck said.
"Ass-kisser." Kate said quietly but loud enough for Buck to hear her as he nudged her arm. She chuckled a little.
"Oh, I'm not liking it. I'm loving it." Hen said. "So when I go back for seconds, y'all better watch your fingers."
They laughed but got interrupted by Hen's phone ringing.
"Cheryl?" Hen asked on her phone. Kate looked at her as she got up from her seat and waked away. "No, I'm at work. I'm so sorry. I thought Karen was gonna call you."
Later that day, they got called to an emergency at the hospital. A car had driven into it. It was easy to deal with as there were no major injuries. Despite that, Hen got a call from Denny and it kept worrying her and Kate and Chimney.
----------------------------------------------------
The same night, Kate had dinner at Buck's with him, Maddie and Chimney.
"I really wish I could help her, but she's not talking to me about it. I'm not sure she's talking to anybody." Chim said as they talked about Hen.
You sure about that, Chim?
"There's definitely something going on with her. Eddie too." Kate said.
"Hey, you guys think it's the Santa Anas?" Buck asked. "I mean they make people act weird, right?"
Maddie and Kate laughed. "I definitely don't think it's the wind." The older sister said. "Wait, you know, maybe it's something personal she doesn't fell like sharing."
"Well, historically speaking, Hen and I tell each other everything. She's practically my best friend." Chim said. Kate cleared her throat. "Right, our best friend." Kate smiled proudly.
"Wait, everything?" Maddie asked. "Did you tell her about me?" Kate and Buck looked at her before looking at each other with confused expressions.
"No. I mean, I would have if I felt like she was listening." Chim said. "Maddie, I need to talk to someone."
"I know, it's just, you tell her, she tells Kate and Buck. I mean, maybe everything doesn't need to be shared with the 118." Maddie said.
"No way." Buck said. "If we didn't tell each other everything, what else would we do on a 24-hour shift?"
"Yeah. Okay." Maddie sighed as she turned around to face her siblings.
"Hey, don't have to." Chim said. Kate narrowed her eyes.
"It's fine." Maddie said. "Uh, I'm back in therapy. Uh, mandated by my boss this time."
"Wait, did something happen at work?" Kate asked.
"A woman filed a complaint against me. She said I was stalking her. I think stalking is an overstatement." Maddie admitted.
"But... it's true?" Buck asked, Maddie didn't answer.
"This woman called 9-1-1, and Maddie thought she was in trouble, so she just tried to help her." Chim said.
"Yeah, but she didn't want my help because she thinks I'm a crazy person who invaded her pivacy." Maddie added. "Maybe there's a lesson in there for the three of you."
Kate raised an eyebrow. She felt bad about her sister and she wanted to help, but didn't know how. Chim turned around to face the twins.
"So, what do you think's going on with Eddie?" He asked.
Kate sighed and walked to the table. "I don't know. I mean, he's been getting late for dinner. Me and Chris had to eat alone for three times now. He's also been appearing with bruises all over his body."
"All over his body?" Buck asked with a playful smile.
She pointed a threatning finger at him. "Hey, we do not talk about my sexual life, okay?" She sighed again and sat down in front of Maddie. "Anyways, I'm just worried."
"I bet it's nothing bad." Maddie tried to reassure.
"Yeah, me too."
After dinner, she picked Christopher up at Carla's house.
"Hey, kiddo!" She smiled and opened her arms to give him a big hug.
"Hi, Katie." Chris grinned at seeing her.
"How are you? Did you have fun at Carla's?" She asked, pulling away.
"Yeah! Lots of fun!" He smiled.
"Yeah? You'll tell me everything on the way home, okay?" He nodded with a smile still on his face. "Go get your stuff, all right?"
"Okay!"
Kate sighed a little once he left the hall.
"Girl, you look tired." Carla said.
Kate let out an amused breath. "That's because I am."
"Everything okay?" Carla asked.
"Yeah, yeah everything's fine." Kate smiled to disguise her tiredness and the fact that she didn't know where the hell Eddie has been lately.
"You sure? You look like you've been hit by a truck."
