Fight or Flight/ Kate's beginnings Part. 1; Season 2, Ep.13
Kate brought her hand to her stomach. She pressed on it as hard as she could while crawling towards Maddie's phone. She grunt in pain. She was loosing a lot of blood. She eventually reached the phone.
"Siri... Call Buck." She weakly demanded the phone.
"Calling Buck."
After a few seconds, Buck answers. "Hey, Maddie. How's the date going?" She heard Buck from the other side of the phone.
"Buck..." She weakly said.
"K-Kate? Is-Is that you?" Buck asked in what she thought was confusion.
"He found her... Took her..." Kate said.
"What are you talking about? Are you okay? Kate? What's going on? Who took Maddie?" Buck asked millions of questions, some of them, she couldn't answer.
"Doug..." That was the only thing she could say as Buck would immediately understand.
"All right, Kate. I'm on my way." Buck said.
"Chim..."
"What? What happened to Chim?"
She didn't have time to answer.
"Kate? Kate!" Was the last thing she heard before she passed out.
---------------------------------------------------
"Mom, Dad, we're home!" Kate said as she and Buck came in.
"Hey!" Her mom, Margaret Buckley, greeted them soflty.
"Where's Maddie?" Buck asked his mom.
"She's in the living room." Margaret said. Kate saw as her twin made his way to the living room. "So, how was school?"
"It was good." Kate said with a small smile before starting to take her shoes off.
"Are you sure?" Margaret asked, now with a serious face.
"Mmh-mmh."
"Didn't get any test results?" Margaret asked.
Kate looked up and sighed. "Maybe...?"
Margaret sighed as well and put her hand up so Kate could hand her the test. "Which subject?"
"Science..." Kate said as she slowly took her test from her backpag and handed it to her mother.
"Let's see this disappointment..." Margaret said already looking down at the test. Kate didn't say anything though, she only looked down at her feet. Her mother would always say that when she had bad grades. "Another D? Seriously?"
"I'm-I'm sorry. The test wasn't easy." Kate defended herself still looking down.
"You always have to have some excuse, don't you? Look at me when I'm talking to you, young lady." Margaret raised her voice and Kate looked up. "It's rather 'the test wasn't easy' or... or 'I wasn't feeling well that morning' or 'All the other kids had bad grades too.' You can never say that it was your fault! That maybe you're not smart enough, or you didn't study enough. It's always other's fault, isn't it?" She yelled the last sentence.
"I-" Kate started saying but Buck and Maddie came in. Kate's eyes were getting glossy.
"Is everything okay?" Buck asked.
"Yes, darling, everything's fine." Margaret said and started going to the kitchen, Buck following close behind and Maddie staying in front of Kate.
"She yelled at me again." She said as a tear ran down her cheeck.
"I'm so sorry." Maddie said as she pulled her little sister in for a hug.
"I just wish I could have their love..." That was all she heard before she was abruptly awakened.
---------------------------------------------------
She slowly opened her eyes and saw a figure. It was Eddie.
"Hey, hey, it's okay. Paramedics are on their way." He said softly as he put his jacket around her stomach. She hissed in pain. Tears ran down her face.
"Maddie..."
Eddie's expression fell. "Don't worry, they're gonna find her."
"Doug..."
"I know, I know." He tried to calm her down.
"Chim..."
His expression fell once again. "He's... he's gonna be fine."
"This is all my-my fault..." Kate said weakly.
"No, no it wasn't." Eddie reassured her.
"I should've protected her... I should've known..." Kate sobbed.
"How could you know it was him? This is not your fault, do you understand?" Eddie said. He didn't get an answer. "Do you understand?"
She nodded slowly before a paramedic came in.
"All right, I got you okay? I got you, you just gotta stay with me, okay?"
"We got if from here, sir." The paramedic said. "How is it?"
"Stabbed on her stomach, she's lost a lot of blood. I-I did everything I could." Eddie said, still keeping his eyes on her.
The rest of the paramedics put Kate on a gurney. Eddie walked by her side. They left the house and Buck ran towards her.