Kate chuckled. "I'm okay, Carla. Just tired, that's all."
Chris arrived with his bag. "Let's go, buddy?"
"Yeah, bye Carla!" Chris said before going to the car.
"Bye bye, Christopher." Carla smiled. "Try to get some rest, okay Katie?"
"Yeah, I will. See you tomorrow, Carla." Kate gave he a hug and walked to the car.
"Bye, girl."
Once in the car, she saw how happy Chris was.
"You look happy. You had a lot of fun there, didn't you?" Kate asked with a small smile.
"Yeah. We ate pizza, we watched Superman! We also painted dinossaurs!"
"What? You painted dinossaurs. Oh, my God, that is awsome!" Kate grinned.
"Yeah, Carla painted a T-rex and I painted a Brachiosaurus."
"Cool! I wish I was there to paint a T-rex too."
"Instead, you save lifes!" Chris grinned as Kate smiled warmly, her heart melting inside. "How was dinner with Buck, Maddie and Chimney?" Chris asked.
"It was good, thanks for asking." She smiled, looking at him through the mirror.
It didn't take much longer to get to the Diaz's house. Kate parked the car, but didn't see Eddie's. She narrowed her eyebrows.
"Hey, Eddie, we're home." She said when they got in. "Eddie, honey? Are you home?" She asked.
"Daddy's late again." Chris said sadly.
She kneed to his eye level. "I know, kiddo. Hey, why don't you get ready for bed and I'll call dad, how does that sound?" She smiled.
"Sounds good." Chris said, but it was obvious that he was still sad.
"Okay." She smiled.
He nodded, maybe a little happier. Maybe she shouldn't have put hope in him, Eddie might not come. Again. She waited for Eddie to pick the phone up. "Come on, pick up, pick up."
"Hey, this is Eddie. If it's not something urgent-"
"Yes, 'just text me, that's what messages are for'... Damn it, Eddie." She hung up and waited for Chris to get ready. A few minutes passed and she was hopeless, Eddie hadn't arrived and in no time, Chris would be ready.
"Katie, I'm ready!" She heard. She sighed.
"I'm coming." She walked to the bedroom. "All right, let me see those pearls." He smiled brightly. "Ooh, so shiny. How taught you to brush like that?"
"Daddy did." He said. "Is he home?"
She looked sadly at the kid. "He didn't pick the phone up. Look, I'll make sure that he gives you a goodnight kiss once he arrives, okay?"
Christopher smiled and layed down. "Okay."
She smiled a little and gave him a kiss in his forehead. "Good night, Chris."
"Good night, Katie."
"Love you, buddy. Sweet dreams."
"Love you too." He smiled.
She closed the door and leaned on the wall as she waited for Eddie to arrive. She looked at her watch. 11pm... It had been a while. She looked at her watch again as she waited anxiously. Something was off. And she was going to find it out. It was 11:42pm when she heard the keys on the front door. Eddie came in, his head facing the ground.
"Where have you been?" She asked, crossing her arms on her chest. He jumped back, scared.
"Jesus, you scared me to death." He said as he walked to her and kissed her cheek, walking to the kitchen.
"You still haven't answered my question." She turned around.
He looked at her. "Nowhere."
"Nowhere? Don't lie to me. I know where you've been. You were at Buck's, you had dinner with him." She lied, in attempt to know if he was lying too.
Eddie seemed relieved. "Yeah, how'd you know?"
"I called Buck a few moments before you left." She said.
"Yeah, we had dinner together." He simply said.
"You're wrong." She said, trying to hide her angry tone.
"What?" He asked, confused.
"You did not have dinner with Buck, because I did."
Eddie's mouth hung a little opened as he didn't know what to say. It was obvious that she knew something was going on.
"Uh, no, I was at Buck." He walked to the couch, sitting on it, trying to get out of the mess he had made.
What the... why would you lie?
She followed behind. "Quit the lying. I know something's going on!" She said.
"Nothing's going on, okay?" He said, taking a sip of his beer.
"No, it's not okay! You're lying! I know that you know that I know something's going on. I know that you've noticed me. I want you to tell me what it is!" She said angrily.
"There's nothing going on."
Knock it off, Diaz.
"I know those bruises don't appear because of your plays with Christopher, nor the latest emergencies we've had because we haven't been doing anything dangerous. And those bruises are recent, so tell me what the hell is going on."
He was left speechless. "Oh, so we're not gonna talk about your secret chronical condition?" He snapped and got up from his seat. He didn't have anyhting else to say.
"Oh, don't you dare changing the subject." She said as she followed him. "Why won't you tell me, Edmundo?"
"Why do you care so much?" He asked, even though he knew the answer.
"Why do I care so much? Maybe it's because I care about you, and I worry." She yelled, but not loud enough to wake Christopher up.
"Come on, Kate. I don't wanna fight now." Eddie said.
"Well, we don't have to if you just tell me!"
"I've been illegally street fighting!" He admitted, just realising what he had said once he said it. "There! Are you happy?"
Kate's mouth hung open as her eyes widened in shock. He's been street fighting? Illegally?
What the actual-
"You've been illegally street fighting?" She asked, shock still on her face.
"Yeah, you heard the first time, Kaitlyn. And I broke a man's nose."
"Why?"
"What?" He asked, confused.
"Why have you been doing that?" Tears were threatening to fall down her cheeks.
"Because I like it, okay? It's good. It makes me feel good, and better with myself. It lets it all go." He said, his eyes getting glossy too.
Did she do something wrong? Why would he want to be street fighting if he had her? Wasn't she enough?
"Why didn't you tell me?" She asked him.
"Because I knew you wouldn't like it."
"Well, I don't, but finding out this way isn't any better..." She said, a tear streamed down her face. The way he had been acting different, it all made sense now...
He sighed. "I never meant to keep going but I got addicted."
"Oh, my god." Kate let out a shaky breath. "Who drove you into this?" Her face got angrier. His face confused. "Come on, I know you wouldn't do this." She said.
"Lena." He admitted.
She scoffed. "Of course. Lena."
"Don't be like that, she's a good person."
"Oh, she's a good person?" She asked sarcastically.
"Yeah, she's great!"
"If she's such a good person, why don't you date her instead?!" She yelled, not thinking about what to say before she said it. Another tear streamed down her face. Both of them sighed.
"I... I think we need some time." Eddie said, tears on his own face.
"Yeah, I think so too." She looked at him. She could see his tears. She wiped her own, and got her stuff. "I promised Christopher you'd give him a good night kiss, so you better do so." She said getting out of the house and running to her car. Once in, she cried. She cried as loud as she could, beating the steering wheel. She could feel her throat burning when the cries calmed down.
Kate took a deep breath and started driving. She didn't know where to go, until an idea popped in her head. She parked her car at "Darney's Bar" her favourite bar in LA. She got inside and looked around. There were some drunk men staring at her but she didn't care. She would deal with them if she had to. She sat in front of the counter and asked for a shot. The bartender brought one a few seconds later and she chug it quickly.
She asked for another one. And another one. And another one. Four shots. She started to feel a little dizzy but asked for another one anyways.
"What's a pretty girl like you doing at a bar like this?" Her least favourite voice spoke from beside her. She didn't turn to him and drank the shot quickly.
"Great, this night can't get any worse." She saw a smile on Aaron's face.
"What are you doing here?" He asked, leaning on the counter.
"What are you doing here?" She asked back.
"Come on, I asked first." He smirked.
"And I asked second, and second is bigger." She said, the shots were already messing with her head.
He raised an eyebrow, confused. "Are you drunk?"
She scoffed. "No." She waved at the bartender to ask for another drink, however, she saw Aaron in the corner of her eye trying to deny her order. "I saw that. I want that drink."
Aaron sighed. "You're gonna get yourself a pretty bad hangover."
"I don't care."
"Well, you should."
"And why is that?" She asked, looking at him with a playful kind of angry smile.
"Maybe it's because you have an early shift tomorrow." He said.