"Kate!"
"Hey, Buckaroo." She said softly.
"You're gonna be fine, okay? You're gonna be fine." Buck reassured her.
"Maddie..."
"I know, they're gonna find her." He said.
"Promise?" She said, another tear streamed down her face.
"Promise." Buck said and she gets into the ambulance. Buck made his way to the detective who called him.
"Wait, can I go with her?" Eddie asked before the ambulance would take off.
"Are you a relative?" The paramedic asked.
Eddie though for a few seconds. Oh, he wished he was. "Humm, no I am not, but I work with her. She's my friend."
Maybe more than that. He thought to himself.
"I'm sorry, sir, but you need to be a relative, otherwise we can't let you come." The paramedic said as he walked away. The ambulance took off. Eddie just stood there, looking as it went away, before running to his truck and going to the hospital.
---------------------------------------------------
Maddie, Kate and Buck were tidying Buck's bedroom after the sleepover with his friends the night before.
"So, Kate, what was all that about mom?" Buck asked.
"What was what?" Kate said after shooting a glance at Maddie.
"I know it, Kate." Buck said looking at her with serious expression.
"You know what?" She asked him confused.
"Kate! Stop lying to me. I know your relationship with mom and dad."
Kate sighed. "There's is nothing to talk about."
"Yes, there is, okay? I hate when they yell at you. I hate when you try to defend yourself, but end up getting even more yelled at. I hate it, okay? And I can't stand it." Buck said.
"I'm already used to it." Kate said, looking down at some toys. She cared that Buck cared about her.
"Yeah, well, you shouldn't. It's not good. You're 14 now, you can fight back."
Kate scoffed. "It's not that easy, Evan." She said, now looking up at him.
"Yeah, it is! Come on!" He put his hands up in a fighing position. The girls looked at each other and started laughing.
"What?" Buck asked confused.
Both girls kept laughing.
"All right, fine! I'll talk to them." Kate said.
"Promise?" Buck asked.
"Promise."
---------------------------------------------------
Kate was once again awakened by doctors and nurses.
"This isn't going to hurt anymore." She heard a woman.
She hissed in pain though.
"It's okay..." She heard another woman.
"Maddie..."
---------------------------------------------------
March 2011.
"Hi." Kate heard a male voice behind her. She turned around on her seat of the bar to see a pretty good-looking guy.
He had pretty brown eyes and brown hair. He was taller than her, even though she was sat. He was smiling at her while she studied him.
"Hi." She said.
"What's a pretty lady like you doing at a bar like this?" He said with a smirk.
She chuckled a little. "Trying to escape life problems." She said before taking a sip of her drink.
"Welcome to the club." He said. "Aaron Jones. Pleasure." He said as he offered his hand for her to shake.
She happily shook his hand. "Kaitlyn Buckley."
"What kind of problems do you have?" Aaron asked. She looked at him, taking another sip of her drink. He caught her off guard. "Oh, sorry, maybe you don't wanna tell me."
She smiled a little. "Oh, screw that." She said as she took a giant sip of her drink. "Just, you know, family issues and stuff like that."
"Who doesn't have that these days?" Aaron joked, which made her laugh.
Maybe it was the alcohol speaking, but she was enjoying this. Maybe more that she should. She asked for another drink.
Aaron and her kept talking the whole night, it was like time had stopped. They had at least 8 drinks that night. But, it all had to come to an end. Time wouldn't stop for just them. It was one in the morning when she realized that she should go home.
"Maybe, I should go home. I had a lot of fun tonight. Thank you, Aaron." She said as she got up from her seat. He jumped off his seat as well.
"Wait, maybe I could get your number. You weren't the only one who had fun tonight." He said with a smirk.
Kate chuckled. "All right. Give me your hand." She said as she took a pen out of her bag and started writing her number on his hand.
She smiled before walking away.
She got home. Her father, Philip, was waiting for her inside. She opened the door and there he was with an unamused expression.
"Finally. Hey, Margaret, she's home." He said as her mom made her way towards them.