"How do you know that? Are you stalking me or something?" She asked, surprised.
He paused. "Uh, I figured firefighters have early shifts."
She shrugged. "Fair enough."
The drink arrived. "Kaitlyn, wait." Aaron stopped her.
She rolled her eyes. "What?"
"You shouldn't."
"But I will."
"Fine, but let's go." Aaron said.
"What are you talking about?" She asked confused.
"I'm gonna take you home."
She let out an amused breath. "What?"
"Come on, who's gonna pick you up this late?"
"Nobody, I'll take my car and drive myself home."
"No, you're not. You're too drunk for that." He looked her up and down.
"Oh, please. I'm not going anywhere with you."
"Okay, you gotta at least get picked up by someone. Well, all your teammates are probably asleep and I'm pretty sure you're here because of your little boyfriend." Aaron accused.
"Shut up. You know nothing about us. I'll just call an Uber."
He raised an eyebrow. "An Uber. At almost 2am in the morning? Seriously?"
"Of course. There are hundreds outside at this time in LA."
"I'm not sure you live in the same LA as me." He said, in which she didn't answer. "Please, just let me take you home, okay?"
"Ugh, no, Aaron." She got up from her seat. "You just ruined my night more than it already was."
"Whe-where are you going?" He asked. She turned around.
"Where do you think I'm going? I'm going home. And I'm driving."
"Kaitlyn, you can't just-"
"Don't tell me what I can't do!" She yelled. Part of the bar went silent but she ignored. "Stay away from me. And from Eddie." She turned around to walk outside but her head started spinning.
"Are you okay?" She heard his voice through what she thought was a smirk.
"What did you put in my drink?" She fell to the ground, looking up at the man in a suit who once she had loved.
"I didn't want it to be this way." He said before her eyes shut.
----------------------------------------------------
Kate woke up abruptly. She looked around the room she was in. It was... her living room? How did she get there? She tried to remember the night before. She remembered the awful fight her and Eddie had. She remembered going to the bar. She remembered the drinks, Aaron. Falling. She also remembered falling.
Her phone rang and her head snapped towards the ringtone. 'Unknown number'.
What the hell?
"Hello?" She answered.
"Hi, princess." Aaron said.
She rolled her eyes. "How did you get my number?" She asked.
"Your dad gave it to me." She could hear the smirk on his lips.
"Of course he did..." She whipered. Her dad always loved Aaron. To him, he was the sweetest and most useful boy he had ever met.
"He says hi." Aaron said.
"Yeah, at least he call you." Kate said. "How do you know where I live?"
"That was also your dad."
"Right." Kate sighed. "Okay, Aaron. This is going to be very simple. Once I hang up, you're going to delete my number, okay?"
"Wha- Why would I do that?" Aaron asked.
"Because I'm asking you. If you don't, I swear to God-"
"You'll send your boyfriend to my house and he'll kick me like he kicked that man's nose?" Aaron said.
Kate narrowed her eyebrows. "How do you know that?"
"What?"
"How do you know that he broke a man's nose?" She asked him again, her anger boiling.
Aaron sighed. "I don't. Just- I'll delete your number, okay?"
"Aaron-" Was all she said before he hung up.
How the hell did he know that?
She ran her hands through her messy hair and sighed, trying to collect the missing puzzle pieces. That's when a notification sound was heard on her phone. Buck had texted her.
"Hey, you coming to work?"
She looked at the time. 9:03am.
"Shit!" She said as she ran to her room to wash her face and get ready.
----------------------------------------------------
She ran to the locker room to get changed. She saw Buck and Hen. Her headache was finally going away, thanks to the coffee, though, her eyes were puffy from the hangover and, of course, the crying.
"Morning." She said.
"Hey, we thought you weren't coming." Buck said with a smile.
"Yeah, well, I'm here." She laughed a little fakely.
Hen glanced at her when she went to sit on the bench, noticing her face. "Girl, are you okay?" Buck's head snapped to her in concern.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Why are you asking?" Kate smiled.
Hen raised an eyebrow. "Your eyes are puffy and your clothes? I don't think I've seen you wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt to work in ages."
"Everything's fine, okay? I just didn't get much sleep last night." Kate said, glancing at the entrance, catching Eddie's eyes, both looking at each other. It looked like time had stopped like the first time they met, but now, it was for a worse cause. She looked away, him doing the same.
"Oh, did something happen between you two?" Buck asked.
"Nothing, happened, okay? Just-" She said, looking back outisde the locker room and seeing Eddie and Lena talking. "What is Lena doing here?"
Hen and Buck looked at Eddie and Lena for a moment, looking back at Kate who was staring at the two outside.
"We don't know. I think she went to talk to Bobby about something." Buck said.
Kate knew what it was about. She didn't care though. If it was Bobby the one to stop him from fighting, then it should be. She looked down at her shoes and started lacing them.
The bells soon rang and the team was back to work. Kate did as much as she could to go with Hen and Chimney on the ambulance to avoid Eddie. She would talk to him, just not at work.
"Self-driving cars, smart homes, robot labor. I'm telling you, the future is here and it is terrifying." Chimney said halfway through.
Kate chuckled, but Hen didn't do a thing. Normally, she'd chuckle too but this time she didn't.
I guess there's something going on with some members of the 118.
"Hen!" Kate called out, snapping Hen out of her thoughts.
"I'm- I'm sorry Chim. I'm just- I'm just a little distracted." Hen said.
"Look, we know. And we're sorry. But we can't do this without you." Chim said.
"We need out partner back." Kate added.
Hen looked at the two. "I'm here. I'm with you."
"Good. Let's go put down this robot revolution." Chim said.
"Hey, not all automation is bad." Hen said, going for the button to turn the red light into green so the ambulance could pass.
"Nice!" Kate said.
"Robot number three just went crazy." Cara an employee of the place they were going, said to the team as she lead them to the man.
"What kind of robot are we talking about?" Bobby asked.
"Uh, transportation. The company has a whole army of them, and they're used for moving heavy boxes and shelved items around the warehouse."
"And it attacked someone?" Buck asked.
"Yeah, my coworked Jerome. Uh, I heard that it just beelined for him like a suicide bomber and crashed into the end of the aisle, the took down the whole shelf." Cara informed.
"I miss brick-and-mortar." Kate heard Eddie say from behind. Normally, she'd laugh a little but she didn't feel like it this time. Wonder why, right?
"Any idea of what caused the robot to malfunction?" Bobby asked.
"Uh, normally, their movements are really precise. It's just that number three was just gunning for Jerome."
Everyone did a great job at saving Jerome. His artery was ripped open but Hen was able to save him also when he crashed. It was Hen. She was back.
"Great job, guys." Bobby said.
"She is back!" Chim cheered.
Hen and Kate did their handshake as they cheered and laughed. Bobby watched with a smile as he spoke.
"All right, you three get him to the hospital. I'll see you back at the station."
"Copy that, Cap."
"Sure thing."
They went back inside, Chim staying in the back to stable Jerome. The girls in front.
"Hey, girls, Jerome is joking about wanting a catheter." Chim said. "I think he may have a head injury."
Hen pressed the sirens button.
Kate turned around to face Chim. "Tell him to hold on." When she turned back to face the front, a car was coming from the right side. "Hen!"
It was too late as the ambulance crashed onto the blue car. Hen stopped the engine and the girls were thrown back. They breathed heavily.
"Are you okay?" Kate asked. Hen nodded and rushed outisde and so did Kate after checking on Chim and Jerome.
"Ah, what happened?" He asked them.
"I crashed a car in the intersection. There's a girl in it." Hen said urgently.
"I'll car for more units." Chim said as he pressed his walkie-talkie. "We have to get Jerome to the hospital."
"Ma'am can you hear me?" Hen asked the driver. She didn't answer. Hen saw a coffee cup with the name 'Evelyn' written on it. "Evelyn. Evelyn! Can you hear me?"
"Chim, I need those units quick, we gotta open this car." Kate said.
"Ma'am, if you can't lift your head, can you move your fingers if you can hear me?" Hen asked.