"Do you know how late it is?" She asked her.
"You think I don't? That's why I got out of the bar." Kate said, not even understanding what she had said. She can't be mean to her parents.
"You went to a bar?" Margaret asked in disblief.
"Yuh-uh." Kate said. Okay, this is totally the alcohol speaking... and it's worth it. She thought to herself.
"And you think that's a good behaviour?" Philip asked, clearly angry.
Kate scoffed. "Of course, it was my idea. If I didn't want to go, I wouldn't have."
"Why can't you just be like your sister?" Philip asked.
"Because I'm not her!" Kate yelled, now angry as well. Her head hurt. "I'm not Maddie, and I never will be. You know, since Buck and Maddie went on with their lives, you only had one responsability, and that was me. But you didn't care about that! I mean, you don't care about me! I'm happy that my siblings moved on from this life. From you. Maybe I should've gone along. Maybe I should've." Tears started forming in her eyes.
"And maybe you will." Philip said.
"What?" Kate asked, not believing that her father really wanted her to leave.
"Maybe you should go." Philip ended the discussion and went away to his bedroom.
"Mom...?"
Margaret only nodded and went away.
"Fine!" She yelled from the hall. "If that's really what you want, I'm going to pack my things and leave this stupid house."
She spent 30 minutes packing her things. She walked down the stairs, her parents were waiting for her. She stood in front of the door.
"Goodbye." Was all she said before leaving from that house.
---------------------------------------------------
It was 2:25 in the morning and Kate didn't have anywhere to go. Buck was already out of town, probably somewhere in Las Vegas by now, and Maddie was with her new husband, Doug. Kate never liked that guy, but she was happy for her sister anyway.
The only number she had that wasn't her relative's, was Aaron's. She called him.
"Hey." She greeted.
"Hey, it's 2:25 in the morning, you better have an explanation for waking me up." Aaron said from the other side of the phone.
She chuckled a little. "I bet you weren't even sleeping."
"All right, got me there." He said. "Is everything okay?"
"No."
---------------------------------------------------
Kate slowly opened her eyes. She looked around the room. Eddie was by her side. She was kind traumatized, not just for getting stabbed, but from her flashbacks.
"Hey, hey. Are you okay?" He asked concerned.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Is Maddie-" She started but Eddie cut her off.
"They found her." He smiled.
"They did? Oh, my god! That's amazing." She said
"They brought her in this morning. She killed Doug."
She got surprised. "Really? Wow. Well, that's my sister." She said but she realizes. "What about Chim?"
"He's awake too."
"Oh, that's great." She grinned. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. A little bit traumatized, but, apart from that, I'm fine, now that I know you're safe."
I'm safe with you. She thought to herself.
She smiled and saw her team come in. Chim came in on a wheelchair. Chris also made his way next to Eddie.
"Hey, Katie." Chris said.
"Hey, buddy. How are you?"
"How are you?" That was Buck who asked.
"I'm doing just fine." She said. She turned her head to look at Chim. "You really do like hospitals, don't you, rebar head?"
They all laughed, even Chim who didn't like people to call him that. "I really do." He joked.
They spent a few more minutes together until Kate decided to visit Maddie. Kate also went on a wheelchair.
"Hey, Mads." She said before coming in.
"Hi, Kate."
"How are you feeling?" She asked.
"Better now, knowing that he'll never bother me again."
Kate smiled soflty. "Yeah."
"Look, I'm so sorry. I never meant for this to happen. I-" Maddie started with tears in her eyes but Kate cut her off.
"Hey, this was none of your fault, okay? How could you possibly know? Don't blame yourself the way I blame me." Kate said but before her sister could ask why she blamed herself, she spoke up again. She put her hand above Maddie's. "By the way, I want you to know that I'm so proud of you. I'm so so proud of you for being brave and never giving up because that's who you are. Because that's what you thaught me." Kate reassured.
Maddie nods with a happy smile and happy tears.
"I love you, sis." Kate said with a smile.
"I love you too." Maddie said with a grin.
They stayed silent, just enjoying each others company.