"Kate, they're coming!" Chim said as Kate nodded.
"Evelyn!" Chim and Kate ran to Hen's side.
"Hen, let me get in there, let me try." Kate said, trying to do something to figure how to open the door.
"Evelyn, we're not gonna leave you, okay?" Hen kept saying. "Jerome?"
"Stable. Come on!" Chim said as he banged the window.
"Okay, we're just gonna have to break the glass."
"Break the glass. Hold on."
"Bring the jaws of life. Eddie, jump bag and extra medical gear." Bobby said. He held onto Hen. "Hen, I am taking this over you."
Bobby glanced at Kate so she would go with Hen.
"You can't work on her." Bobby insisted.
"No, Cap. No!"
"Hen, this is the procedure. We've got this." Bobby said as he and Kate lead Hen further away.
"I need to help her. Her name is Evelyn." Hen panted.
Bobby looked at Kate.
"Hen, hey. Hen, listen to me." Kate said, but her friend would just look at the scene. "Hen, listen, are you listening?" Hen nodded. "It's okay, they're gonna work on her and she's gonna be okay. She-She's gonna be okay. I promise." Kate tried to reassure. She regretted it though. It was a promise she didn't know if she could keep.
Both girls looked at the scene as the team took Evelyn out of the car. Kate put an arm around Hen's shoulders for comfort and her friend sobbed.
"Come on. Come on." Hen whipered desperatly.
"Hen, Hen." Athena appeared, Kate sighed in relief. The older woman looked at Kate before looking at Hen again.
"Athena. What-What are you doing here?" Hen asked.
"Bobby called me, okay?" Athena said. "How are you doing? Are you gonna be okay?"
"I-I don't know. The-The light. Is Evelyn okay?"
"They're working on her." Kate said.
"I-I slowed down. I thought I had the g-green, but then I saw her. And I know, but I couldn't-" Hen sobbed.
"Listen, you need to stop talking." Athena said, looking behind Kate. Kate had also noticed the two people behind her filming the scene.
"B-B-But I did this." Hen said.
"Shh, shh." Athena tried take her further away.
"I hit her!"
"Hen, calm down, okay? We love you, we love you, but you need to shut up. Okay?" Kate said.
"Listen to me, there's gonna be an investigation. And it starts now. Okay, LAFD, LAPD, they're gonna roll up on the scene with a lot of questinons. Now, listen, you need to think carefully about what you're going to say." Athena said calmly.
"But I want- I wanna tell them the truth." Hen said.
"Yes." Athena nodded. "But you only tell them what you know. Not what you think, not what you feel. All right, answer their questions but stick to the facts. You think you can do that? Henrietta."
"Hen!" Kate called out, but Hen was only staring intently at the scene.
Kate and Hen saw Eddie shocking his head and Kate already knew what was coming.
"No! Oh, oh! Aah!" Hen screamed and sobbed as she stumbled to the ground, both women holding onto her as she cried in their arms.
Kate and Athena tried to calm her down, but they knew it was impossible. Hen broke down in tears at the sight of the dead girl. Kate hated her screams but she would be there for Hen anyways.
Kate caught Eddie's eyes, whose eyes showed tears. Kate tried to fight back her own. Kate hugged Hen thigtly. Athena told Kate to go home as she would take care of Hen.
The way back to the station was quiet and tension heavy. They all got ready to go home, Kate being the fastest. Usually, she'd go with Eddie and he'd comfort her, but due to the circumstances, she chose to go home by herself. When she got in, it was just a matter of time as she broke down in tears. She broke her promise, and she broke Hen's heart. Not so deep down, she wanted Eddie. She needed him.

Hello everyone! I'm SOOOOO sorry I took SOOOOOOO long, but exams have been messing with my head. I'll try to write more chapters by the end of the week.
I hope you liked this one, though. It was intense and emotional in my opinion. Eddie and Kate had their first real fight. It's pissing me off and I don't know how to keep going, but I'll try.
Thank you soooooo much for reading, love you all! See you soon <33
